The Tarim Basin Mummies by Victor Mair

The exhibition Secrets of the Silk Road explores the history of the vast desert landscape of the Tarim Basin, located in Western China, and the mystery of the peoples who lived there. Located at the crossroads between East and West, oasis towns within the Tarim Basin were key way stations for anyone traveling on the legendary Silk Road. Extraordinarily well-preserved human remains found at these sites reveal ancient people of unknown descent. Caucasian in appearance, these mummies challenge long-held beliefs about the history of the area, and early human migration. The material excavated suggests the area was active for thousands of years, with diverse languages, lifestyles, religions, and cultures present. This exhibit provides a chance to investigate this captivating material to begin to uncover some of the secrets of the Silk Road. Dr Victor H. Thank you. I also identify with them. I have Scots on my paternal paternal side, and Irish Celt on my maternal maternal side. The Tarim Basin was part of huge ancient Sumaria. One of the tartans found is the exact same as one from my Scottish paternal line, except for a thin yellow line which might have fades in the ancient sample. My aunt traced my grandfather's side back to a Pictish area, the most ancient people there. Because of his build and colouring, red hair, blue eyes, longer than average male limbs, square jawed, it is thought he might well have come largely from the 'Picts' who as historians are at last realising did not disappear and weren't all killed off. They simply moved around, intermarried with other than tribes (which was usual as they knew about inbreeding by then) and became referred to by other names. Due to their pottery being so much older than that of the Han but similar, it is thought they taught the Han. When they were first dated, 'Loulan' was DNA dated at around 6 thousand years old and the man at around 4 thousand years. When it was shown they weren't Han, the CCP halted digs, covered maybe thousands more remains and planted trees on them which are kept irrigated. I have heard they are among the most covertly racist (against all non Han and particularly the Uyghars and all other races from other countries). If so, that is some racial hatred, to do that and irrigate trees in the desert under the pretence of greening (as per pyramids in what is now China) and keeping them watered in the knowledge that the roots will destroy evidence of any other peoples there.

Hello again, Ang, in reading on in your comments I assume we are sort of cousins, we share colors, though I am from the branch that returned to the Baltic area with the most of the Tuatye. I am of the Ru tribe, and famously, we have no borders, been there...done that, even long before the age of viking. I will assume you know exactly what I am talking about. We are an endlessly curious folk, and where others may say in disdain ' Eeew! We don't do do that that way!', we tend to say 'We don't do it that way, but tell me, how do you do it?'. The written records of our Shang neighbors In the Altai called us the 'T(z)uk Ru ( Ru tribe) in their writing and also is mentioned the Boii tribe as the Botai (of a Boii mother, hinting haplography was recognized even then, without the aid of IBM or Apple, the ancients blow me away with their natural knowledge, stemming from accune observation!). @@johnruge1218 I didn't know but thank you for giving me something further to research and look into. I am not an academic. I am an elderly lady in England who began reading about deep history a few years ago. It begun because I disbelieved the out of Africa theory, so bought a wall map of the world and traced my own ancient tribes, probably Picts, definitely Hampshire settled Belgae and Celt and one or two others back over known and most likely migrations. An eye opener, all the way back to huge ancient Sumaria. No idea where before that. Took on some ancient scripts and languages here and there but not enough to make me an expert. That said, I can say I am reasonably expert on what I personally have studied and cross referenced although I am always ready to relearn when new knowledge arises. Best wishes, cousin.

There is absolutely nothing about them that is remotely related to Europeans, except some absurd theories that have already been proven wrong via DNA evidence. Archaeology is a liberal arts major, not a scientific profession. They should stop assuming based on cultural biases & start accepting the data actual scientists provide.

The thing that has fascinated me the most regarding this subject is that under the lenses of Scientific Linguistic Tocharian was an Indo-European language of the Kentum branch, like the ones of the Celto-Italic branch, while all the other ones present in those lands were Iranian or Indo-Iranian (both the exctict ones and the alive ones: like Tajik nowadays) which are clearly belonging to the Satem branch. The problem starts from Scientific Linguistics (both from the phylogenetic and the geo-social perspective), and it arises from the fact that it was a Kentum one, but from here it goes far beyond the study of language. A complete and complex 360° explanation can come onlu from a study that should be conducted by a multidisciplinary approach of sciences such as Archaeology, Social-Anthropology, and Population's Genetics (also keeping in mind also the Scientific Linguistics' data indeed).

Thank you. Appreciated. Some things which make sense which I didn't know there. However, Israel as a country didn't exist then. It didn't until 1947 very recently in fact. It was Canaan/Kanaan which was a territory of Egypt. He had told the Proto 'Jews' to go and live in Canaan (they didn't live in the desert for 40 years. They travelled through it is all). After their numbers naturally grew they committed genocide upon the Canaanites. The story is that they did so because of the cruel pagan re-legion of the people who were already there, but in fact the Hyksos who were the earlier proto Jews were also pagan and worshipped a number of cruel gods including some the Canaanites worshipped. They were genetically the same people but had become different tribes as families had dispersed and taken over other territories. They were cousins. Familial murder and genocide wasn't unusual then, nor has ever been including in European royal bloodlines, which you know but I write for those who don't. We know that even now there are brother and cousin wars. Russians and Ukrainians are the same peoples. History repeats itself because the nature of man stays the same. Pity.

Tocharian as a centum language probably arrived when the Afanesievo culture arrived in the Tarim Basin. Most likely dominated by R1b* y-DNA carriers whereas the mummies are from a later arrival of R1a* y-DNA carriers. The centum languages are mostly dominated by R1b* in Western Europe.

Tocharian people precede Persia (Iran) or Turkey by thousands of years (Turkic is not even sport a Indo-European language, Common Turkic is in a separate linguistic family ... Mongolian is a Turkic language and the language in Turkey came from there - the Turkic homelands - as had much of it's peoples DNA. Why is the speaker so nervous? If you notice he was the original guy from the earliest videos via NOVA in the late1990s and sadly, he brought unwanted attention to this site and was a big cause of the looting. As we known, these alphabets emerged around 2500 years ago, which is much later than the Tarim Basin Mummy! The Tocharian scripts later found in Tarim Basin is only 1400 years old. They are much much younger than the age of these Mummies found in Tarim Basin (at least 1500 younger! ). To say these mummies are Tocharians, just like Amerian Indians are white europeans!
