With more modern gumsticks they could have made the battery compartment even smaller :), that is one chunky rechargeable!

Yes, or it could be a lithium ion battery like the Sony LIP-8M model, the Sony MZ-R50 MiniDisc battery, and with longer battery life... but Sanyo's pride wouldn't accept borrowing technology from Sony.
