Thanks for covering this Captain Andy, otherwise I would likely not have heard of it. Tragic!

Sympathies from the entire Minorcan Navy. For many who see this from other places, they might not understand what being a part of a community living on a barrier island is like.

Sorry to hear that my wife and I camped out there about twenty five years ago. It was a beautiful place.
@JoeLinux2000Ай бұрын
Probably too much weight for the gangway and it buckled or perhaps one structural member failed, causing the truss to fold. Sometimes something as small as a single missing bolt can cause a failure like this. It is a tragedy for sure.
@Winstonrodney6989Ай бұрын
If there were fifty people at the average American weight then you are talking around 6 tons of pressure. I am going to guess that this aluminum gangway is not rated for that kind of weight.
@Winstonrodney6989Ай бұрын
Basically it would be like parking two ford F-150 trucks on it.
@fredgervinm.p.3315Ай бұрын
I'm thinking twenty went in, 20ppl at 250lbs ea, that's 2.5 short tons on a ramp secured with 3/8 bolts. Something is gonna give...

My Catamaran is docked just over at Dallas Bluff Marina 1 1/2 miles away and the tide rips thru the marsh in this area and on top of it all it was made worse due to the king tide at the time so it was extra made extra treacherous. At the time they went in the water it would have been on 2/3rd to 3/4 of the way in incoming high tide. I’m an excellent swimmer and even with good divers fins on you can’t fight it on an average day. On another note that gangway was way too long and unsupported for the quantity of people allowed to congregate on it at one time causing it to buckle. The only supporting mechanism of that gang way was the handrail triangular configuration but unfortunately the handrail material wasn’t sufficient to support the weight of the gangway and large amount of human traffic.
@gordondalrymple7644Ай бұрын
Was it because of the tide, couldn’t swim , or injuries in the collapse ? Hope they have recovered everyone , prayers for you guys
@MinorcanMulletАй бұрын
All of the above. Some still unaccounted for
@Ratboy2004Ай бұрын
It's something only to understand if experienced. One hits the water quickly unexpectedly and as humans, we tend to gasp. "Wtf, omg!" Etc. When we hit water, we breathe in accidentally. Someone who is older or inexperienced swimmer with a lung half full of water, especially fast moving water, nothing to grab on to, heavy clothing. 😮😮😮 very tragic.

Im always surprized when LOTS of people crowd up on an unsupported structure.That said the people in charge of loading the ferry SHOULD have known how many was too many.Another tragedy that did not have to happen.IMO

A sad reminder that one can be going about a normal happy day, and then its over. If the dock & ramp is new maybe this was the first time it was "tested" by an extreme tide. If there wasn't enough overlap into the dock....
@arleenmorlino4019Ай бұрын
I will never understand why they build a dock that can support a certain amount of people at a time…clearly the size of that dock was overloaded. Such a tragedy that was easily prevented…
@MinorcanMulletАй бұрын
Wondering if design engineers factored in the possibility of so many on the system at once. Normally that many would not have been on the ramp/gangway and adding such a dynamic load.
@zanastephens9144Ай бұрын
God be with everyone involved 😢
@danlowe8684Ай бұрын
Looking at the images, it appears the whole end dock is gone (supports, etc.). In a collapse, you would expect to see some parts still remaining. This seems more like the result of a collision.

I believe the floating portion of the dock is just outside the frame of that picture

Water makes wood Rot
@MinorcanMulletАй бұрын
This construction was mostly concrete and aluminum and any wood on the floating dock would be treated. Keep in mind this system was rather new. Opened in late 2021

I think they should have let the elephant swim across. Elephants love to swim, and making it walk across that narrow gangway was an unnecessary cruelty.
