i've only recently discovered your channel. i lived in Sapporo as an exchange student back in 1982 and my last trip back before i changed work from japanese tourist industry in Australia to what i still do today - intellectual property (patents, designs, trademarks) was in the late 90's... whilst above ground still looks eerily similar below ground has grown out of this world! underground never stretched that far back then, and naturally the shops are all different now, very modern, nothing from my days at all - as you'd expect after all these years. still, brought back so many wonderful memories for me - so thank you

Massive is an understatement to describe that underground tunnel walk. I walked the whole length of it, from Sapporo station to a block after Odori Park, near the big department store (not sure if Parco), which is sadly, not there anymore. We discovered it accidentally, while walking Sapporo station and saw signs that we can walk the city underground, without braving the cold winter night. Missed Sapporo, wish I can come back.

All of this looks so familiar from our trip in October 2019! We had amazing zangi, soup curry, and jingisukan all in the Sapporo underground. For walking in snow and slippery conditions, think of walking like a penguin: take small steps and keep your center of balance over your feet (not leaning forward or backward.) Some people also like to use YakTrax, which are extra grippy attachments that you can put over any shoes.

I enjoyed this video a lot, as we traveled to Sapporo in May 2019. We actually stayed at the Sapporo Grand Hotel. It was very nice and affordable too, about $150/night. They had a great breakfast buffet that we ate at every morning. There's an underground entrance near the Starbucks IIRC, so you don't have to go outside to get to the rail station. We also walked past the Clock Tower and the entire length of Odori Park. There are attractions in Sapporo we went to, like the Hokkaido Jingu and Maruyama Zoo, which are located within Maruyama Park. We were lucky and even saw cherry blossoms there. Also, I notice you say "You Know What" instead of pandemic or Covid. I know these past couple of years have been really hard on everyone, but I think it's okay to say pandemic and/or Covid. It's part of our present and will also be a part of our history.

The underground city in/around Sapporo station looks huge and it makes me feel that the Sapporo citizens can be survived in a nuclear war because they can evacuate to such a big underground shelter in such cases and could be protected.

Shinichi, thanks for another nice video!! For your next wintertime trip to Sapporo, check out "Crampons" on the internet. They are metal or rubber chains/spikes that for over your shoes. They are suppose to help prevent slipping on ice. Please take care!

Thanks for the walk about Shinichi. It was so cute when you said you were lost while standing right next to a map. 😆 That was adorable. I would be scared also to walk on the ice but I love the crunching sound of snow under feet. I'm glad you didn't slip and fall. Take care and stay safe.😊

Hi Shinichi, I’ve really enjoyed your Hokkaido series, so much so that I’ve watched the whole set twice. Hakodate was my absolute favourite place that you and Satoshi visited overall during your trip. I really appreciate you filming and sharing this experience especially in the cold weather. I think one positive to come out of the last couple of years that you also mentioned was that it’s made us look more at our countries for travel. It’s certainly made me realise how many interesting places there are to explore on our own doorstep. Thank you for your continued excellent content, I look forward to seeing where you will go next. Best wishes to you and Satoshi from England

I loved this city when I visited in May about 10 years ago. Windy place. Reminded me a bit of Chicago. The clock tower was built in Boston, MA, my hometown. My partner in life at the time was from Tokyo. We relocated him, officially, to Chitose…sister city to Anchorage, AK where we were living. And his college tuition decreased by 75% in cost. I loved the landmarks you visited…we saw them all as well. I was introduced to Nana’s Green tea in the underground mall. One of my nicest experiences which I have relived in Waikiki. If you go back again be sure to check out the botanical gardens and the Ainu center. This was the place where I realized Alaska natives and Ainu people are cousins.

Very nice video. Sapporo has a distinct charm that I love. It is not as modern as tokyo and not as conservative as kyoto. I was there during autumn so the city was bursting with yellow and orange trees. I hope I can go back soon one winter season when the world is already at peace. I pray and I claim.

Was there Winter 2018, and just like you, I fell, 2 times. I got confident that all snow are the same. It is not. The soft ones are easy to walk on but sinking. The frozen hard one are treacherous, they are slippery. I got my lessons fast, on the same night we came to Sapporo, on the Nakajima-koen subway exit. Got careful after two 2 shameful experiences, hahaha!

It's funny that IOC chose Sapporo as a place for the marathon competition for 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympic because I suppose that they probably thought the temperature of Sapporo in summer would not go up to so high as Tokyo, but unfortunately the temperature was around 34 deg C in Sapporo when the marathon was held. It was almost the same temperature as Tokyo, beyond their expectation.

Sweet Shinichi, get some detachable spikes for your shoes/boots. It makes a huge difference in slippery/icy/snowy conditions and you won’t have to worry about falling and getting hurt. Cheap and lasts many seasons.

Some said you should lean your upper body a bit forward when walking in thick snow/ice like that, so you are less likely to fall on your butt if that happens, and if you fall forward, you can use your hand/arm to break the fall…anyway, nice video!

Snow monkeys can not be seen in Sapporo and Hokkaido. You could see the snow monkeys soaking in the hot springs which is located close to the monkeys living area of the mountains(850m above ground) in the northern part of Nagano Pref.

Hasn’t changed much. Even before covid, Japanese people wore masks during flu season, bay fever season, or when they generally didn’t feel good. It’s mostly to make others feel less uncomfortable around them.
