Sir Elton John: "I was so blown away by the version of Yellow Brick Road. I've never heard anyone sing one of my songs like that ever. I can't thank you enough, giving your time and blowing my mind with that version. Because when someone sings your songs they usually copy you and she made it her own. @DanielChannel892 жыл бұрын
Because we no longer live in the era of the songwriter, we live in the era of the hitmaker. You can be both, but only the latter is necessary for maximum profit. Watch American Idol - much as I have enjoyed that as a talent show, it is solid proof that the most talented and/or most original do not usually win America's votes. Instead, the most votes go to the biggest crowdpleaser, even if it's just pleasing by way of lowest common denominator. Guy with guitar sings somewhat catchy, easily singable songs, has vaguely likable personality, gets the most votes. Depending on the audience you are trying to appeal to, there are different lowest common denominators, but songcraft, lyricism, and even extreme talent are not premium needs for modern success. I don't think older generations were necessarily better or smarter. I suspect they would have fallen for mass-produced stuff just as much (and in some cases, we can see that they did). It wasn't the dominant form of the entire music industry back then, but I think that's just because record companies took a while to figure out the formula.

Found this video again. Every once in a while, if we're lucky enough, we get to see an artist cover a classic without ruining it and compromising it's original integrity. And then, even more rarely, we get to see this - an artist who not only fully respects the original composition, but takes it to a completely new place and an even higher level. This version walks that fine line between originality of it's own, while paying homage to Elton John, and at the same time magically creates something so brilliant and powerful. Sara has pulled this off in a stellar way, much like Johnny Cash did with the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". Simply spellbinding and moving.....

I've loved Sara for many, many years! Quite a while ago, I accidently read a tweet where two of her friends or fans (not sure which) were talking about her and they talked about how much she swears (especially the 'F' word!); They were totally okay with it and thought it was funny - which it can be, because I use it often when I speak with my sister...lol. Although, that just in private, and apparently Sara says it in public, like on stage sometimes. My daughter is in her early 40's, runs her own company, and says the 'F' word in front of clients and when writing - I just find it so unprofessional! Having been blown away by the Angelina Jordan version, I now understand that some of her best riffs are apparently from Sara. Wherever you are, Sara, I want you to have due credit and hope that your magnanimity is equal to your musical talent.

@@madgoku99 Not only that, there is a warmth in Angelina's voice that is pretty remarkable for one so young. Sara's cover of Elton John's song is amazing. Ya wonder if someone could top that but along comes Angelina and upsets the apple cart. I love the arrangement, by the way.

Insanely talented singer and writer. I'll admit, when I first heard "love song" on the radio years ago I thought Sara was just another mainstream female pop/indie singer. What I later found was that I had completely misjudged the depth of that song in particular, and then came to search for more of her music and realized what natural skill and creativity she fosters. I've heard "Yellow Brick Road" by Elton growing up my whole life - but it wasn't until I came across this rendition a few months ago that I was able to finally feel and understand the meaning and value of this song. Not only does she hit every note with precision, she simultaneously creates a very fluid and free sound that would seem to contrast but does not. :)
