My parents grew up dirt poor in the depression and nothing was thrown away. Find a small piece of broken plastic on the floor? Put in the drawer because we might find out what it goes to later and can glue it back on. Every bread bag twist tie and roll rubber band from a newspaper or stalk of broccoli STILL goes in the drawer even though they’re 90 and probably have a net worth of over a million dollars. But I guess how that’s people who had $140 between them on their wedding day have a million in assets today. I’m frugal but there’s a limit and saving everything because it might be useful for something one day is a burden. Surrounded by useless junk is bad for mental health too.

The main thing I splurge on is food. But I eat emotionally. If I'm stressed, I eat a snack. If I'm sad, I'll grab some chocolate. If I'm angry or depressed, I'll binge eat a bit. So in 2025, I'm trying to develop a better relationship with food, and not use it to "self medicate" so much. I "treat" myself with unhealthy snacks way too much, instead of working on the issues that trigger this kind of eating. Fast food, snacks, etc, all add up every month, as far as wasting money. I'm pretty good with my finances in general, but I gotta stop wasting money on food items that add no true nutritional value to my health. I've been a sugar addict all my life, and sugar feeds all kinds of cancers, especially in women.

@@debbiesparks471 I buy kudzu capsules. At the first sign of withdrawl symptoms, I take 1 or 2 capsules (depending how severe symptoms are.) I set a timer for 15 mins and reassess. Things are usually fine by then. If not, I check again in 15 more mins. If still an issue, I take 1 more cap. I've never taken more than this. After a day or 2 of doing this, the withdrawls are done. I've done this when eliminating sugar and alcohol (at seperate times) and friends and coworkers also tried with great results. Especially good after sugar-holidays...Halloween, Christmas, etc. A tincture would likely work, too, but I've not tried that yet.

Rather than souveniers, we bring back Christmas tree ornaments from each place. I love decorating my Christmas tree, and each year it's fun to bring out the ornaments --- it's like seeing old friends again. And as we decorate the tree, we remember the places where we've had those great memories. And when the kids were younger and felt the "had" to bring home a souvenier, they each knew hey could search for a Christas ornament, which sort of turns the shpping into a treasure hunt of sorts. And most museum gift shops sell amazing ornaments.

We have cut out so many things , but I love Christmas and I already broke my no spend January for impulse buying by buying these cute Christmas ornaments that were seventy five percent off. I did spend less than six dollars. I am done with fast fashion and purses. I have more than I need. We go to estate sales and on the last day things are fifty to seventy five percent off. We buy as many necessities there as possible, we buy clothes made in US ..usually two dollars an item. We buy light bulbs, even gifts , etc. Last month I got a new pair of real suede boots for $2.50. So, yes we can do this. ❤❤❤

I have several designer purses for 20 yrs. I bought them when I was younger. Because they were such good quality they have lasted all these years so they were a good investment. I don’t buy trendy clothes but classic ones that will last years if properly taken care of. I don’t buy coffee on the outside. I take a 40 oz Stanley that stays hot for 6 hrs. The cup paid for itself already. I buy plastic bags and find them more economical than using silicone ones. I never buy cereal either except for oatmeal. Too many calories and it leaves you hungry an hr later. I cook mostly everything from scratch, just not breads. Mine don’t come out that well. I shop my supermarket and eat what’s on sale that week. I never go to the movies. Too expensive. I do pay for an Amazon membership because I feel I save shopping online and not going into stores and impulse buying. I do go over the top for Christmas and birthdays. I also do experiences with the grandkids. I want them to remember me fondly when I go. I live about an hour or so from an Amish supermarket. There are parking spots for the horse and buggies! My mother and I take a trip once a year and get herbs and spices in containers that they have purchased in large amounts. The prices are so cheap! The other thing they have that they split up in small amounts are dry goods. Sometimes you need a specialty product but don’t want to buy a large amount. It’s also a discount store so we pick up things that have been reduced because of a packaging change. But only things we use. The area is the closest Target so I tend to stop in there to pick up some things I need. (Do you know how much money I save living that far from a Target?) And then we eat at a restaurant that is local to that area. It’s a nice outing with my mom and we actually save a lot of money.

I don’t mind a text myself (I live in a very different time zone than most of my family, so a phone call isn’t always possible), but a Happy Birthday over Facebook is actively annoying to me. Part of it is that I only use Facebook out of necessity, but it also feels performative, like they only said something because other people would see it. thrift stores are the best to buy cheap purses and such, if you're into this. Just wash them well before use though

12:19 I redeemed a free movie ticket from an app, and did the same thing (but "splurged" on a coffee to go and a snack from a mini market).

@margaretderen20827 күн бұрын
Well, I’m happy to write that none of these apply to me…like I haven’t used a purse in over 30 years…no scented “anything” in my house…etc.

I never buy clothes that you have to iron , let alone dry clean . I try to make anything and everything from scratch as possible , I have made bees wax wraps , haven’t owned plastic wrap for at least 4-5 years , same as paper towel .
@ladywytch12918 күн бұрын
I haven't used plastic wrap in years, either. I want to try the beeswax wraps...how long do they last? I use paper towels because I have animals and...paper towels are sometimes better, lol. But I have a huge pile of cleaning rags. Our thrift store gives away bags of clothes that they can't sell. I grab a few and use those, plus I get enough extras to play with my crafts, lol

Well apparently I'm frugal since i never got these things anyway nothing bugs me more than overpriced crap like bags that have a name on them, common sense prevails

Only in America is healthcare such a problem. Living in UK means medical care is free and we pay a small amount for medication, nowhere near its actual price. We can have medical care that is private and we pay for but that is a choice. We are lucky.

Elphaba!💚💚💚💚💚💚 I think the only thing in your 2025 list that I haven't also given up on is the ziplock freezer bags for pound-portioned meat that was bought in bulk and preserving low glycemic fruits out of season. I've stopped using the non-freezer bags and have been using the same roll of cling wrap for 5 years I use it so infrequently (usually only needed to stop skin formation on a homemade starch- and sugar-free pudding/custard).

I use a vacuum sealer for my meats, etc.
@lorim.413610 күн бұрын
@@Bloodhoundjed1 Even better on the preservation side after the initial expense but then I cannot reuse them as mini wet food garbage bags. That 2nd use really cuts down the smell and the fruit flies!

Shouldn’t you just say “No thanks” I find adding the “I dont drink alcohol” unnecessary. You don’t have to explain yourself. It comes off sounding superior.

of course not, we buy groceries so there is nothing left for trinkets, clothes, tooth paste, shampoo, but in thirty years we pay for the nursing home

So where’s your list for those of us who already don’t do any of these? My only exception is with my grandchildren. But even there, I am a thrift store shopper. Several of their holiday gifts are brand new or nearly new thrifted items.

Im so sick of my kids wanting this cereal and that cereal when they still havent finshed whats in the cupboard in the first place and they asked for them
@lisakleyer-uz2vy18 күн бұрын
When my kids were young they only got to pick cereals that were on sale, and then the rule was only two boxes open at a time. They had to finish one before another one got opened. Good luck mom.

I had two rules for my boys…. They could choose any cereal they had coupons for and could NOT open a box until the first one was finished. When cold cereal was finished… oatmeal!

Use a credit union. We haven't paid bank fees in 25 years. In the US, credit unions are all around, and joining is not as hard as you may think. Worth calling ones around you, if there are any.
