My son purchased a huge piece of ham. I reminded him to bring me the bone and fat. I make bone broth, and with ham, I use it for pea soup and home baked beans.

Agree 100% she should sell her house. She will have $$ to help pay that credit card down or off and the car. The car payment should be the first thing to pay off after selling her home. Homes come with repairs some are very expensive. I bought a mobile home here in WV. It was the cheapest alternative to renting. I looked for the best/safest mobile home community to live in and I pay $859 a month including lot rent. All apartments here start at $1,200 including subsidy housing. Its insane. So this was my best alternative and glad I did. The divorce gave me $60k and $30k is in a CD earning money for me for my future. I have a part time hustle and am raising my granddaughter to boot. It's not easy but doable. Divorce is hard but once you start becoming self reliant and see where you started and now where you've come from, its time to be proud of yourself. Julie, praying for you sister!

I don't agree with going to cash only establishments. Cash only enables tax avoidance and when taxes are not paid, all communities suffer.

Great video! I feel like many of the things you covered are things I’ve been doing for years. Since the pandemic, I have been doing pickup for my groceries. I load what I need on the app and show up to pick it up without the hassle. This works especially well during the summer as I live in an east coast summer beach town. It also helps me focus on the products that I like. And when things are on sale, I stock up. This includes meat. I am very specific about cuts of beef and the chicken I buy. I will go into the store for that and tend to stock up on those items when on sale. I have 2 freezers to keep things in. I also cook many meals at a time to freeze for ease. If I’m making a lasagna (they are small since it’s two of us) I make 5 and freeze 4. Same with soups, stews casseroles, etc. Another tip is to become friendly with people at your farm stands during the summer. My 84 yo mother has an old family recipe for fried okra. It’s not deep fried and it’s delicious. My go to place grows it and has it set aside every week for her and honestly, I think they undercharge her because she’s always so excited when the crop comes in. Another thing I am going to start doing is canning tomatoes. My neighbor brings large bags of tomatoes and peppers from the garden every week. The peppers I can cut up and freeze. The tomatoes need to get canned. I have never done it before so I am going to teach myself this year. I really appreciate your your channel and look forward to more videos in the new year.

I've come around to a lot of these as I've reached middle age. Even though money isn't tight any more, they're still good habits to maintain to avoid overspending. For the grocery list specifically, I have a small magnetic white board on the fridge, and as I run out of stuff or notice I'm low on it, I write it down. Then when I go to make my weekly grocery list, I've got a solid starting point of stuff I already know I'll need to get. Saves having to double check the cupboards and the fridge. Instead of couponing, I'll go through the weekly sales advertisement from Publix and identify the BOGO deals on our commonly purchased name brand items (mostly teas, haha) and we'll buy them up in bulk at half off. We get the majority of our fresh whole foods at Aldi, where they're already sold at a significant discount.

I can relate to everything in one way or another. You are spot on. If you think 90’s music is old I have to tell you o will always be in the 70s & early 80s. I agree I don’t like expensive travel but I do like comfort. I’m not a coffee drinker but if I were I would invest in a travel coffee maker. This is because I’ve heard stories from people in the hospitality business that told horror stories of what people would do in the rooms & use the appliance for. Will leave it at that. It may be different with an air b&b but I’m not taking chances in a hotel room.

To be fair - sometimes we're looking back on old techniques and appreciating the nostalgia and the frugality as a combination. The nostalgia is nice, but when the frugality is the point, it's worth looking at the more modern counterparts as well to get that, e.g., free book downloads versus public library withdrawals, or where we've got more modern tools to accomplish the old-fashioned ends, such as social media applications to find people for tool borrowing instead of going door-to-door.

I have found making a monthly meal plan and planning my grocery list around it makes it so I can buy items in bulk and save money. Also after couponing a lot in Canada I've found a lazy way that works for me. Have a buy price, shop in store sales, clearance items and collect points. I always save room in my grocery budget to stock up. Loss leaders will be on the front page of flyers and they rotate those are almost always the best price. My goal is always to buy enough of them on the biggest store sale to make it to the next sale. Also planning meals to have a large roasted meat in basic flavours means I can make several meals from leftovers. Turkeys are cheap right now. I buy a few for my freezer then make turkey, soup, pot pies, sandwiches, and fajitas or something. Always make extra and have a few freezer meals put away for busy times reduces take out "needs".

I almost live at thrift stores it seems. I like the faith-based charities because they’re almost giving stuff away. I have gotten so many things that are perfectly fine at a fraction the cost if it was new. It can sometimes be addictive if you’re not careful. Simply because it’s cheap or on sale doesn’t mean it’s something you need. My mom used to drive clear across town to save 2 cents on gas. While she went shopping to buy food that was clearance that she never intended to eat but it was clearance. She would buy an insane amount too. We finally got through to her that she wasn’t doing anyone any favors. Just spending money to spend money.

I understand being stingy with electricity, but that isn’t always feasible for people with depression or other mental health problems. I actually have “bright white” bulbs in my living room to boost my mood, especially during the long, dreary winter days. I agree with most of the other frugalities.

Our local farmers market is very expensive compared to store produce. I love to go there, but it is a luxury. My local grocery store has a $10 delivery fee as does Walmart now which used to be free over $35. Now they are offering store plans that cost around $70 a year to have your food delivered and if you don’t normally have your food delivered, that’s a big cost.

Back in the 1950s and 1960s I can remember my mother having an "account book". Every week, she started out with her "housekeeping" money in her hand and every week she could account for every penny spent. She could also tell you what was in the bank account to the last penny. My father was useless with money, and he knew it! He was wise enough and humble enough to know that my mother's thifty ways were an asset and he left the budgeting to her. Every month she would show him the bank statement so that, although he never had to worry about money, she could reassure him that all was well.

I always rotate everything but I also make sure to put a the month and year on EVERYTHING with a Sharpie. If there’s no good place to write it, I use green painter’s tape and a black Sharpie just to be super sure. Although it’s not too hard to calculate say a year’s worth, you can at least take a stab at it and not be sorry.
