I know the public pretty much rejected this show, but I find it to be one of his better scores. This is great footage of her in the show and I always found it rather ironic that her staring in a show called Aspects of Love was the final nail in the coffin of their marriage. Hey Aurora! Thank you for posting this. For much of Broadway's run, successful (and some less so) productions got the film adaptation and everyone could see them. Not so much anymore, and Aspects was one of the first BIG productions to disappear completely. This is the first bit of it I've ever seen. Thank you. Sarah Brightman can sing.

Aspects of Love is a beautiful show, it is a mature show about relationships. By the time this ALW show opened it had to compete with the visual thrill rides that some audiences expected to see after Phantom, Starlight, and Cats. I think that it was too sophisticated for those who wanted to see another spectacle, and yet not sophisticated enough as a Sondheim show to appeal to others. Anything But Lonely is a spectacular song and Brightman delivers it effortlessly while showing her acting abilities, she doesn’t just belt out the song as she does brilliantly in studio recordings, but gives it a quiet vulnerability. Thank you so much for sharing this with us : )

The production was poorly done but Aspects is and always will be a bad show due to the unlikeable characters, convoluted plot, poor lyrics and icky grooming of a young girl subplot.

Sarah's music has been a part of my life since I was 9 years old. (I'm the type of 'obsessive' fan who's seen and heard everything of hers, official or unofficial, if it's managed to find its way out there). I usually tell you, "Thank you, as always, for sharing," but I really mean it... THANK YOU for sharing this particular bit of your collection. I've always wanted to see this particular scene in such stunning quality. This is miles above the circulating distant balcony footage of her. "You have truly made my night." ;-)

I think this is ALW’s most under appreciated score. I also think it’s the kind of show that really resonates more with people who have had experienced great love affairs and/or spent a lot of time in Europe. It’s difficult to understand these people unless you’ve lived similar lives.
@foreignparticle13202 жыл бұрын
What I wouldn't give to see a whole recording of the original staging - whoever the cast. ALW's beautifully evocative score, and Bjornson's beautifully fragmented set... It was really interesting to see Brightman in this clip. I only got to see her live once, in concert in 1997. By that time her voice had changed dramatically, but she had a stunning stage presence.

What a great performance! I didn't realize she was such a great actress. She definitely would have blown out her voice had she belted as she did in the studio recording of this song. I just wish I could see the ending and hear Marcus's last note.

@@iseley she doesn’t have the luxury of having her vocals prerecorded as she did in POTO. It is common knowledge that the title number is prerecorded in part. Those vocals are never sung live. There are doubles used in the staging of the number, and the final vocals of the song are never sung live. By any Christine.
@jarrodc79843 жыл бұрын
@@iseley The reason why we save our voices is so you can sing full out in performance. If you can’t sing your role, or are just walking through it maybe you should have understudy go on. The people paying full price for the tickets deserve more. She’s nowhere near the first person to sing this role. There are droves of people who can sing it full out in every performance, and not blow out their voice.

@@jarrodc7984that’s like 1 minute out of the show, so I don’t get your point. But I agree that this performance is not going very hard. She went all out in Phantom, yes even in the live bits, so I’m not sure why she’s so restrained here. Maybe it’s an off day, but in that case I agree, I’d rather see an understudy go on.

Aspects of Love was the first Broadway musical I ever saw and remains one of my favorites. The score is one of the most exquisite that ALW wrote where even the recitative and dialogue sequences standing out ("A memory of a happy moment" kind of floating in and out for example) While the story is insane, it's certainly memorable and keeps you on your toes with all it's twists and turns. I have hoped for a revival with the full orchestrations for some time, another real recording of this score and some bootlegs to pop up. Amazing how little of this show is out there. While Broadway was a financial loss, the US Tour (based on the sold-out Canadian production) was received better and it ran on the West End for over 3 years. BTW - Ann Crumb > Sarah Brightman. That woman. her belt was seemingly effortless. 30 years later I still remember her nailing that last note in this song and literally having the audience on the edge of their sears.

Interesting that from this run in 1991 until the currently-running Sunset Blvd. in Australia, 2024, she did no musical theatre. Most of her Blvd. reviews say that at best her acting is ethereal, lousy and uninvolved at worst. Her singing is wobbly and all head voice. Here, she uses quite a lot of chest voice (though smartly, not as much as her studio recording), and great mixing of chest & head. Her vibrato is quick & healthy. I think her acting here is subtle and very effective. Obviously, time takes its toll and all voices age, regardless of bad or technique. But I often wish she would've stuck with this lightly belting early style she did in her early years, vs the hooty, over-covered, popera sound she adopted in the late '90s / early 2000s.

I don't understand why anyone has ever said Sarah Brightman can't act. She's lovely in this.
@sxyghost826611 ай бұрын
A lot of the crap Brightman got happens when Phantom went to Broadway. They wanted an American actress to take over the role, but Webber wanted Sarah to bring it over to America. It makes sense considering the other 2 of the original trio were still there, and the show was written for Sarah to begin with. But critics mocked her incessantly for her “Minnie mouse” voice and her big teeth. She’s my favorite Christine, but I’ll admit that I can see why she’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But people were and still are unnecessarily harsh on her. I think her unique voice and acting choices brought a lot to the character.
@sxyghost826611 ай бұрын
@nathanaelableI wouldn’t call her on par with them, personally. I think Brightman’s voice is better than Bernadette’s, but her acting is worse. And her voice is not as strong as Patti Lupone’s. This puts her in a bit of a middle ground where her voice isn’t the strongest and her acting is just passable, so you either love her polarizing unique voice or you just don’t care for her. I think Phantom worked so well for her because it suited her vocal style, and, critically, it puts acting to the side in favor of pretty singing and melodramatic gestures and expressions. But outside of Phantom she would be hard pressed to be anyone’s favorite in anything, so it’s no wonder she left theater. And I say this as someone who adores her as Christine and as a person. I will say though, she would have made a good Cosette in Les Mis.

Sounds quite different live when compared to the studio version. I think she released this in the UK as a single (either just before or just after Aspects of Love opened in London). In the studio version, the vocals were more ‘belted’ and were certainly a lot more powerful than shown here.
