@@pleaseenteryournamehere9593 It is actually pretty common to use metaphors when talking about women. The most common one I have seen is calling a woman an "angel" or a "princess". While the intent is usually to bring up a woman, make her feel treasured and loved, it can often time lead to a sense of unworthiness. Being an angel means being blameless and pure, and we are just as capable of making mistakes as men. Being a princess implies being proper, and beautiful, and polite and many of us fall short of that standard. When it seems like the people around you see you like this amazing, surreal being of beauty, it can make you feel like a fraud. Like you don't live up. When she says "you are not made of metaphors", she is saying that the metaphors people use for you do not define you. You can be messy. You can be imperfect. You are so much more than an "angel" or a "princess". You are real, skin and bones, hair and sweat.

I like this poem very much but this line - it sounds good but what does it mean? Of course a woman's body is not made of metaphors. But that body has always been the stuff of metaphors and metaphors have always been the stuff of poetry.

@@elainedenuevo2011 What I interpret this to mean is that you shouldn't just fall for the sweet talk and the poetry, 'You are not made of metaphors' is like saying you are more than what they say you are. Being a woman is more than what they think. But that's just my interpretation and if you don't enjoy that line it's fine :) Hope this helped in some way?

@@elainedenuevo2011 I take it to mean that women are made of more than just the sweet fluff that everyone tells them they are. It seems like she is calling women to appreciate every part of themselves from the most beautiful to the most grity parts and realize the idea that women are just sweet and soft and beautiful is not the real them. It sounded like she was calling women to take an honest look at themselves and the fake ideals others put on them and realize that those ideals aren't real. At least that was my take and I personally love the imagery.

Comparing love to an ocean is the best way I could ever describe it. It is salty and it burns, but it is beautiful. When you are in the ocean if you stay still and don't fight the current you float, but if you rush you go under, your eyes sting, and you step out of the water. *snapping*

Daniel Hobgen I kinda agree, but I have a feeling that 'salty' rather refers to sweat and 'gasping' to heavy breathing after an orgasm. I think the deeper meaning is sexual, but in a meaning of women discovering herself sexually. Plus the only place (or at least the only one I've seen doing it) in which ejaculating on her face can be called 'ceremonially finishing sex' is porn. It doesn't fit in the picture in my opinion

Aga396, I didn't interpret this poem as sexual or as being explicitly about sexual metaphors. I do not believe that that is Sarah Kay's style based on the poems she has performed. Women deserve to realise that we aren't only a body that has to be looked at and not the only thing a person can explore is our bodies. Explore our mind, our facial features, our personality traits. A compliment on a rare quality is more special than a comment on how our body looks in a dress that we are wearing.

My interpretation for the mirror part is that they are not your reflection, you are not them - they are who they are and you are who you are. Do not see yourself in them. They may be familiar but they are not the same. The windows part got me into two moods. One, using them to reach out somewhere else, someplace better, someone better. Two, they are like an escape when all the doors are locked, going through them and seeing the light, finding a way, gasping for fresh air after suffocating in a closed house (as in a way out of depression). Would love more input!

If you grow up the type of woman men want to look at, You can let them look at you. But do not mistake eyes for hands or windows or mirrors. Let them see what a woman looks like. They may have not ever seen one before. If you grow up the type of woman men want to touch, You can let them touch you. Sometimes, it is not you they are reaching for. Sometimes it is a bottle, a door, a sandwich, a Pulitzer - another woman. But their hands found you first. Do not mistake yourself for a guardian or a muse or a promise or a victim or a snack. You are a woman - skin and bones, veins and nerves, hair and sweat. You are not made out of metaphors, not apologies, not excuses. If you grow up the type of woman men want to hold, You can let them hold you. All day they practice keeping their bodies upright. Even after all this evolving it still feels unnatural. Still strains the muscles, hold firms the arms and spine. Only some men will want to learn what it feels like to curl themselves into a question mark around you, Admit they do not have the answers they thought they would by now. Some men will want to hold you like the answer. You are not the answer. You are not the problem. You are not the poem or the punch-line or the riddle or the joke. Woman, if you grow up the type men want to love, You can let them love you. Being loved is not the same thing as loving. When you fall in love, it is discovering the ocean after years of puddle jumping. It is realizing you have hands. It is reaching for the tightrope when the crowds have all gone home. Do not spend time wondering if you are the type of women men will hurt. If he leaves you with a car alarm heart, you learn to sing along. It is hard to stop loving the ocean even after it has left you gasping - "salty." So forgive yourself for the decisions you've made. The ones you still call mistakes when you tuck them in at night and know this: Know you are the type of woman who is searching for a place to call yours. Let the statues crumble. You have always been the place. You are a woman who can build it yourself. You are born to build.

i love watching such a recent performance of this poem. sarah's rendition is now more mature and it makes you appreciate what she may have gone through since, or just generally her improvement as a performer.

.... I listen to this poem on repeat every night to go to sleep. The sentences "You are NOT the answer!" and "You are THE place - you have always been the place." make me brave. If you are reading this and know how to download this, please let me know!

Dear admin of Button Poetry, I really want to contribute translation of this beautiful poem into my native language (Indonesian). May I do it? If yes, could you please turn on "Add subtitles/CC" in the Setting options so that I can add the subtitles? Thank you very much.

Today is going to be one of the hardest days of my life. I am in love with a man but he is forcing me to bend and he dose not bend. So i decided to make the diction to leave him even though his love is strong and i love him more and more. as i type this my face is covered in tears but not actually water running down my face, i have cried to much for that but the feeling you get when you are ready to let go but you are still clinging to the thread he holds while you dangle from a cliff. i made the diction to let go of the thread and i realize that the ground was right there. i thank Sarah Kay for helping me to get threw this. so far her poem has helped the most

I love this. Being a woman is not just being successful or strong or stoic. It is about knowing to be vulnerable, to be trusting, accepting, and caring. It is about loving someone and accepting you can get hurt and still move on when you need to. And continue to believe in your own identity as unique, present, and special.

I first watched this five years ago and it has stayed with me ever since. Recently I found myself watching videos of Sarah's spoken word poetry again and tonight I decided to watch this. It's amazing how this becomes more meaningful as time goes by. I hope every woman gets to watch this to remind them how amazing they are. 💙💙💙
