Miss, anyone who sings Phil Ochs does the world good. A seemingly forgotten voice.

I sing this extra verse. Hope no-one objects. There’s no place in this world you don’t belong, though you’re gone; You help us see the right from the wrong, though you’re gone, And we still hear you singing on your songs though you’re gone, And we’re just so glad you did it while you were here. (Slide over the “were”.)

I like Sarah Lee's singing of this moving song better than Phil's. I guess I'm not supposed to. What can I say? I Sarah Lee is Arlo's daughter-Arlo has given us so much, even beautiful children. Sarah Lee is so wonderfully fragile-looking and gentle to me, and so sincere, and her singing reflects those qualities. This song says what I try to live by but fail to most of the time. Thank you for it. And I thank Sarah Lee, Phil Ochs, and Arlo.
@johninsouthjersey7 жыл бұрын
It is my favorite version, including Phil's. Are we in trouble Stan. :-)

Guillotine for both of us, John. But Phil has plenty other great songs he wrote and sang. I doubt Sarah Lee could cover all of them as well as Phil originally sang them (or others covered them). I also loved her cover of Pete Seeger’s “Sailing Down My Golden River.” To me, in this case, both were great but each a bit different. She appeared younger in that video.
@forrestben59814 жыл бұрын
It's a lovely cover, but honestly, and as objectively as I can feel it, no; his version is truly more heartfelt and tortured. He was bipolar and I can feel his joy and pain when I hear him singing this song. When I first heard it sometime in the early 1960s I didn't know he was bipolar, but still felt his depths even then. She does a beautiful job, yes, but no one can touch Phil's original, like no one can touch Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah.

In memory of Phil Ochs, I wrote this song … Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … They’ll turn on him fast, like the hands of his broken clock. Load them double quick, lock and stock. Pick him out of that picket line; and cloud his mind, far worse than doing time. But you go walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … The authorities knew all along Even a broken clock ain’t always wrong So take in your fill of wild oaks As the truth slowly chokes Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … And how many oaks, they joked, to make the Bureau’s file? As it went round the bend, for mile after mile; taking with it Phil and his smile. Walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … And to his tune, the trees softly sway first this way and now that But he can’t make it pay So you’d better pass the hat And walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … Yes, walk the hills Breathe the beauty of his song The words are Phil’s Circling high where they belong … Words Ed Fram (1.1.22)
