the bizarre thing is that stones and pounds (and ounces) are the same measuring system - it's so funny to me that some americans act like 14 pounds to a stone is so crazy but they're fully okay with 16 ounces to a pound. the whole thing's a mess and you use it way more than we do, lol

Same. I think younger generations are starting to use metric more now but I very much still use Stones/lbs for weight & feet & inches for height, and we pretty much all use miles for distance. I don't know if it is a hang up from the classic, long, wooden metre rulers we had at school when I was a kid but I only really use metric when talking measurements 1 metre or less, lol. I just find it easier to visualise things like height in my head when talking 6ft 2 (or whatever) compared to 178cm or 1.78m tall ... they make no sense to me either. The weirdest one is going to the shop to buy some milk and seeing 1 pint and 1 litre next to each other in the fridge, lol

Most people in uk refer to their mother as Mum. Sarah Millican says Mam because she comes from the north of England ie ‘Mammy’ instead of Mummy’. It’s an area accent thing. I am 80 yrs old have never really converted to metric. I always give my weight in stones and pounds. A stone being 14 lbs. Our weighing machines give the reading in both Imperial and Metric. We still refer to miles per gallon when driving. Not miles per litre and distances in miles. We were fine until we entered the European Union.

Using different names for the toilet facility would be a great way of showing levels of urgency without actually mentioning it. Anything from "Excuse me madam, could you direct me to your restroom?" to "Where's the crapper, woman?!"

yes, stone is very common - particularly in reference to body weight. Mum is the equivalent of Mom, but in the north of England and many parts of Wales you will hear 'Mam' used instead. 'Ma' is common in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Confusingly the term ma'am which is an abbreviation of madam may be heard in reference senior female officers in the police and armed forces, it is pronounced like 'farm'. The queen would be referred to with ma'am. ie 'yes ma'am' if your officer was female, if your officer was male it would be 'yes sir'.

I was in the hospital recently and had this conversation: Me: "You know when you just measured me, could you tell me my height? I've always wanted to know." Nurse: "Oh, sure thing! You are... 174 centermeters" :D Me: "Great! Thanks! What's that in feet?" Nurse: "I've no idea hun, you'll have to google it."

Ma'am is a polite term to address a woman like you were saying. Mam and Mum are terms commonly used in England for mother depending on what region you're from. Yes we would say 9 stone 7 pounds because it's the correct way :) and is much easier to visualise than 133 pounds, but just to make it more difficult we also use kilogrammes ☹ damn Europe!
@daveofyorkshire301

Many will say their weight is 12 stone 7 instead of 79Kg often ignoring the 0.4Kg, anything less than a bag of sugar (1Kg aka 2.2lbs) is rounded. For a woman losing up to a kilogramme of weight is highly preferable. Biscuits and gravy is probably seen the same as you see haggis. It's the most revolting combination I can think of...

It's stone, singular, no matter how much, so say 'I weigh 9 stone 4,' meaning 9.4 stone. Although most people will usually just round down or up in conversation rather than being specific like Americans, so it'll just usually be 9 stone cos nobody really cares about the pounds unless they're dieting. Also Mam is more of a Northern thing, like Newcastle, Sunderland, Manchester etc. and probably derived from Mammy rather than Mummy. Mum is usually the norm in the rest of the UK, with a sprinkling of Mom here and there depending on preference.

16 ounces is one pound. 14 pounds one stone. 10 stone one hundred weight and 20 hundred weight one ton. The metric system is much easier to use and the only reason that road signs are in miles in the UK is because the cost to change all the signs would be huge . . .

It's a British peculiarity to use the, "Stone," weight system, like many things here it's probably so old most of us never bother to ask where it came from or why we still use it, although it's less popular with the younger generation I believe. Basically a Stone is 14 pounds 🤔😁

Lots of old people still use Stones as a body weight measurement 1 stone is 14 lbs So it's multiples of 14 lbs & pounds ( eg if someone weighs 150lbs, that's 10 stone 10 lbs), Don't ask me why stone became a weight measurement it just is.🤷🏽 Most people under 50 probably use kilos as metric weight started being used more when we decimalised our money in 1971 and we were heading towards joining The European Economic Community or EEC( the EU as it was called back then).

What confuses Brits is the US habit of weighing very large objects in pounds….like a truck weighing 20,000 pounds. We use bigger denominations for that scale - tons, (or metric tonnes), hundredweight, etc etc.
@frankripley6401

“Stones” as units of weight came into use in the UK during the 19th Century so never became a thing in the USA. So actually your use of pounds is the older usage. And while today it is mainly used for body weight, not too long ago( before metrication) it was very commonly used for bulk commodities, potatoes for example. Old taters used to be sold & priced by the stone - there’s a phrase I haven’t heard for years, old potatoes. Just meant last years crop stored in clamps out in the field & then brought in, cleaned a bit & sold. At school we had to learn “ 16 ounces 1 pound(lb), 14 lbs 1 stone, 8 stones 1 hundredweight (cwt., 112 lbs),20 cwt one ton (2240lb)”. Together with the pre decimal currency ( 12 pence(d) one shilling(s), 20 s one pound(£) ) meant we were quite good at mental arithmetic, no calculators. Happy days!

I still say 5 foot 8 inches rather than 1 metre 73 centimetres. GRAVY is BROWN. Made from the meat juices of the meat you are eating ,with added onions and gravy granules/stock cube. No " biscuits" in UK KFC.....thank God ! MAM is a very Northern word for MUM in the UK.

It's complicated! lol. I can visualise 2 stone and the metric equivalent 13 Kg, but I cannot visualise 28lbs !! If someone tells me their weight in stones I get it without even needing to think about it. If they tell me in Kg It takes me a second or two to convert it to stones in my head. If they tell me in lbs I'm stumped unless it's something really easy like 140lbs because I know that it's 10 stone. So yeah, stones are widely used in Britain. I'm in my late 50s which means I spent my early childhood outside of the European Ecconomic Community and the Metric system.

Mam is more Northern England, which Sarah is. Generally, Mummy gets shortened to Mum as you get older. Older generations tend to say Mother. The term "Mam" is used when addressing the late Queen Elizabeth II or the current Queen Camilla on introduction. You say Your Majesty afterwards you say "Mam".All Female royalty, whether Princess or Duchess, it's Your Royal Highness, and then Mam. Weight, a person's weight is referred to in stones 14lb is 1 stone, this reference is dying out as the National Health Service has been weighing patients in Kilograms for nearly 30 years.

Calling your mother 'mam' vs 'mum' is a regional thing here in the UK - I believe there are some parts (possibly down South?) where people say 'mom'. I'm from the North East, like Sarah, and in my town 'mum' and 'mam' are probably equally popular terms. When you're talking about James Bond, you mean "ma'am" rather than "mam" - they're different terms. And stones are used for weight still, although kg are sort of gaining more popularity I think. I find stone easier to understand in terms of a weight reference, but that's just because I'm more used to it. I measure height in both feet and cm though - I prefer saying I'm 157cm as people judge you when you say you're 5"1 and a half 😂 (the half is important!!!)

Stone is a very old English way of measuring weight. Why would you assume that they would teach this in the US? We can barely get the metric system right.

@@jcs1025 Agree. If someone doesn't know something it doesn't mean they are inferior. It's up to you to inform them in the most courteous way you can.

Good little video just to clear up the language differences between our countries. Although mam is more regional,l live in the north and we say mum or mother depending on the situation. The hedgehog died out in the seventies,bad British food she obviously eats in the wrong places. Just to clear up biscuits are cut out from a sheet , cookies are not, French fries are thin cut potatoes and chips are larger pieces of potatoes both fried. Conclusion: l think she did this for comedy effect and her videos are becoming popular in the US,no p.c.

I think your biscuits are like our scones, not in their consistency, but in their cultural uniqueness. What other country has American biscuits and what other country has British scones? As for the gravy, we like ours beefy and full of flavour (probably to give some flavour to our bland food).
