Sarah Willis Horn Masterclass live from London - March 14th, 2013

Highlights from Sarah Willis´s Horn Masterclass at the Royal Academy of Music which was streamed live on the internet and viewers from around the world joined in with their questions via live web chat.
Here the Academy students play solo pieces and orchestral exerpts and Sarah is joined by Martin Owen who manned the chat during the class.

There's something about the French horn that is so pure, musical, and engaging. Incredible playing.

ShShSh1992 A bumper is often someone who will a help out a (usually principal) hornist who has to play a lot of high solos. All the high solos can be super taxing on a horn player('s lip) and so the bumper helps them by playing the lower "unimportant" parts and run-ups to solos so the principal can save their lip for the more important high solos. They also often just join in on loud parts or alternate with the first horn if it's a tiring part.

Interesting to note that Elise Campbell appeared at the Proms this year (playing second to Richard Watkins in a Mozart serenade at the Cadogan Hall), so Sarah's teaching seems to have been a success!

Not sure the accompanist was doing any favours to Elise in the Mozart 4th concerto! Sounded really like he was thinking, let's get this over with...she sounded so much better in the cadenza.

Interesting to hear that you don't use bumpers in Germany, Sarah. I saw the Vienna Phil at the Proms last week (Bruckner 8 with Maazel - amazing) and they had a bumper. So, in that respect at least, Austria differs from Germany. On a related point, orchestras always seem to field four horns (plus bumper) for Beethoven 7, when it is only scored for two. It's a hard blow but even so ... Presumably the BPO takes the purist approach and just uses two.

A bumper is an extra horn player assisting solo horn (principal horn/first horn) because it is too heavy to play all alone. They either play together with first horn in some places, or playing alone giving principal horn some rest.
