When at the Old time square, you were maybe 300 meters from the best exchange office with the best exchange rates in Prague (Exchange, Kaprova ulice). Also if you get ripped off in an exchange office and you find out within 3 hours, they must according to the law return your money to you....

A lesson learned: never use currency exchange offices, especially in the center of Prague. Always use ATMs, ideally from major banks. And when you see "zero commission" advertised somewhere in the center, it actually means hefty hidden fees.
@Pidalin3 жыл бұрын
Why the hell tourists change money in those little exchange offices? It's still mystery for me, when I visit different country, I change money in my country or I just get it from ATM (not from ATM called just "ATM" but from ATM of some local bank), why changing money after arrive? It doesn't make sense to me, CZK is normal currency, you can get it even in your country, it's not anything rare. It looks like changing money after arrive is something typicaly british and american, I don't know how in South Africa, maybe they don't have Czech crowns there. BTW, when you don't have other option than use exchange office, use at least calc in your phone, you can easily prevent that they give you 100 instead of 1000 and such situations, tourists are just....stupid, you should know what currency they use in country you are visiting and what is exchange rate, you don't have to know it exactly, but at least know if it's cca 25 CZK for eur or 100 CZK, that will help you. :-)

Although an exchange place is advertised as no commission it could just be exchanging at a really bad rate.
@SarahandMarek3 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how they got us 😔
@ultramarinus2478 Жыл бұрын
Was scammmed twice. First at the exchange office (EVERY exchange office with 0% commission is at least BAD DEAL, or outright scam). Second in the restaurant (because you went into restaurant ON THE MAIN TOURIST ROUT in the city. If you went only few streets AWAY, you could eat for half of the price. BTW if you went for the ham, you would pay circa 5 times the usual price on ANY OTHER selling point in Prague.

It happens only to tourists who are not prepared and don't know even what currency is used in country they travel to. When you don't even know what currency we have and what is the trasfer rate, you can't be surprised that someone will cheat you, such tourists are like magnet for cheaters, they have written it on forehead "I have know idea, just give me some money."

There is czech national bank right behind the guy with drums. I don't find any issues with ATM withdrawals in Prague. It's definitely better to withdraw from ATM which is outside the bank or inside supermarkets for your security. I think it's best to check the conversion online before your exchange. So you know how much money to expect in advance so you could negotiate about the rate. Some of these kiosks don't have commission based on percentage but they have exchange fee which could be very high but I experience same with some money transfers like Western Union so it's completly legal I'm afraid.

If you need to do your own walking tour in Prague, Rick Steves has a free podcast you can download! It comes with a map and everything. It’s very cheesy but informative and nice because you can go at your own pace and stop and start as you go! 👟 So sorry about the rip off, it was definitely really intimidating there. We try to bring our local currency then ask the hotel to exchange!

Getting scammed is such a terrible feeling. I started budgeting like $50 a trip for a scam budget. Then If I get scammed I say "Oh that comes out of my scam budget" It's purely psychological but it helps a little. And as a youtuber you can at least say it creates interesting content and maybe others can learn from it.
@SarahandMarek3 жыл бұрын

Ah so sorry you guys were ripped off. Why don't you like to use ATM machines? If you have time do the free walking tour up to the castle, it's great. I remember food and beer was so cheap in Czech Republic. Another must see place is Chesky Kromlov. Can't wait for your food tour.
@SarahandMarek3 жыл бұрын

@@SarahandMarek ATM usually ends up being the better option. You just need to be careful to decline a service called DCC (dynamic currency conversion). It's almost never beneficial. Just always let ATM to charge you in local currency and let your own bank take care of the conversion. Or just choose shops that let you pay with your card directly.

Prague remains a mine field. You can get ripped in restaurants, cafes, taxis, parking places or exchange offices. The Czech economy is doing pretty well but people very often go on behaving like in a Third World country.

It's really unfortunate to hear that 😩 it's such a beautiful city and the locals are really friendly! It's so sad that things like this continue to happen 🙈

I was cheated in café in Vienna, we had 2 cappucinos, but on the bill, there was 2x eggs with ham for little higher price, this never happened to me in Czechia, when they cheat you, they mostly don't give you bill at all, my father didn't even noticed that, but I saw how much cappucino should be in menu, so I was curious why it was more.
