It's that time of year...when the breeze is warm enough to be on the coast for a while without freezing! Which means I'm getting outside as often as possible to draw and paint. The focus now is to improve my architectural and streetscape sketching. Urban sketching is difficult where I live because we are in the countryside, but I can go to small towns nearby to practice. #watercolor #pleinair
Tools:
Strathmore Sketchbook (discontinued)
Sailor Fude 55 degree nib with Peter Moss ink by Ferris Wheel Press (green)
Derwent Line Maker Sepia .5 Pen
Daniel Smith Watercolors
Orange Posca Pen
Rain
Thanks Wolfy for filming me!

Since I live in the countryside, it's hard to get immerse in an urban environment unless I go to one of the "BIG" cities 😜 but I will visit lots of little towns which offer their own charming version of 'urban' backdrops. Next time I might try my dried gouache palette. And I also want to take my alcohol markers out for a spin...

I quite like the stone buildings you have in Scotland. I was born there but moved to New Zealand when I was 2 so although there are some interesting old buildings to sketch here, it's a much younger country so there isn't the history in the buildings, that there is in Scotland. Do you have any Urban Sketching groups near you? The symposium was held here in Auckland about a month ago but I didn't know about it until too late. My little town doesn't have a group unfortunately, as it's something that's really starting to interest me. Have you seen Albert Kiefer's urban scenes done with the alcohol markers? I really like his work. It looks a lot like watercolor but it's all done with layering the markers. Yes please to more urban sketching 👍😃

He he 😁. I live in Switzerland. The first Swiss usk symposium was held in a village that’s literally been around since the 9th century (not nineteenth, ninth) and has a population of about 1200. We had a lot of discussions about what qualifies as urban.

This video reminded me of the time I stopped at a local nature walk to do some Plein Air painting. I chose this spot specifically because the grass was long. The grass had so much character and it was so beautifully lit the sunlight falling through the trees. Then while I was painting the local council maintenance workers came and mowed the grass down. I had a little giggle and finished my hot thermas coffee. I mean what else can you do? I happen to accidentally choose lawn mowing day.

Fun. I hope you get to paint those amazing clouds and dunes with the old piers. What a great landscape. I share your frustration about the moving cars and people. I do the permanent stuff first and add the mobile stuff (or leave them out because I suck at painting people). urban sketching is my excuse to grab lunch in town.

Thank you for the best urban sketch video I've seen on ArtTube! I've seen 'quite a few' (English understatement) in my quest for help with my 'new' plein air environment and been disappointed every time. ('New only in the sense that after almost 7 years here, it's only recently that I've actually been able to go and do it in the local town - boring, long story! - and even now, not on the regular basis I long for! This was calm, no mention of "You only get about 20 minutes before the light changes", simply a comment that it took an hour to do the two sketches. No grumbles about the weather, just a humorous comment about the rain and finding a way to embrace and incorporate the rain drops. No really messy scribbles, but relaxed drawing... I think what makes the difference is that we're both 'open landscape' painters doing urban sketching, and with landscape / pastoral / coastal painting, we paint to a different time scale, very different techniques, with a different attitude to weather, changing light, no stress if someone / something moves, etc, but just taking it all in our stride. So again, thank you Sarah. I begin to feel 'normal' again. I'd love to see you paint more of your local small town 'cityscapes', with a mix of gouache sometimes, watercolour sometimes (I mostly use watercolour & / or pencil). If this is anything to go by, it'll help me a lot to relax more and just do my own thing when I'm face on to a 13th century plaster and beam building instead of my comfort zone of farmhouses, barns, huge fields, big, weather-full skies, wide-open spaces and large paintings using big washes of colour and contrast. 😊

What I love about drawing/painting buildings is the scale/perspective challenge. It really forces me to SEE..like properly see. Not just look. And overall it makes me a more accurate draftsman (if I keep going) My addiction to learning gets excited by this kind of challenge
@MrsBarnabas
@MrsBarnabas Жыл бұрын
@@SarahBurnsStudio Yes!!!!! to all of that! _My addiction to learning gets excited by this kind of challenge_ Yes! I need to apply this to the urban sketching as I do to other things as well as other art. I need to kick-start my '"This is a new adventure" mode. I've just been so ... bogged down and tired due to life-stuff which I can't see how to resolve (a difficulty for someone who's used to dealing with and enjoying challenges and problem-solving, so it's all a totally weird feeling!). Consequently, over the last few months, I've let myself get really homesick for the first time in the seven years I've been here - not for the UK itself, but for the beautiful little house and garden I left behind and big, open spaces, countryside and sea, and the freedom of large, expressive washes and colour, and ... yes, as someone who made a similar major, overseas move at the same time as I made mine, I guess you understand a bit of this... I've not 'said it out loud' before! Time to shake myself out of this non-productive, self-destructive, weird place I'm in, remember that I've had some superb encouragement occasionally, that I have a wonderful, ever-present friend in the God who loves me unreservedly, and work with what is till 'what is' is better, however long it seems to be taking. _My addiction to learning gets excited by this kind of challenge_ Thanks again, Sarah! 😊
@SarahBurnsStudio

@@MrsBarnabas I understand, and I hope you find ways to get back to your natural state of being. I can recommend this book to help shake off the cobwebs: "The Creative Act: A Way of Being" by Rick Rubin (I kind of want to share it in a video because it has so many AH HA moments...) I'll just leave you with this quote: “Living life as an artist is a practice. You are either engaging in the practice or you’re not. It makes no sense to say you’re not good at it. It’s like saying, “I’m not good at being a monk.” You are either living as a monk or you’re not. We tend to think of the artist’s work as the output. The real work of the artist is a way of being in the world.”
@MrsBarnabas
@MrsBarnabas Жыл бұрын
@@SarahBurnsStudio Sarah, thank you for being so understanding! I went and made a cup of tea after my comment, and thought, "It is so silly, because once I'm on site, _I love the challenge_ !" And it's true. It _is_ silly! It's all the stuff which keeps preventing me from being able to actually get out, to _be_ there and which is currently impossible to resolve, and so, of course, I begin to over-think... _"You are either living as a monk or you’re not."_ or as a hermit ... Circumstances have limited me to home a lot of the time, but for sure, I'm no hermit - I enjoy passer-by interaction when I'm out far too much to enjoy hermitage life! And this, too, is very, very true: _"The real work of the artist is a way of being in the world.”_ because an artist isn't just someone who creates with brush, paint and paper (or whichever of the many media available for making art of all sorts), but someone whose natural curiosity, creativity, imagination and relationship with the world around them has a positive effect, whether the artist is conscious of it, or not. Sleep well, Sarah! I'm off to bed as soon as I've finished my cuppa and tidied the kitchen.🛌 😊

I want to thank you so much for everything you do. Your presence here on KZbin brings me encouragement when I am struggling. Right now I am working on a 17x23 inch gouache on canson 140 lb paper with my new brushes designed by you!!! It's a real challenge to paint a gouache at the size. Have you? And if you have do you have any pointers? I would love to hear your experience on painting gouache in large sizes.
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio Жыл бұрын
Oh wow, that's big paper! I think the biggest gouache I've done is 12x16? I still always start with a more diluted wash of color to kind of establish the major shapes or get some fun color flow to work with. Then naturally build up the layers and get thicker on top. I guess it just involves more paint!

Most people don't stare over my shoulder. 95% of them walk by, pause and say "beautiful" or "that's coming along nicely." Not often someone stays long and stares. But if I notice it, I just start chatting to them. I often find they have never seen an artist working in person, so it simply fascinates them. OR it's someone who has a relative who paints :) haha...but yea, I just don't care. I either get a good conversation or I just keep painting and ignore them if they are just stopping quickly.

Yes! I would love to see more architecture paintings in gouache. What a coincidence my summer challenge this year is to start painting more urban sketches. I have been loving all the city and town landscapes done by fellow artists now I want to try. Your upcoming workshop is perfect timing lol. Loving your videos, thank you for posting.

Thank you for sharing your urban sketching, really enjoyed. It is good to get some architecture in your sketchbook and I would like see more from you. You always inspire me with all that you do. Watched your vlog over breakfast this morning beautiful imagery and honest chat………I understand how being in the wild landscape in Scotland envelopes you. I always think of my holidays in Scotland as soul cleansing, that’s how it makes me feel. Keep up the good work and I would like you to know that I really appreciate all that you do.

Nice to see you practice urbansketching. It does not have to be in a big city. Even your neighbors house can be fun to draw. (And good practice) Love your landscapes too by the way

Yea I was thinking of drawing some local homes I just don't like feeling like a creeper. The other day I saw a beautiful rose bush blooming over my neighbors trash bins and I was like I need to paint that! 😂

Absolutely beautiful as always Sarah! And can I just say that I had to watch the very beginning of your video a couple of times because that transition of you walking past you logo was just so smooth and perfect. Your videos are always so enjoyable to watch because of the amazing cinematography, the inspiring art, and your calm/genuine personality. Keep up all of your hard work :)

I would love to know more about the birds that pop up in your videos. I wonder if you have many migratory birds over there ? And anything you choose to paint I will enjoy watching...raindrops and all.

The one at the end was a Grey Heron, very common here, and yes many migratory birds

That was great, Sarah! Thank you! Can you please note here, if possible, what kind of pens you were using and maybe also what dagger brush? It’s funny that you said at the end something like as urban as it can be here. That was my first thought: when you walked into town it looked so quaint. I’m so used to seeing your surroundings that seem so serene and pristine, so it was crazy to see you drawing the buildings and then flip around to the peaceful ocean! I wouldn’t have guessed they were in the same place! I love window panes, too! Maybe it has something to do with “order?” or pattern/repetition? Yes, please, more “urban” drawings. It’s fun to see the contrast between those and your other work. Thanks, again!

I'd love to see that in gouache! I am the same in that I love landscapes and nature but I find architecture really challenging. Lately though I have been interested in sketching and painting architecture. I think your paintings are lovely☺

I've started doing the blocks of colour loosely in watercolour and then drawing the buildings etc in with a fine ink liner over the top as I wanted things to feel looser too. I find It's really hard to be loose when I like to be precise and am fighting my crippling perfectionist streak 🙈

I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your urban sketching. I'm trying to do more of that myself, because my version of "urban sketching" so often turns into a focus on that flower growing in a crack in the sidewalk. 😂
