This year I decided to venture from watercolor to gouache, that’s how I found your channel. I’ve already learned so much from your videos, I even built a makeshift plain air set up with my old camera tripod and bought a backpack. My friends have a home in the forest so I‘ll be bringing some mosquito spray and venturing to their place soon, you are a great inspiration and your paintings are so beautiful, I love your use of colors and brush strokes. I tried several times to plein air with acrylics but always struggled. That is why I took the plunge and have begun to work with watercolor and gouache. Much easier to cart around and I don't have to worry about how fast they dry. I am looking forward to this summer when I can plein air like a boss!

That is crazy. I could not have described the type of art I want to create any better than you just did. Fluid, free, and wild,, but actually looking very much like the subject or reference. I will someday hit the mark. Sadly I am really good at hyper realistic watercolor. Like portraits, animals, still life, even babies....ugh and so in order to notl always feel discouraged about my semi abstract that doesn't turn out exactly as I wanted, I paint realistic...boring things just to remind myself I still got it, at least until I reach my stylistic goals. It’s OK to paint what you’re comfortable with. It keeps your skills sharp. Devote a little time each week (if possible) to trying new things. Over time those new things become normal and your skills grow wider

I’m an oil painter- but I once asked an acrylic painter about open acrylics and she suggested adding open white which extends the drying time of whatever you mix it with. Maybe that’s a happy middle ground between extended open time and what you’re typically used to with acrylics.

I never put enough acrylic down on the palette (penny pinching I guess and not wanting to waste) and then by the time I get the colour I want it's nearly dried. It get's so frustrating. You have the coolest business cards going. I enjoyed your Glasgow trip to the gallery, that interesting. I hope your plein air painting meet-up goes well.

Appreciated hearing that you're a bit anxious about your art event, as I am leaving for a week long Illustration Intensive class. Sarah....I used to use golden open acrylics....slow drying acrylics....it's almost feels like oils in their blending drying times etc...but they are too watery unlike heavy body acrylics....best thing about them was I can make stay wet palette for weeks to come...I left acrylics for single reason...they aren't eco-friendly.

It always astonishes me when people say that. I have been cursed by anxiety my whole life, panic attacks, etc. Being in nature is the only thing that calms me down. Therapy helps. But talking to a camera in a controlled environment is much different to talking to real people 😂 I don't want to miss out on life experiences due to anxiety so I just force myself to do things.

You're welcome! When I worked on canvas I would do an outline drawing in charcoal of my subject. Then when I used to work in oil I would, in one layer, paint the subject using paint directly out of the tube and mix on the canvas. When I did acrylic for a while I started with the outline in charcoal again and then put down a layer of paint with the light and dark patches where they needed to go. On top of that I would then paint everything in detail. Now I am back to doing what I truly love, illustration, and so I tend to draw my subject in pencil, ink it with dip pens and then watercolor. However, if I were doing something more semi-realistic I would still probably draw it and then paint it, only in more layers now since I don't do oil or acrylic anymore. I have honestly had a hard time getting used to painting in layers given how I started out with painting in oil and only doing one layer.

I hope your plein air weekend went well! I understand the social anxiety, as I personally experience it too. I found a local chapter of Urban Sketchers who do monthly events (mostly plein air). Starting to attend these has helped me get out and 'art in public' more. I hope your event allowed you to be creative, meet new people, and (how I phrase it) remove a layer (of anxiety) 😁

Toward the end when you talked about getting used to mixing in a new medium, I had to laugh and nod. I started out with watercolor, and I'm far from an expert -- or even really *competent* yet -- but I've gotten used to mixing colors in watercolor. When I tried gouache, the difference really threw me for a loop. o_O I read early on that you should mix more color than you think you'll need, so I tend to throw away a lot of paint :P which isn't a *huge* deal with watercolor, since it's mostly water, but with gouache (and now acrylic) it's aggravating. But anyway, I'd be going along trying to get a particular color, adding a bit of this, some of that, no now I need more of this, dammit more of that, now some white, etc., etc. Getting light/pastel colors is particularly vexing; I got used to starting with the base color and adding water. That strategy doesn't work so well with opaque paint. I had a set of jelly gouaches, and I used up my white within just a few paintings. :/ By the time I had the color I wanted, I had enough paint to do the damn livingroom, and I only had to paint like three square inches of paper. [laugh/headdesk] I've since learned to mix a light color by starting with white and adding color, rather than the other way around, but I'm just lucky Himi sells bags of refill gouache. :D For me, getting to the point where I can get the color I want, and have just a little more paint than I actually need at that point, is highly aspirational. [wry smile] I'm better at it now than I was, but I'm still working on levelling up that particular skill. Even now I need a lot more mixing space than an experienced artist. I watch James Gurney doing plein aire gouache paintings with a mixing space the size of a 3x5 card, and it's just boggling. Some day. :D

Your comment made me chuckle 😆 we've all been there. At first there are sooooooo many hurdles - each of ours are different. It sounds like you are developing a good strategy for reaching your goal. I suggest doing lots of small studies at first - like 4x6" then move up to 5x7" which allows you to practice color mixing on a smaller scale then slowly increase the amount as you get used to it. For me, I spent the first year or two using an A5 sketchbook and just busting out tons of sketches. Any time I tried a bigger painting I struggled mixing enough paint. But now, it's a breeze purely because of that brush mileage.

Thanks for this, Sarah! Sorry you've had a really windy day!!! It's the one weather condition that I find really challenging, because of my attention being taken up with making sure the big fisherman's brolly doesn't fly off, grabbing the tray with paints and water cups ... I guess you know this scenario very well! We were painting in a flat / slightly hilly, but still very open landscape a lot of the time, so, like you on the beach, there were some ferocious winds sometimes, and in summer, we were dealing with dust instead of sand. Those business cards are beautiful! What a glorious idea! I'm glad that you discovered about the acrylics before you went! It would have really spoiled things for you, I think. I'll be interested to see over time how you develop your vision with these. BTW, I only found your question about the brush conditioner just now - and have answered it 'over there'. Yes, it even works with brushes from The Works, or (in US terms) the $ store. It won't clog brushes, just as it doesn't clog our hair, because it's designed to wash out easily. Hope tomorrow goes well and you can really relax and enjoy the experience.

Great video Sarah Cass art is great I splashed out on the complete set of Sennelier oil pastels 120 pastels with my birthday money. I love having a look around charity shops found this great book, how to paint fast loose and bold by Patti Mollica she paints a lot in acrylic. I have the golden heavy body acrylics but haven’t tried the open acrylics yet. I love going to art shops as well. One of my best buys from a charity shop was a print of an Iona painting by one of my favourite Scottish artists Jolomo got it for 4 pounds a bargain.

I usually choose the frame color based on the paintings, for these I wanted to give a very ‘light airy’ feeling so i felt the white worked best. But I think on most walls, a darker frame works better?

Hey Sarah, I really enjoyed your video and the length. We got a bit of everything. I haven’t painted with acrylic in years and was a beginner painter at the time. I’ve been eyeballing the set up you have with the gorilla chair and bag set up. Last year I had great difficulty standing and then had back surgery. I was finally able to get out this year and broke my ankle, and 3 weeks later tripped again and broke my right foot so now I’m in 2 boots which means I can’t drive. But I can ride an atv (using my hands to drive, and I’m in a rural beach town so it’s doable I think but sitting would be helpful! I’m also wondering which umbrella you got that allows ambient light to come through. I have a very large umbrella that sticks into the ground so it won’t pull my art over if I’m out in the wind here on Lake Huron beaches. But it is so dark that it can confuse my eyes when it is bright and I’m in darkness. Ugh!. Right now I just want to get out there and paint but I’m frustrated with the boots, and I’m also getting my sons wedding ready. They’re getting married out in the woods near our home in the forest and I’m the designated decorator. We are doing a nature theme, so I’m busy working on how to incorporate moss on tables and wood and stones and ferns under water and floating candles and all that (bringing the forest in). It’s a lot to keep track of. Painting has been hard to work in. My sister and her husband just got back from their 3rd trip to Scotland. We were supposed to go but I always seem to have a catastrophe going on! Hopefully next spring. Anyway, I really enjoyed your video, oh and I just splurged and bought your books! Can’t wait to get my hands on them! Much love from the states❤️

Coincidentally, I had in my mind to use my acrylics and go abstract with burgundy, yellow, and turquoise but it took me 4 days-today was the day. I began with watercolor 3 years ago and I’m learning Gouache but I barely do acrylics and I never do abstract. I morphed it toward realism. Do you have any more advice about mixing watercolor with white gouache or maybe have some videos to recommend about the topic? I have some more watercolors that I want to buy but I also want to try gouache because I feel like I am missing that thicker consistency with watercolor but I can't afford both at the moment. I also feel that I am not always inspired but the color choices available for gouache so that is why I am thinking about trying mixing watercolor with white gouache...I don't know, I just feel like I am missing something with my watercolors but I can't seem to figure out what😅 Good luck on the plein air event! Yes I prefer starting with a middle tone. Unless it’s watercolor

How do you find time to paint so much? I feel like this is the hardest part for me as someone coming back to painting after 8 years. I want to make the most of the little bit of time I have to paint. Do you have any recommendations for those of us who have very little time but also want to use that said time to make the most improvement?

Hello! I have an OBO tripod but it's actually not super sturdy - it's a very lightweight portable version and usually does the trick but I really want to invest in a better one.

Hi Sarah..today I tried applied Dorlands wax one coat over my blue background...then applied another colour yellow...I noticed that however I rubbed the yellow with water I didn't smudge with blue and wax accepted gouache as it is...it's beautiful and useful...that means I could apply a layer of gouache without messing up with underneath layer? Is this real? Please comment. I usually use Dorlands wax for final varnish of my watercolour and Gouache.

How do i get to relax my wrist while painting? What are the exercises that can be super helpful?

Hold the brush loosely. It takes a lot of conscious effort. And of course, that means tight realism could be a big challenge.

Sarah what kind of camera and shoulder clip do you use?

I have a lot of cameras... the clip is a Peak Design but I switch between different cameras. Fuji XT4, DJI Pocket 2, iphone, etc

Thanks for sharing. Yes, it’s totally not the time to work on something new at this kind of event. I struggle to paint outside and in front of people. I don’t really paint,in anything but watercolor and oils. So I love love love to watch you paint gouache and acrylics. Your art is lovely!

Thank you so much! Today went well and I’m really glad I didn’t bring the acrylics. It was too windy for a pochade box and also I was comfortable doing my watercolour/gouache so felt good

Oh and another question. I'm not trying to assume anything but prior to becoming a full time artist how did you manage you time? I'm assuming that you had another form of employment and family and friends and a relationship... how did you juggle all of that?

Yes I had a full time job and ran my photography business so I was insanely busy. Plus social events and family etc. I had phases where I didn’t draw at all then other times when I drew every day for a few minutes. Like on the bus, right before bed. While watching a movie. All those little down moments. I loved it so much that I couldn’t not draw. Best advice is to always keep a sketchbook and pen with you!

Ahhh!!! Thank you!! I thought of keeping a sketch book on hand as well. I have one hiding in my tool box at work! But maybe I should keep one in the car too...🤔 also, you live in a very lovely area. It reminds me a bit of Michigan, USA.

Yes I have thought about it. Up until recently I didn’t qualify because of my visa situation. They actually emailed me a couple years ago asking if I would apply. I’ve watched most of the episodes but I never agree with the judges 🤣

@@SarahBurnsStudio I rarely agree with them, either, Sarah!!! It would be an interesting experience for you, I think. Not being in control of the camera and timing would be interesting, but I suspect that once you were deep into the painting, you'd not notice. I hope you give it a go, anyway.
