It's my absolutely favorite moment for the character and his relationship with us. He arrives at the end of the universe to find us facing down the literal embodiment of the nihilistic rage and despair of thousands of worlds, trillions of dead souls, and he's genuinely just confused as to how we haven't kicked its ass yet.

It's okay to feel bad for Zenos. The entire story of the guy is someone who only enjoyed fighting encountering someone who made him actually feel feelings, then he spends all his life trying to create ways to fight the WoL until finally in endwalker he figures out he can help the WoL and ask. He dies as a result, but its the first time he actually feels true friendship and a sign that he may actually have been able to be a normal, compassionate human if he hadn't had the world's worst fascist upbringing
@josephgregorowicz51352 ай бұрын
I don't think it was his upbringing, but his existence as a descendent of an Unsundered. If you remember, he mentions how he, like all WoL's, saw the starshower, the destruction of Amaurot, night after night. None of this was ever explained to him by Solus or Varis. I'm pretty sure part of what Emet-Selch said when confronting Meteion at the end was a hint at this, mentioning to Venat how he thought she may have factored in this outcome. Zenos was more than a man. We knew this from the moment we first met him. But we wouldnt understand the full extent until we learned more about Solus in ShB. Honestly, Emet-Selch procreating with one of the beings he referred to as a "malformed creature" may have created a being similar to us, a sundered being with the power of a convocation member. Someone who had these abilities yet who's soul was devoid of enough aether to be able to wield Dynamis. We really were their "mirror". Our relationship in a way is similar to Azem and Emet-Selch.
@devildante9Ай бұрын
@@josephgregorowicz5135 You are forgetting that he got implanted an artificial echo with the eye thingy (one of the myriad plot points that was dully abandoned, god stormblood is so bad), he got pseudo ascian powers after that (being able to displace his soul and put it into other bodies and such). I imagine this is the reason he could see that stuff, but I agree that it is in part because he is Emet descendant.

So glad to go on this journey with you! Interesting theory about the teleporter. Where does it come from? If you talk to Urianger at Revenant's Toll, he offers his thoughts: "I understand that, following thy clash with Zenos, the teleportation device thou had discarded fell to thee from on high. To return to thee in such a manner... I did confer with Wilfsunn and Bloewyda, yet they insist the device was possessed of no such capability. 'Twas a miracle befitting the nature of that place, where emotion becometh tangible reality. Whence, then, arose this timely wonder? Thine ardent wish...or another's fervent prayer?" Our best friend's dying prayer was to send us home. 😭😭

Zenos has multiple moments in his monologues where I felt like he was talking directly to me. His final monologue truly made me realize why I can sometimes feel so disconnected with people and the world. While my in-game character found fulfillment, I am still trying to find what I want from life and to find my own fulfillment.

What they managed to do with the SHB-EW arc to tie everything together was nothing short of a masterpiece. This is why I keep coming back to watch these reactions and sob every time. It's more than just a game, right? It's an experience, it's something that will stick with you, something that helps us understand and accept the impermanence of life and thus the importance of sharing stories, thoughts, feelings, to keep hope alive even in the face of despair. Sarah could have taken many more years to finally upload this and I still would've clicked on it right when I saw it. They guided the player through the game with such a huge effort in writing, music, scene direction, showed such passion in their work. The scene with Moenbryda's parents will always break me. Sometimes when I see Meteion tell the Scions to silence their song of oblivion, to replace their despair with hope, I wonder if those words weren't coming directly from the devs themselves, hoping for a better world, feeling a bit cynical but knowing that as long as we spread hope and compassion, and not despair, that a better tomorrow is possible. Knowing that it was only possible together, with the people you met along the way, or gamers who will never meet but all shared in this experience that touched us, that gave us a glimpse of hope when maybe some of us needed it the most.

I had friend in discord tell me to read it. I walked away from my PC. I ate cereal, laid on my bed and stared at my ceiling for hours comprehending the sense of loss. Even though I knew they'd come back cause DT trailers, I let the moment wash over me as if there was no confirmation. The emotional impact was worth it. when I left the Elpis cutscene my 4 friends and mentors were waiting for me to select them for the dungeon and I just popped like a dead lightbulb. Can you imagine if they let us choose if our PC died there after Zenos? With an option to have a new character (same gear, levels, etc.) start out the next story. Or maybe the npc's spend the story bringing us back somehow. Personally, when I played this back in the day, I was tired on a deeper level. I understood that pull to just slip away. I felt it would have been fitting for my PC in a way. Starting a new character would help to resolve the narrative issue of where do you go with a story after beating something as big as the avatar of despair all. I would to thank you for posting this. Its been a couple years since I've played through this. The last year hasn't been kind and that tiredness has returned. This was a reminder not to give in to despair. The events of this past year will not end my journey.

So first off you ought to record a reaction to a few specific meme videos, most notably Bunny Zenos. Secondly, you might enjoy watching other people play through -- if only to connect the dots you didn't know enough to connect the first time through. My favorite, perhaps, of "holy crap that DID happen I didn't even think about it much", is after defeating Zodiark and returning to the lunar surface. It's a moment that's sufficiently out of place that I completely and utterly forgot about it until a rewatch. Because right there on the moon, before even meeting the loporrits, with nobody else around, there's a creepy voice: "Ah... At last...". And if you go back and watch it, you will now recognize that voice

Zenos is a great character, thats been his sole purpose and his obsession with you. As he was brought up by his horrible garlean family, he has no idea how to express himself to you other than with combat. To him that was the only way he could express himself. He also knew he could not stay, and so he gives his final farewell in a last challenge, but knowing you could just leave. No force, no emergency. And you know you can't let him live after all he's done. Also hes likely the one who saves you at the end and returns you to your friends. A fitting farewell for such a divisive character.
