If you want to try it, there is a free trial that''s beyond generous. You can play up until level 70. You get access to the base game A Realm Reborn, as well as the next two expansions Heavensward and Stormblood. There's no restrictions on play time so you can technically stay Free Trial forever, but you don't get access to certain social aspects like Guilds, Housing, and DMs, and your money is capped. I'd say give it a whirl, imo the subscription is worth it considering the quality of the MMO.

To answer the question on what is happening to the guy in the first trailer, its called the 'Echo' A Realm Reborn explains it as you play it (also those cards are basically quests). As for the second Trailer, This played right before they shut down the servers to Final Fantasy XIV 1.0 for good, and was replayed with extended video when Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn was released. Also thats the Second Moon Dalamud where Bahamut was sealed, it fell in the last days of Final Fantasy XIV (aka 1.0) and basically destroyed everything, A Realm Reborn is 5 years after the fact, that where if you have a 1.0 player (aka have a 1.0 account), you are teleported 5 years into the future. (which is what happened to the party that you follow in the trailer).

FF14 fan info dump incoming! I will say, us FF14 enjoyers LOVE to watch new players react to our game. If you livestream your blind playthrough, you will more than likely not get spoiled on the story. Our community is very protective of our new players, called Sprouts (due to your little green icon you get). Expect a drop off once you hit end game though, we're just here to watch emotional damage. If you say you are new to a dungeon in chat, people will help you. Some veterans may even aggressively adopt you. Cross-server play is region-based. On NA, we can visit any server that isn't overpopulated (Mostly Crystal and Aether are overpopulated. Crystal is the roleplayer server cluster, and Aether is the 'end game' cluster of servers. So any of your current followers who play can join up with you more than likely and do some content. The platforms available for play are: PlayStation5, PlayStation4, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Mac, Steam. However, you have to have a 'key' for each one. So if you want to play on PS and PC, you have to buy the entire game license again. Steam is also a seperate login server, so if anything happens to Steam you cannot log in. You do not have to buy every expansion separately if you decide to start playing. Free Trial includes Heavensward and Stormblood, but you do not have to buy any expansion other than Dawntrail to unlock the rest! Buying the game sucks. The store sucks. Honestly it's a miracle they're still using some weird 90s looking website and getting money from us. The community is policed heavily. While it's not free of toxic players, being openly toxic is a reportable offense and can get your account actioned, so people mostly keep their shit to themselves or out of game channels. The GMs are real people and they're very much on top of their game. (Example: I lost my authenticator token. The website says to allow up to a week to get my account's access token removed. It was removed in 2 hours.) When we're not actively in the peak of a new expansion you can afk permanently and not get logged out. There is currently an AFK timer so you will get kicked out. But it'll go away in a bit. Housing is a bitch to get into. You have to win a lottery for a house. Currently, for NA players the best chance to get a house is on Dynamis, which is the newest server cluster. Except Seraph, that place is pretty full. You have to go into your house every 45 days to keep it as well, so maintaining a sub at least every other month is needed if you want to keep your house and take a break. This doesn't mean you're locked out of decorating entirely. Many guilds (called Free Companies) have a housing plot. You can buy a room in that house and decorate it. You can also buy an apartment in the housing wards if you find one available. Your apartment is permanent, unlike having a house or being in a guild that might remove you for being inactive. You cannot lose your apartment due to taking a break. Fashion is VERY important to us. Our fashion ranges from modern to techno to high fantasy. Here's a quick peek at one website dedicated to fashion: ffxiv.eorzeacollection.com/glamours/loved I hope I helped! Come check out our game!

The reason MMOs are subscription based games is because they are always being updated with new content, events, balances, changes to classes, etc. So yea, if your only in to play the main story, maybe just do that and stop your sub after. But if you play a lot and explore all the content it has to give, its well worth the monthly sub.

And most importantly no mtx other than mounts and emotes. As for glam, the best stuff is obtained in game 👍

Oh also why there is a monthly sub is because of servers. It's an online game where other people are running around too, and servers are HELLA expensive to maintain.
@pipeisreal3 ай бұрын
XIV's monthly subscription really helps it a lot in the end as there is literally nothing gated behind a microtransaction or a premium or time gated currency. everything is available to you so long as you have access to the game (and a little time to sink into unlocking and progressing said content). plus XIV also earns SE a *lot* of money which in turn allows them to continue funding the game and their other projects

The main character (affectionately known in the community as "John Final Fantasy") shows off Archer > Warrior > Dragoon > Monk/Samurai > Dark Knight > Paladin > Viper (dual swords). The next to last trailer was the final for the first arc of the game, each section is a remix of the music of the previous expansions (sidenote: these trailers only show three of the continents of the world). The last trailer begins a new arc in the story and introduces a 4th continent, revealed the new jobs to the game (Viper and Pictomancer), and a new race (the female lioness at the end).

The first two trailers are part of what was the original FFXIV or 1.0/Legacy as we call it in the community. The second was part part of the cinematics for when the original servers shut down, though the other half to the lore from the second cinematic can be seen during a set of early raids in ARR. The legacy ran from September 2010- November 2012 under Hiromichi Tanaka. What's awesome is the lore of the first game became a part of the lore and history of the reboot. The reboot (ARR) takes place after Bahamut 'destroyed the realm'... its set in the fantasy region of Eorzea, five years after the devastating Seventh Umbral Calamity which was how the original version was closed down with great flair... In the Calamity, the elder primal Bahamut escaped from his prison, an ancient space station called Dalamud, unleashing an apocalypse across Eorzea. Through temporal magic, the player character of the original version escaped, reappearing at the start of A Realm Reborn. The character you see as the MC in the cutscenes like these in 'Meteor', whom is the stand-in for your character. Then in August 2013 it returned as A Realm Reborn under the direction of Naoki Yoshida (aka Yoshi P among the community) and much of the music is done by Masayoshi Soken (also heads the band The Primals, who do much of the rock themes for the game) and and some earlier pieces by Nobuo Uematsu (who did much of the stuff for the original game). Yoshi P pretty much turned the game around and has turned it into the game we come to know today. There's also several reoccurring events each year as well as a few special crossover events that come back aroundonce or twice, some only once. They do an seasonal (every year) events like Heavensturn (New Years), Valentione's Day (Valentine's), Little Ladies' Day (Hinamatsuri or Girl's Day in Japan/Asian cultures), Hatching-tide (Easter), The Make It Rain Campaign (A Special Event for the Game's Gold Saucer which is basically like a casino), Moonfire Faire (Bon/Festival of Spirits in Japan/Asian cultures), The Rising (ARR anniversary), All Saints' Wake (Halloween), and Starlight Celebration (Christmas). They have also done limited crossover events with FFXI, FFXII/Tactics, FFXIII, FFXV and the new FFXVI, as well as Dragon Quest, Yo-kai Watch, GARO, Monster Hunter World, Nier: Automata, Fall Guys (via the Gold Saucer) to name a few. Some have done rereuns, and some have only happened once. As many said, the game offers a pretty decent Free Trial for an MMO, but I can tell you as a player for nearly 5 years its defiantly worth trying and getting sucked into the series and lore. Yes the first part, ARR can be a long slog and feel slow, but know that the game is all about the slow burn and the storytelling, but worth to go through. A Realm reborn through Endwalker was literally a 10 year long arc of story that finished the arc known as the Hydaelyn/Zodiark arc and the most recent expansion, Dawntrail is basically the opening to the new journey after our journey of saving the realm more then once. It's sort of a shift of our character to back to the roots of being an 'adventurer', even though we are also the Warrior of Light, and for us, obviously just being a normal adventurer and sell sword is not gonna happen...Cause trouble or world changing events in the realm always seems to find us or suck us into it's machinations...XD

I'm only 20m in to this video and I love it. You probably have more comments down here explaining things, but yeah- that first vid, the original 1.0 opener. The second, with the moon crashing down during a war and exploding into another huge dragon- the end of 1.0, and the end of the world. The third, the launch of 2.0, A Realm Reborn- the time after the end, the survivors, and why the land's geography looks that way. It all got hit with the meteors and the shards of the moon and the dragon, and those are the scars.
@BananaMellor3 ай бұрын
While most of the first trailer (the 1.0 trailer) was essentially a daydream or premonition, that battle in the sky between dragons and manmade airships did actually happen many years before the start of the currently playable FF14 (ARR / 2.0). The explosion we see when the flagship hit the lake completely wrecked the area around the lake and turned it into a twisted wasteland. It's also still littered with debris from all the airships that fell to the ground during the fight. And you can still see the flagship with the serpentine dragon's corpse wrapped around it.
@BananaMellor3 ай бұрын
With the ARR trailer, one thing to know is that there were 5 years between the Calamity (aka the battle where the dragon ravaged the continent) and when we see people enjoying life once again. It's called A Realm Reborn for a reason, as people are only now getting back to a state of normalcy. Other people will probably have mentioned that it coincided with the decision to kill the 1.0 servers and do a timeskip when they started 2.0. And this is represented with the player characters being teleported into the future 5 years. Edit: there's another version of this cinematic that instead focuses on what happens with the old man and the dragon. It can be looked up but it's actually part of a raid series where you as the player try to discover the truth behind the end of the calamity and what we didn't see after being teleported away. What actually happened with the old man and the dragon.
@BananaMellor3 ай бұрын
I don't want to say too much about the dragons, but they're not just all inherently evil. They're intelligent and can communicate. When they choose to fight, they have their reasons whether you agree with them or not. And having a common cause to fight on the same side isn't out of the question.

The game's player characters have an ability called the echo, which in the first version of the game could show them the past or the future like they were there. That's what was happening in the first trailer.

Every trailer up until the 2nd to last is one story that contains smaller, connected stories. The last trailer is basically a reset. We've saved the universe, now its time to relax and go on vacation. We travel not as the Hero who saved the world, but as a simple guy looking for his or her next adventure. No fate of the world to worry about, no big villain threatening to take over the world. Also, the location is based on the Americas, hence the tacos. Big capitol city is located in what's basically central America.

As you can imagine the trailers are so much more meaningful when you know the story line and the characters. The free trial is very robust so giving it a shot is highly recommended. It's not all about the main story either, far from it, you can put on your most glamorous outfit and go to a club or cafe that are player made for a while! My character is even married for almost 3 years now, with over 50 players attending our wedding! No game makes lasting memories like FFXIV.

You mentioned they keep changing jobs and stuff. In 14 you can be at a job or class as it’s called on one character. You don’t have to level up several characters or whatever. Classes have the XP and you level them up separately, but you can do them all at one player and switch. Not during combat, but you’re not locked to one class per character

You guys that say you have to struggle through ARR are trying to play it like it's any other MMO. Final Fantasy is an RPG first and MMO afterwards. You get to play with other people in dungeons and encounters throughout the story, but as soon as it's over you're back into main character mode RPG storyline. If ever there was an honest comment about the "base game" that would be it. JoCat even said the same thing. He's got a video of it describing it pretty close to that. I'd say it's almost a must watch. It's kind of long, but worth it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX2wYWuMp6qmbM0

I love the way they slip the Square Enix logo into the cinematics. You can see it on the statue as it slowly pans up the stone early on in the Stormblood one, but it's difficult to see on your first watch through because you never see the full Square Enix at once, and it's read sideways.

Would telling you that all the armor the WoL (the main guy) wears in these cinematics is infact available in game help you decide to play? they're all Artifact Armor, which is basically like, armor you get for reaching the max level of an expac. Another thing is that for most of the trailers, the WoL's job isn't actually from the expac in question, its more of a thematic job, like for Heavensward, Dragoon was a base game job, but in The Lore its from Ishgard, the city you saw him at, and has its origins as an elite cadre of dragon slayers. Or Stormblood, while Samurai is a new STB job, the other one is Monk which is also a base game job, but once again, in lore is from Ala Mhigo, which is where that giant stone statue is, and where half the expac takes place. The devs just really like being able to flex their rich lore. EDIT: gotta say, if you stream playing it/ do videos about your progress, you WILL get a bunch of people who come to watch you experience the story, 14 fans love to be emotional vampires, me included.

This missiles striking the dragon in Heavensward weren't missiles. They were people. You were watching dragoons slam into the dragon with a spear and wrenching it inside its scales to bring it down. Their specialty is invoking an artform of combat that allows them to project themselves to slam into enemies, usually in the form of jumping on them for massive kinetic strikes. Also, yes, armor and clothing looks that clean. I would argue that the fits in the trailers are mid.

The cinematic trailers for FFXIV are something great to look forwards to every new expansion. Square-Enix makes them mostly to showcase some of the new locations you'll see, a bit of the adventure to come and new jobs/races. Like Stormblood introduced the Samurai and Shadowbringers the Gunbreaker and Dancer, as well as the Viera race. Unfortunately... By the time you get to the Shadowbringers trailer you are more or less expected to have some foreknowledge of the characters, names and views. You have no idea who 'Minfillia' is. You have no idea what the impact of the Crystal Tower is or why those blue and red teens are so important... Still great trailers... But the hype becomes a little more for the people already playing rather than get new people hooked.
@DoktorWieg3 ай бұрын
To add a bit of context to the trailers : The first one is from FFXIV 1.0. The 'cards' were part of the quest system called "Leves" where you'd pick them at NPCs then activate them to undergo the quest. The "main" character is the stand in for your own character. Without going too deep into it, 1.0 had a very different gameplay than 2.0 onward with 'classes' allowing to learn skills from one another then slot them while playing another. So you could level up a conjurer and learn healing skills then switch to gladiator and while the gladiator had its own abilities, you could slot in some of the skills you learned as a conjurer, ending with a gladiator able to cast healing magic for example. This cross-class skill system carried on to 2.0 and 3.0 before it was replaced with role actions. The main character (referred to as the "Warrior of Light") in this trailer showing the "archer" class. The second trailer is interesting as since FFXIV 1.0 did so badly, the new director of the dev team decided they needed to trash this version and rebuild another one entirely. So for months, their team worked on both the FFXIV 1.0 version and 2.0 at the same time in preparation for the switch. While the latter wasn't known to the public, ingame, signs were showing of something big coming, a red "star" growing larger in the sky. On the final days before the servers were shut down, the song you hear in the trailer could be heard ingame in the distance with the red star turning out to be Dalamud, one of the two moons the world has, coming down. In those days, GMs would spawn high level enemies near cities and the surroundings, simulating a moment of crisis. But players actually were doing a pretty good job pushing them back. Some legendary memes came out of it too (like the "Great Gobbue Wall") and it lasted until the very last moment... when the screen went to black and that trailer played INGAME. It would show the end of an era, the destruction that ensued and "adventurers" (players) getting wisked away by the old man. When the trailer ended, everyone was kicked out and the servers brought down. In this trailer, the main character is using the Warrior "job" (which is an advanced version of a base class, the Marauder). Something to note at this point is that the player characters can switch class/job freely when outside of combat and instanced content. This means a single PC can level up all jobs to maximum level along with all crafting and gathering classes. This means that alts are mostly if you want a visually different character to play as since you can pretty much experience and do all content with all playstyles on a single character. This is canon ingame as the player having "Soul Crystals" that let them attune to a given job as well as a "gear set" system that let them swap instantly (which is what you saw happen in Shadowbringers). The third trailer for Heavensward shows the WoL as a Warrior arriving in a city at war with dragons and the individuals wielding spears and exotic armor are called "Dragoons". They're essentially dragon slayers who specialize in aerial combat through the use of jumping abilities. This job is one of the trademark jobs from the series and while their origins and abilities usually differ per game, the jumping aspect always remains. They go from being dragon slayers to actually dragon knights who get along with dragons and often sport abilities that are similar to dragons depending on their respective lore. This expansion also introduced the Au Ra as a new playable race (think cross between human and lizard / dragon looking people) The fourth trailer, Stormblood, happens during a war with a nation called Garlemard which are noted in lore to be unable to use magic. As such, they instead use high technology and war machina (called Magitek) to compensate and use magic like abilities... at that point, they are also very nationalistic in that they view any other races besides "garleans" as inferiors or "savages". The setting is then to fight two wars on two fronts to retake land and liberate people. In this trailer, both characters (the WoL and the woman) on the statue's hand are Monks (aka martial artists) and their signature trait is that they actually have the shortest GCD in the game in term of queuing abilities along with a gap closer called "Thunderclap" which is pretty much what you see the both of them pull off. Later on, you of course see the Samurai in action which was one of the new jobs introduced with Stormblood (the other being the Red Mage) and one of the new settings for the xpac. The fifth trailer (Shadowbringers) shows the WoL struggling against that angelic creature and as you can see, switching between the jobs from the previous trailers along with, at the end, changing to the Dark Knight job. While not a job introduced in Shadowbringers, it is thematically relevant to the story (somewhat) and why it is showcased. In order however, you can see both a Black Mage (the white haired catgirl, or miqo'te), an Astrologian (the tall elven-looking character with the cards), the Gunbreaker (the human-looking character with the gunblade fighting that giant white lion, a new jobs for the expac) and the Dancer. The Dancer actually showcases both the new job for this expac and the new race, the Viera as well as the Hrothgars. At first, the Viera only had females and Hrothgars males but this would change later on. The sixth trailer (Endwalker) shows the WoL as a Paladin; while not a new job (it was back in 1.0 in fact), again it is somewhat thematically relevant and a throwback to an older game. You'd then see a Red Mage in action (the red girl with the crystal rapier) and the Sage (the one in blue with the Nuliths, aka floating wands), the latter which was a new job for Endwalker. Further on, you'd see the man on the throne with a scythe, showcasing the Reaper job, the other new job for the expansion. This is also the expansion where male Viera were added. The final trailer (Dawntrail) now has the WoL as a Viper, a dual-wielding job that uses "Twinfangs" blades as their weapon which can be combined in a double sword, a new job for DT. You'd also have a peek at the Pictomancer through the Lalafell (childlike character) using a paintbrush and palette, also a new jobs. By the end, you also see the reveal of the female Hrothgars. And if there are three important pillars about FFXIV, they are "Music", "Storytelling" and "Community". Yes, those armors look as good ingame as they do in the trailers and a lot of people's ingame fun is to come up with the most original or coolest "glams" they can. A lot of gear can be dyed and somehow made to work together. And if you ever want to give it a shot, the trial goes from Lv.1 to Lv.70, with all of A Realm Reborn, Heavensward and Stormblood playable. Only restrictions are that you cannot use classes and jobs from those expacs (though you have 10 to start with) and the usual stuff like limited gil (currency) and some features disabled. Though since there's plenty of people who played all the way to Stormblood with trial accounts, it's safe to say they aren't too heavy restrictions.

Bit of background. In the game you are known as the Warrior of Light, and you are blessed with an ability called the Echo, which allows you to see a persons past and present. The first trailer you watched is for the original 1.0 version of the game, which frankly flopped hard. In that trailer, the scene where the human looking guy, who is the trailer representation of your character, gets teleported into those scenes of battle is actually the character witnessing a vision with the Echo. In 1.0 the Echo also had some weirder abilities, like being able to take items out of memories, but since then those more iffy capabilities have been quietly retconned. The second trailer is a trailer shown when Square Enix shut down 1.0's servers for the last time, and is essentially a hard reset for the setting. Everything after this cutscene takes place five years after what is known as the Seventh Umbral Calamity in the 2.0 version of the game, titled A Realm Reborn. All of the robots and technology are creations of the Garlean Empire, the major antagonists of much of the game and its expansions. They're a militaristic expansionist empire hellbent on bringing everyone else under their heel in order to prevent Primals, or Eikons as they call them, from being summoned by essentially squashing out religion. This is because Eikons if left summoned will slowly drain the land of aether, killing all life around them until there's nothing but a wasteland. Pureblood Garleans, identified by their taller physique and third eye (looks more like an organic gem tbh), are incapable of channeling aether (the FF version of Magicka) and instead use technology fueled by Ceruleum, which is kinda like a Fantasy version of Oil. Pretty sure its kinda like liquid aether. As for the races, there's the hyur, elezen, lalafell, miqo'te, roegadyn, au ra, viera and hrothgar. Hyur's are the basic human equivalent and are split into the Midlanders and the Highlanders. Highlanders are tall and strong and mostly originate from Ala Mhigo, a city-state recently occupied by the Garlean Empire. Midlanders are more spread out and are shorter and less muscular than Highlanders. Elezen are the resident elf-like race, and are split into the Wildwood and Duskwight. Wildwoods are kinda like a mix between Wood Elves and High Elves from ESO, without the cannibalism and... well they are racist sometimes. Duskwights are darker skinned subterranean versions, closer to Dark Elves. They're often discriminated against by Wildwood Elezen and usually turn to a life of banditry. Lalafell are the child-like race you saw do the shield spell in the first trailer. They're kinda like Gnomes in WoW, but about 50% less puntable. They're split into the Plainsfolk and the Dunesfolk. Literal only difference between the two are the eyes, Plainsfolk have normal looking eyes while Dunesfolk have these wierd eyes that don't really have pupils. This is due to a protective film they developed to help them travel the deserts. Important thing to note, is that even though Lalafells LOOK young, the ones you see in the trailers (like the royal one that got poisoned and the one with the staff) are all grown adults. They just look young. Yes, this is often played for laughs Miqo'te are the cat-people and are split into the Seekers of the Sun and the Keepers of the Moon. Seekers of the Sun have slit-like eyes while Keepers of the Moon have rounded eyes and little fangs. Until A Realm Reborn, male Miqo'tes weren't actually a thing. So thats fun. Roegadyn are the tall green race you saw. They're kinda like the Orc Equivalent, and are split into the Sea Wolves and the Hellsguard. Sea Wolves are the green ones and are nautical in nature, and the Hellsguard have more reddish skin tones and are mountaneous. Until ARR, female Roegadyn didn't exist. Au Ra is a superficially reptilian race with horns, scales and tails. They're divided into the Raen and Xaela clans. I genuinely don't know the difference between the two groups besides the fact that one has white scales, and the other has dark scales. Viera are bunny girls. And more recently, bunny boys. They're split into the Rava and Veena clans, and are differentiated by different skin tones. Viera are extremely long-lived and have a matriarchal society where the men are delegated to roaming the outskirts of the forests they inhabit to protect the villages from outside forces, while the women act as leaders and raise the children, with men only returning occasionally to have children and take any of-age boys with them. Finally we have the Hrothgar, a previously all-male races that recently had females added in Dawntrail. They're separated into the Helions and The Lost, thought these are more social groups instead of any indication of geographical origin, as in the lore there have been NPCs who are listed as Helions in their character code for appearance reasons, but refer to themselves as The Lost.

15:11 That dragon's signature magic is called Flare. Flare has a unique scaling among magic. Usually in Final Fantasy, magics of different strengths in the same element are tiered with names like Fire, Fira, Firaga, Firaza (for Fire, obviously), Blizzard, Blizzara, Blizzaga, Blizzaza (for Blizzard, FInal Fantasy's Ice magic), or alternately Fire/Blizzard 1/2/3/4. Flare on the other hand, is tiered with the names Flare, Megaflare, Gigaflare, Teraflare, etc. Usually higher level Flare spells are just more powerful, wider AoE, and such, but there the dragon is using Teraflare in the form of countless bolts of the Flare spell. Flare is nuclear magic, so each of those little bolts of light is like a mininuke.

I'm right there with you on the subscription cost. Especially now that we're 20 years after World of Warcraft. With FF14, though, I feel like the cost is justified, just based on how much content they give you with each update. If you wanted to you could play for free up until the end of Stormblood which is the second expansion, and then start paying the subscription then. And if you wanted to you could do what I do and just get a 6-month sub, so effectively you can just blast through the main story of all the expansions and not worry about month to monthing it. The producer of FF14 has said on several occasions that he would rather people stop paying and go play something else rather than feel burned out and keep paying for the game. I've definitely done this over the last 11 years, and it's a healthy design goal to avoid FOMO. You should be able to get through the main story and most of narrative the side content (raids/trials) within the first 6 months, but if you wanted to take your time or do more, by all means feel free.
