4:00 The 'pause' in the brakes might be because of regen breaking. The first 10-15% of the brake pedal might only be doing regen before the actual physical brakes kick in. It takes a bit getting used to, but it works out. Plus, if you change your driving habits, you end up using the regen for most of the braking power, and your pads last way longer.

They, however, are manual transmissions that you cannot get in the new ones. The six-speed in the HRV has much better gears and is more fun to drive. In Atkinson cycle engines (more so than others) the expansion ratio as opposed to compression should be stated. It is still the ratio of combustion chamber volume to displacement, but as the charge is almost never "compressed" to the listed ratio, it is a more useful number. In ALL 4 cycle engines, it is the expansion ratio that creates the power (the power stroke), all other strokes are parasitic.

This Civic is pretty tempting. I say that as someone driving a ‘12 Civic sedan that was originally thinking of getting something bigger for my next car. Would love a wagon. Honda needs to give us a sporty Accord hybrid wagon. Although I know that will never happen…

It’s nuts how big “compact” cars are today. I’m 54 and have been driving since the late 1980s. Honda Civics and Accords were much more compact and reasonably sized. My 1999 Accord was about as big as I’d like Hondas to get. The Gen 1 Civic is the perfect fiat 500 or Mini alternative today.

Don’t need driveshaft nowadays to have AWD, Toyota uses electric motor on the rear of their Hybrid.
@bradkendall531113 күн бұрын
My thoughts exactly. No need for a dinosaur era mechanical diff. Tons of room for an electric motor and would be cheaper and easier. Increase the battery size a bit and away you go.

But a real rear motor is needed, not the puny one Toyota is using just to be able to put the AWD badge on their vehicles.
@billisdewillis512 күн бұрын
The reason Honda uses a traditional mechanical split is so that you can actually power the rear wheels with reasonable amount of power back there and at reasonable speeds. The Corolla has some 40hp motor that drives the rear wheel to only about 15mph iirc.

Folks like crossovers cause of the ease of getting in and out of them. It’s not easy getting in and out of modern sedans, especially if you have back issues, etc. And with the low profile tires on a lot of sedans when you have bumps or dips I see a lot of sedans almost have to come to a stop to negotiate them.

Wife and I are in our low 40s and will likely never own another sedan due to it just being easier. It's always been a better financial move for the young to buy used, let someone else take that upfront depreciation. The trend of new car buyers being older and wealthier than the average has been around for a long time now. It's also too expensive for the manufacturer to sell cheap small cars here in the US, that's why they're all getting discontinued here but still sold everywhere else (even in the EU where regulation is rampant).

I’m glad someone else recognizes that! Companies call it “h-point” where the hip is located in a car. They’re at the perfect height in crossovers for people to easily sit down into

@maxotterland13 күн бұрын
Once you wrap your brain around hybrid drive you'll understand that it's much more elegant and simple than an old school automatic. Most of the gearing is done with magnetism. The engine is pulling on the drive motors with magnetism to add torque. No physical connection to the wheels. Seems crazy at first but it's so smart. Toyota figured out Synergy drivetrains twenty-five years ago. It's neat stuff.

That’s one of the more infuriating things that people have drummed up about hybrids recently. “You have to take replacing the battery in account”. I have a friend that has a 2006 Prius and with the original battery pack and it still has 80% battery life on it. Plus you can get the battery packs rebuilt. But people act like they have to replace them in 5-7 years 🙄.

100% direct-injection ICE engine, so carbon deposit clogging nightmare at some point no matter what top tier fuel with detergents that you use. They need to design an engine like Toyota that pairs both direct & port injection together.
@paulm74914 күн бұрын
Or include frequent service intervals for cleaning. Maybe even incorporate a periodic water injection process in a similar way that many commercial diesel engines have to go through exhaust re-generation to clean soot build-up. The current practice of not informing buyers about the inevitable performance degradation that comes with direct-injection-only engines is seriously negligent.

In my city, we were the people - according to the salesman- to snatch up the last Honda Fit they had, and after they never ordered any new ones. The car had 5 mile on it and sitting under a tree for months, so when we bought it, we got a discount because of it, also they had to clean off some tree saps from the roof. This was in 2020, covid was going around, and being like the only customer there, we took the car (2020 Honda Fit EX) home for $18k. LOL, I just saw the same one with 25K miles and sells for $17.5K.

You missed one VERY important feature. It's right behind the parking brake button. It's called "brake hold". What it does is when you turn it on it will hold the brakes on when you've come to a stop. You can literally take your for off the brake pedal and the car will stay stationary and then when you should the gas it let's off the brake. They have it in many models. I have it in my Accord. It is amazing. I have nerve damage in my right hip. The simple act of moving my right foot from gas to brake can be somewhat painful. This is very helpful. After I've come to a stop I can move my foot back to a less painful position.

Yup. We can thank the EPA and other overbearing government for making cars way too complex, too expensive, and unreliable. In the pursuit of 100% safety and zero % pollution, complexity and cost go up exponentially. Plus it’s so expensive to maintain modern cars that poorer people hang onto their old beater cars even longer and these pollute more. By the mid-1990’s, vehicles seemed to reach the happy medium between efficiency, safety, lack of pollution, affordability, and reliability. Ever since, they’ve become overly complex and expensive for ever diminishing returns. Mankind should quit trying to make cars more “perfect” and focus on lower hanging fruit, such as better recycling of scrap materials, better handling of trash and garbage, more efficient power generation, better stewardship of lakes, rivers, dams, and water, etc.
