I remember when the smaller Mazda cars (same goes for Civic) were econoboxes. Despite the hot hatch shortcomings, the engineering in the car is great. Except for rear suspension. All cars need independent suspension.
@timgt59 ай бұрын
The bar has changed for this cars. When I was growing up in the 1980s a compact car meant cheap to buy, cheap to feed, cheap to insure. It also meant the seats were milk crates with fabric stretched over them, AC that was an asthmatic blowing through a straw if the car had it, a radio that sounded like an Alexa fizzing out at the bottom of a well, playground quality interiors, and a five line feature list and zero to sixty that was better measured by an appointment calendar, than a stopwatch. Hit something at more than 20 mph and you were not walking away. In the 1990s makers decided to stop punishing the buyers of these cars and started making them bigger and nicer. Now we have the Mazda 3 turbo which can hit 60 in just over 6 seconds, is awash in soft materials, is very quiet, comes with a 12 sp sound system and a 5 star safety rating. It and its peers have become respectable small family cars with the current Civic having a larger interior than the Accord did in the 2000s and so on.

@movia12345 ай бұрын
@@timgt5 For sure. There are a couple new cars that stay true to the econobox idea like the Nissan Versa or Mitsubishi Mirage G4. The G4 gets some really bad reviews from auto press, but some owners like the simplicity. It's still much better and safer than a early to mid 1990s economy car.

Two mentions: (1) Mazda3 and CX-30 have the Dynamic Pressure Turbo with CX-50 being the only model with twin-scroll. (2) The fake engine sound is coming from the speakers (present only on turbo models) and can be defeated only by unpinning a wire from the Amp (which is under passenger's seat); it feels like is piped in because the front woofers in Mazda3 and CX-30 are not in the doors but in the front cowl for better bass response (you can see them if you look down under the dash).

I even prefer the Mazda control module in the 3 over the CX 5. Averaging 30 miles per gallon in mixed use driving. Drove 15 hours in the 3 and when I arrived at my destination, I was not fatigued. That is a great compliment to Mazda. I drive over 50,000 miles a year in multiple vehicles and the Mazda is by far the most comfortable vehicle I have been in. The hatchback does have a enormousblinds spot. I just use the safety suite and the warning lights on the passenger mirror to assist. Interior is equal or better than the Audi A3. While expensive, it is a great car.

I don't know what is going on but quick moves too avoid Maryland drivers at speeds in excess of the speed limit (because who drives that around here) seem to really freak the car out. It's just a really off platform. I wanted to like it because it looks SO GREAT.

I do have to correct Sarah on something. The engine sound under load is actually fake. It is played through the speakers even though it might not seem like it. This fact has been confirmed in several ways. First, people have removed the fuse to the sound system and that nice engine sound disappears. Secondly, someone figured out a way to disable the fake engine sound by de-pinning one of the pins on a connector that controls the engine sound. And lastly, Mazda admits that the engine growl is fake. Mazda calls the fake engine sound the "Engine Harmonics Enhancer". It is a pleasant sound, but I much prefer the engine to sound as it really does, and I'm going to be disabling it on my turbo.
