I seriously hope you're in/working towards a fantastic job in engineering, kinesiology or something physics-related because your comprehension of fundamentals is awe-inspiring, truly. If videos like this existed back when I got my first board; I probably wouldn't have given up so quickly. The how and why are so important and it's best to instill good habits from the beginning so you don't have to reset muscle memory later like with anything. I know this video is old but keep making these!

Hi Sarah! I've always wanted to try skateboarding but my mom never got me one as we're from India and we don't have any skatepark (oh don't even think about crusing in the street :( you how it is haha) or many other skaters in our state. But two weeks ago after turning 20 I decided to buy myself a board and stared practicing at an even surface in an apartment garage all by myself watching KZbin tutorials. I have to admit it's one of the best things ever. Gradual progression is more addictive than anything else. I mainly watch your channel because of your simple breakdowns of skate tricks. Seriously keep it up girl! You really help a lot. I can't stress that enough. Now on day 10 i can push(not properly though) but i am kinda comfortable with my board, i can kickturn, ground flip, get over cracks and do tiny ollies (like literally you can't even see the board pop). Oh and i can't rotate the board 180 when trying shuv its, i mean i do keep my stance the way you explained but the wheels don't get off the ground, they kinda drag and make screeching sounds. Any tip would be helpful. Sorry for the long comment hehe.
@SarahParkMatott2 жыл бұрын
No problem, that's amazing! Welcome to skateboarding, Harsha! And I'm glad my channel has been so helpful. To get the wheels to come off the ground, you probably need to push "down" a little more. Not just straight back. That balance of down and back helps get the wheels up. It also helps if you start a little heavy on both feet--put pressure down into the board and then jump up and push back to release that pressure. This is actually a concept I am going to add to a future video! It's hard to explain without the visual! But you got it. It takes months of practice to start to get anyway 💪

This is the best tutorial I've seen on shuv its! My shuv its are not 100% consistent yet, but one thing that has helped me go from about 5% makes to about 50% makes, is using my front foot to kick the board just a bit as well. This not only makes the spin be faster which helps me not have to jump as high in order to give time for the board to spin, but it also helps me a lot in controlling where the axis for spin is. If I kick with my front foot, it forces the board to spin somewhere in the middle of both feet and I avoid having it spin on the back wheels or shoot forward. I think Sarah is doing this too, you can see her front foot kick forward slightly on the shuv its at the end of the video, and I do believe she mentions this motion in other vids. Oh, I also noticed this helps keep my front foot closer to the board, and that makes it easier because I can focus more on my back foot's landing since my front foot is almost certainly going to land on the board already. I also try to lift my front foot a tenth of a second before my right foot as that makes the kick and rotation easier for me, it kinda takes care of the pushing down of my back foot as the board is already in that position when I do this and then the flick is smoother when I get this right, it also pushes the board up into my front foot making easier to kick it forward. Sorry for the long comment, but hopefully it helps someone someday 😅
@roachcuca3190 Жыл бұрын
You are developing a bad habit that way. Think of this trick as passing the tail to your front foot with a spring/pressure like feel. It's all about timing the pressure you exert between the tail and the middle of yiur deck. With shuvits, you begin the scoop putting pressure on the tail while your front foot is still on, wich accumulates tension (this only lasts fraction of a second) Then you release the pressure with a subtle hop from the front foot, wich makes your back toes scoop the board like a spring. The better you get at timing and feeling this, the less force you need to shuvit. Ollies work exactly the same: you put pressure on the tail before you release your font foot weight, wich makes the pop feel more like releasing a spring, rather than just kicking it down. I don't know if it makes any sense as I wrote it.
@Will_RodU Жыл бұрын
@@roachcuca3190 I think what you wrote makes sense, and I can definitely try it. 👍🏼 The thing I'm trying to wrap my head around is, if I do it like that, it sort of makes sense if I jump straight up with my front foot. But, if I have to jump forward a bit to land on the board then I feel like as soon as I lift my front foot the board will still attach to it because the board will spring up along with it, so I'll still be kicking it forward in a way whether I intend to or not. I don't know if I can lift my front foot fast enough where it will stop making contact with the board before I start rotating it. Also, if I do develop this bad habit, which other tricks could it affect down the line? I ask this because if you say for example that it will make kickflips harder later because of X and Y, then that will certainly motivate someone like me to change my technique. Otherwise I might end up preferring landing the trick the wrong way than getting frustrated the right way 😅 I do appreciate the feedback and advice 👍🏼

I finally landed a shove it tonight! I know it's not supposed to be that hard a trick but I'm mad happy about it. It only took a couple weeks of trying the same thing over and over based on a different half remembered tutorial video, which I realize now was probably not the best way to go about it lmao. Your advice to put your toe over the lip and experimenting with the exact placement from there is what finally made it click. The first one I nearly landed right as I was getting fed up trying. My back foot landed on the tail and it took me a second to realize what had happened, I wish I could see my face lol. I immediately tried again, my feet landed right on the bolts, and right as I landed, my hand came down, accidentally hit my keys in my pocket, and my car unlocked. So I took that as permission to go home for the night! Anyhow, just wanted to say thank you for the video, even if it's a few years old at this point! I'll definitely be checking out more of them now.

haha thank you 😂 I was reliving my childhood of not being able to shove it or use a tech deck. Still can't do any tricks on a tech deck, but it's a nice visual 😂 Glad you liked the video! 💪

Thanks for the tips! I as beginner I noticed that I lean forward while jumping and my board rolls behind. I'll try to follow your advice next time I try😎 keep up good work👍

Like leaning forward towards the nose? That definitely can happen. It's something I still remind myself not to do 🤦♀️ Glad you liked the video though 😃
