38:30 the rope on the tree is a shimenawa - those are usually used to indicate the presence of a god/spirit (kami), you can see them in shinto shrines in Japan. Totoro appears to be one of the kami. I haven't watched Totoro in a long while and also got emotional at the tree growing scene for some reason, so I was glad to see it had the same effect on Sarah x) I'm far from an expert on spiritual/cultural manners, but from my surface-level knowledge and impressions after living in Japan for a few years, I really love the emphasis on taking care of nature and being grateful to it that seems to be intertwined with shinto practices. Thank you very much for the lovely Christmas watch, hope you have wonderful holidays!

There are many Japanese people who don't have a strong faith in any religion, and I'm one of them. However, as you say, I think there are many Japanese people who naturally have a Shinto-like way of thinking, and what you say is a very Japanese explanation👍 Just as there is a Shinto way of thinking that "everything has a soul," I hope that you, the people around you, and even things and events will have a good year next year☺️✌️

Merry Christmas to Sarah and Adam! I'm from Taiwan, also a big fan of this channel, I have to say...I almost cried out after finding you watched Totoro, at that moment I thought " OMG Sarah is gonna love this! ". I grew up in mid-80's, and I would say no one as my age in asia didn't grew up watching the Miyazaki Hayao's film, maybe we were too young to remember the name"Gibli Studio", but when somebody talks about Miyazaki Hayao the legend, we would be like" Oh! Totoro's director." We even have a Chinese cover of the theme song of it, and I believe every elemantary school, or even high school has played it at lunch time through the broadcast system. It became the common memory of our generation. In my perosnal defination, Totoro is the best one above all the Miyazaki Hayao's work. Just like Adam's saying, they had put so much work trying to recurrence all the detail, all of the kid's movement, perspectives, that's incredible . I majored in creative writting at my college, We put so much work to try to make our fiction character real, even in a fantasy story, it's just taking everything to design the right movement with right emotion in right situation. So I give all my respect to Mr.Miyazaki to make daily life on the screen seems so natural, so simple, normal, but never boring. Also, The mother nature takes a big part in Japanese religeon, to make it simple, they believe the mountain, wind, plants,flowers... everything have spirits in it to respect, You can clearly see Totoro is coming from this kind of concept. I was getting emotional too at the tree growing scene everytime. Same as Sarah. :)

Thank you for the wonderful explanation!! As you pointed out, in Japan, gods are enshrined everywhere. On the night when the two sisters were waiting for the bus with their father in the dark, there was a white fox statue at the old small shrine that Mei was afraid of (59:40). That is a representation of "Inari," the fox deity found all over Japan. Did you know that the mascot for Inarizaki High School in Haikyuu is a fox? For Japanese people, hearing the word "Inari" immediately brings to mind the fox deity. (Sorry if you already know.)
@mihida1233 күн бұрын
@@hachi1404 Thank you for the farther explanation! I know that "Inari" means fox diety. Actually I was going to point out the same thing(59:40) in the first message but I was afraid to make it too long.XDDDD it's really amazing to see someone filled it up in response. :) I didn't find it when I was a child, really happy to notice it as a grown-up. It makes me wondering if not just Totoro, but every god, deity, spirits can use the catbus? Maybe Totoro showed up there because of he just has finished visiting The Fox deity...? I also notice at 1:36:40, there were "Taisha大社", "tomb passage墓道", "Three mounds三之塚", which makes me believe the cat bus is well-loved by all kinds of spiritual exists, gods, dieties, guardian spirits, ghosts... By the way, love Haikyuu too! it's really cute how Haikyuu uses the animal to represent their own team spirit!
@@hachi1404 Thank you for the reply too^^ I wouldn't say my japanese is good but I do dig in Japan's artwork for a long time. There are many great writers, composers and artists in your country, how lucky you are! Anyway, really nice talking with you^^ wish you have a wonderful new year as well!

My Neighbor Totoro was released in 1988. The story is set in the late 1950s to early 1960s, during Japan’s Showa era. 😊 I was born in the 1980s in Japan, and this was the first movie I ever saw, back when I was in kindergarten. Its theme song is very famous, and anyone from my generation in Japan would have grown up listening to it.😊

This movie is a classic! You must have seen totoro at least once if you have been to Japan since his cute character design is pretty popular. This ghibli movie is culturally relevant and emits childhood nostalgia for traditional Japanese familylife on the countryside. It’s also deeply personal to Hayao Miyazaki, the cofounder of studio ghibli, since he lived a similar childhood on the countryside with his brother and father. They had to suddenly move there when Miyazaki was about seven, because his mother was hospitalized for years because of tuberculosis. Satsuki and mei might be a reflection of the emotional state of him and his brother. What I also find really interesting about the story is the casual perspective around the supernatural, which seems cultural and encapsulates the curiosity of a child’s mind. There is also a ton of folklore depicted that people explain I video essays, articles etc. The ending especially has a few interpretations connected to a real event.

Great reaction as always!! If you get the chance, I highly recommend watching ”Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” and ”Castle in the Sky”. Both are works by Hayao Miyazaki, older than "My Neighbor Totoro", but they’re absolutely amazing and will likely match your tastes perfectly Despite being older films, they don’t feel dated at all even today. When I first watched Nausicaä on TV as a child, I was so stunned that I was in a daze for several days. Watching it again as an adult with friends, I was reminded of how much of a masterpiece it is. These two are my top picks among Miyazaki’s works.

Note they did a follow up special to this with mai and totoro having to go return a baby catbus mai found to its mom and mai goes with totoro on an adventure, but it never got released outside of japan. You can watch it at the Ghibli museum in japan still.
The time period of this anime is set in 1952. It is seven years after the end of the war.

Thank you for watching Totoro. Ghibli films skillfully incorporate stories and direction that are very nostalgic and touch the heartstrings of many Japanese people, and I believe that the same is true for many foreigners. However, since many works set in Japan express unique customs, values, or ancient religious views, there may be times when you do not understand or are confused, but I would be happy if you can enjoy the story of each work with an open mind. By the way, other than Totoro, my favorites are Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, and Princess Mononoke. In particular, I was very overwhelmed and greatly impressed by Princess Mononoke when I first saw it at the cinema as a child.

2:19, 23:19, 1:18:06, 1:11:35 The music reminds me of my elementary school days in Japan, when it would often play during recess, lunchtime, or while we cleaned the classroom after eating. I’m not sure how it is in other countries or the schools where Sarah and Adam grew up, but it’s customary for students to clean the classrooms, hallways, stairs, and even the toilets in Japan. Not only My Neighbor Totoro, but also the music from Kiki’s Delivery Service was often played during recess and cleaning time, so listening to it brings back memories of my childhood as well as the movies. I don’t clearly remember how old I was when I first watched this movie, but I think it was during my elementary school years. Studio Ghibli films are very familiar to us Japanese, and they’re so popular that they are regularly broadcast every few years on a program called Friday Roadshow. If you enjoyed this movie, I highly recommend checking out Kiki’s Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Princess Mononoke. I really love your predictions and analyses. Thank you for such a wonderful video this Christmas!

aside from Spirited Away, all of Miyazaki's movies are set around postwar times, Miyazaki himself was the son of an airplane engineer (did you see Kenta playing with wooden planes earlier in the movie) and most of his work has an anti-war feel to it. So most of his stories have a late 1940s-1950s feel to it, it is very likely that the mother had pneumonia which would have a long treatment back then in any country but in Japan, being the post war and a losing nation, the situation would have made it even harder for her. Moving her to a hospital in the countryside would be beneficial for her indeed, but still, a change of environment could also have its moments, especially if you're used to the smog of a big city like Tokyo or Osaka. This is just a theory on my part. ps. I'd recommend that when you have the time, you look up Joe Hisaishi in concert on youtube and put it in the background while you're doing other stuff around the house if you don't want to just sit and watch. He did all of the sountracks for Ghibli.
@user-bh9bc8rl7d4 күн бұрын
Among Miyazaki's works, "The Wind Rises" and "The Boy and the Heron" are set before and during the war. "Totoro" is set in the countryside a few years after the war. He himself is quite anti-war, but on the other hand, he has a strong admiration for the mechanics of airplanes and fighter planes, and he himself has mentioned this contradiction. "Spirited Away," which you mentioned at the beginning, should be set around the 2000s, the same time the film was released. The oldest setting in Miyazaki's works is probably "Princess Mononoke." It is set in the Muromachi period, about 700 to 800 years ago. Incidentally, Ghibli also has "The Princess Kaguya," which is set in the Heian period, older than Princess Mononoke, and "Grave of the Fireflies," which is set at the end of the war, but these are Takahata's works, not Miyazaki's.

This story contains the same theme as “Princess Mononoke” in the background. People cleared the forest to expand their fields, and in doing so, they used fire and iron. Fire and iron are the enemies of Totoro, the god of the forest. Satsuki is beginning to use fire and iron. So she was almost approaching the time when she could no longer see the spirits. It was a miracle that she was able to meet Totoro. There seems to be a theme in Miyazaki's works that people lose many things in exchange for technology. I do not mean to deny science, but he seems to be appealing to the importance of moderation.

They're moving out from Tokyo's city area to a more rural and cleaner air place for the mother has always been my understanding. I live near where the movie takes place, its about a 60 min train and bus ride to center Tokyo, I don't think it would change too much even back then so, daddy has to take an 1 to 1.5 hour train ride into Tokyo to do his university work.

Hahaha, being an artist who knows a bit about animation, comparing this to Demon Slayer feels almost like an insult! Not bc Demon Slayer's animation is bad quality, not at all, but because Ghibli's movies are so amazing lol Demon Slayer works on a TV budget - and so they reasonably cut corners and save their founds for big jaw droping fight sequences. In Totoro it would be hard to find scenes which are animated "easy" way. Everything, down to the backgrounds that are full of life in a way TV series just can't usually afford, is crafted with love and utmost attention to details ♥

I'm not sure if the idea that "everything has a soul" is a typical Japanese way of thinking that has been passed down since ancient times, or a Shinto-like way of thinking that is called polytheistic, but there are many Ghibli films that make me feel strange, even as a Japanese person. Few Japanese people have strong faith in any religion, but in a sense, there is an awareness that everything has a soul, and that everything has a god, so we cherish not only people but also things. I think that there are many Japanese who have been taught this teaching as if it were natural, or something that is natural. Even as a Japanese person, I feel like I'm being reminded of this ancient way of thinking every time I watch a Ghibli film. Well, the most important thing is to enjoy it no matter how you feel lol

I don't think any age is too young to have a crush. thats why they are crushes, because they don't last and the target maybe too young to reciprocate. in the 2nd grade I had a crush on a boy and he bullied me so i pretended I still had it for 2 years just to piss him off. okay the father is at the hospital because they don't have phones so he assumes they are home safe with Nanny. Nanny hasn't called them yet they hope to find Mei.

The thing that I looooooove about this movie is the great dad it has! In animé, is dificult see good parents. Moms you see more, but dads? Not so much. Moreover, you see a lot of teanagers cooking for themselves at all that, like Satsuki, but their parents almost never you can see then, like they are the persons responsables for the house and not the parents. So, in 1988, in Japan, that has very strict gender roles, seeing a excelent dad that do the housekeeping and care with patiences and love for their children? PRICELESS!!!! Minus the bath scene... Not along with parents and children bathing together... BUT the Totoro dad didn`t deserves this tirade, obviously the BEST DAD in animé EVER!!!!

You are not Japanese right? Japanese kids taking bath with parents is a normal thing in Japan nowadays. I don’t understand why foreigners always think it is sexual. Don’t judge someone culture with a foreigner view. Japanese think westerners kissing kids lips is weird. And in some European countries women are naked in beaches. It’s so weird but Japanese won’t criticize it because it’s their culture.

@@GingerBeer-s6v Well, I understand is normal for them, but something that is normal could be harmful too... Kisses in the lips between parents and kids, I see that like potentially harmful too. Just thinking with My therapist specalized in domestic violence mind, that normalize nudity between parents and children can be harmful and a sign of sexual abuse being normalize in families. That, normalize sexual abuse in families, You can see in every culture, but, Japanese one? With their incest in hentai for example? A Lot of sings...

@@GingerBeer-s6v I know is normal, but something can be normal and being harmful as well. I see kisses in the lips between parental figures and kids also something than can be use for more that filial love... So, I`m a therapist specialized in domestic violence, child sexual violence too, and I think normalize violence is the biggest opponent to change that. Like other violence, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and indentity, society see that like "normal" and great groups for decades have to say "no, is not" for, little by little, changing that notion... And Japan, with this costum and incestuos hentais and ecchi content... have BIG signs that, for them, is veeeery normalize the sexual abuse and in the families in particular.

@@GingerBeer-s6v Fourth time trying to respond. Normal thing can be hurtful thing, like all the discrimination and their violence that we normalize for so many years. Japanese anime has a history of normalize sexual violence in ecchi and hentai... And that, to me, is Another sign that this type of violence is very normalize in there, because they have a history and culture that SEE that that way. And, for the récord, lip Kisses between parental figures and kids, no good either for me.
