I can't believe we made it to the end of Haikyuu!! Season 1!!!! It was quite the journey to get here, but we made it. Thanks for sticking with me!
This episode was equal parts sad and uplifting. We obviously can't forget about the heartbreaking match against Seijoh but I was left feeling so excited and hopeful for what comes next!
I hope you loved watching with me as much as I enjoyed making these videos. Stay tuned for Season 2 soon!!

Hey Sarah, there are 2 main tournaments per school year, the summer one the just played being the first, the spring one they are talking about being the second. Usually, the 3rd year students leave the clubs in the middle of 3rd years, to prepare for entrance exams to university, and to have the second years start building the new team. Apparently, in Volleyball and this school, it's optional if they want to stay or not. In some schools it's mandatory to retire mid year I think, and in some sports, like baseball, it's in the regulations, that only players that have been in highschool for 2 1/2 years or less can actually play in tounaments. P.S: the final was to 5 sets, and Seijoh lost in 4, I don't know why they showed the result of the 2nd set there LOL. P.S.S: so excited for season 2, it's my favourite season.

I’m sure someone mentioned it but just in case: Japan’s school years start in early April, and ends in late Feb/Early March- thats why in a lot of Anime that follow a school life, you see Cherry Blossoms (since thats blooming season). So right they’ve been playing together for a few months. The third years, for sports, make a decision after their first tournament if they want to keep playing, or buckle down and study for their University Entrance exams during the rest of the year. Thats also why Asahi mentions not going to Uni, because he doesn’t feel the need to quit the team if he isn’t going to study for Uni. Daichi is considering quitting because, as well as Uni, it gives the 2nd and 1st years time to blend together instead of depending on the 3rd years, since they’ll have an additional half a year year together. So it is 3 years of high school! But team dynamics might change after the early tournament because some 3 years may decide to move on from the team.

Hey Sarah. Inter-high (the first chance to play nationals) starts in June and ends in August. A third-year can participate in it until the end and still have a couple of months to study (in order to get into a good college). Then there's Spring-High, which starts in August and ends in January. Most third years decide that it's best to drop the club activities in order to get better chances at the college entrance exam.

Just to provide some more background. The national tournament, Haruko(spring high), originally started in 1970, and was in March, which caused most 3rd year students to not participate. In 2011, Haruko, was moved to January and to make it easier for 3rd year students participate. And is now typically the 3rd year students last tournament. In addition, there are 3 national tournaments, Inter-High (summer), Kokutai (fall), and Haruko (winter). Inter-High and Haruko are tournaments for high-schools. While Kokutai is a tournament of Prefecture representatives. It's up to the Prefecture to pick the representatives, so sometimes the prefecture will pick a specific school and sometimes they pick strong players from various schools. Haruko get's the most attention and is always in Tokyo at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. And you will hear "Orange Court" being said, the "Orange Court" is the color of the court used at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. Sometimes you hear wanting to stand "center court". During the lead up to the semi-finals the gym has a 4 court layout. In the semi-finals, the layout is changed to a single court only, referred to as "center court". The preliminaries for Haruko are going on now, and I think can be watched live on the sportsbull.jp/haruko/ site. Unfortunately, I don't think they support english menus...

About 3rd years (if it helps), a school year is from April to March in Japan. Besides, in Japan, majority of 3rd years (especially who want to go to post secondary education) retire clubs before summar break to prepare for College entrance exam. But they can choose to stay longer. Timeline↓ April-school year starts June-Inter-high preliminary *usually 3rd years retire at this point End of summar to Fall-Spring tournament preliminaries January-Spring tournament & College entrance exam starts March-Graduation

Takeda is one of the best representations of what a teacher should be that I've ever seen. I loved the way he approached the meeting with the 3rd years, laying out their choices and not sugar-coating or exaggerating what the consequences could be, but rather doing it in an objective way instead of trying to push them one way or the other. He trusts them to know themselves and make the choice that is truly best for themselves.
@TristanSGS
@TristanSGS 6 ай бұрын
The only thing I don't like about what he said is how not preparing for your future would make you fall behind the others. It could just be a translation thing, but it's never a good thing to compare your own "progress" in life to others, but rather to make the choices you want to make. Of course, he does say this right after with the "choose the path you'll least regret years later", so he's still very valid.

Yeah so basically form what I understand, it's normal for third years in Japan to quit sports before the end of the year. It's a combination of passing the torch on to the second and first years, but also, focusing on your academics so you can get into a good university/college. This is not a requirement though and some third years choose to stay on their respective team. This is the choice that Suga Asahi and Daichi are making.

There are three big high school volleyball tournaments in Japan. One is the Inter-High School Championships drawn in Haikyu Season 1. This is a summer tournament. Depending on the school and sport, third graders often retire at the end of this tournament. This is because college entrance exams and job hunting are imminent. After that, the National Sports Festival will be held in the fall. And the biggest thing in high school volleyball is the All Japan High School Volleyball Championship, or "Harukou". "Harukou" is an abbreviation for "Spring High School Valley". It was originally held in March, the beginning of spring.It's the end of the year for Japanese students. In other words, the third grader never participated. (Some schools have a graduation ceremony in February.) However, the holding time of Harukou has changed, and it is now held in January. Therefore, the third grader has not graduated. Many schools retire after the summer tournament, but if the third graders continue their club activities until the last minute of graduation, it is possible to participate in the January tournament. Of course, the schedule is quite tight considering the exam.

The way haikyuu presents it, there's two major competitions: the Inter High, which is what Karasuno was trying to qualify for and there's the Spring Tournament. 3rd years usually retire to focus solely on studies due to college applications and other possibilities. This is what Date Tech did, if you remember. Their captain did retire and said it was up to Aone (no eyebrows guys) and Futakuchi to lead Date Tech in the next tournament, on spring. This is not a rule, only a common thing to happen. Most sports anime present themselves that way with two major tournaments. Great video as always sarah and good job noticing the left hitter there c:

Japan HS volleyball timing: April -> school starts. August -> "Inter-High" (1st of 2 annual major tournaments; Haikyu Season 1). January -> "Spring" (year-end, other major tournament, used to be in March) tournament. Typically, unless your school has a really good chance of making nationals in January, 3rd-year students quit clubs and focus on studying for university entrance exams after August. (In fact, in public middle schools, 3rd-year retirement after August is mandatory unless you're in an outside-school private club or have a sports recommendation)

Haikyuu is so amazing because of its emotional beats. The way it captures personal adversity and struggle in the pursuit of self-improvement and a dream, is both excellent and inspiring. It lets you live in that moment, to feel it. And its devotion to ideals of hard work and perseverence speak to everyone in some way, shape, or fashion. So to have an Olympian, a Volleyball player, and champion react to it, is amazing. But to have one who is emotional, who both values and truly enjoys the emotional beats... That's pretty amazing! We love Haikyuu because of its emotional downs, and ups! To see her live it all, invested in not just the volleyball, but the emotional story its telling, is everything.

Others have mentioned it already, but this is still technically early in the school year, so the third years aren’t exactly graduating yet. The reason they’re talking about potentially leaving the team is because during the second half of the year, a lot of third years tend to leave their clubs in order to focus on their upcoming college entrance exams. They can choose to stay if they want, but of course doing so means they can fall behind on their studies if they’re not careful. Asahi said he’s not planning to go to college so it’s not an issue for him, but Daichi and Suga are, so it would be understandable of them to leave.

School year in Japan starts in April and the third years have college entrance exams in around February so that is why the school recommends the students to finish their club activities early and focus on their studies. The entrance exams is very competitive and basically only have one chance to pass. Unless you are entitled to special scholarship. Asahi was not planning to go to college so he can continue playing but Suga and Daichi was in the advanced class. That is why Takeda-sensei advised them to choose the pass that they won’t regret in the future. (Failing means unemployed and studying till the next year’s entrance exams.) I was amazed how you remembered how Hinata met Kageyama at school way back in S1Ep1!!! I’ll definitely stick with you through the Haikyu journey till the end! No failure here!

Sarah -san, thank you for your sending❣️ I’m looking forward to your comment of 2 season🌟 Spring match findet in January statt. Actually, January is winter, but because of the following background, it is said "spring match". ……….…… The spring match(official name: All Japan Volleyball High School Championship)was took place in March (early spring), but it has changed to January (for 3rd students, busy with their career path). The nickname is remained. It is not unnatural because…… Traditional is said in Japan January "new spring". (Now fast only use on new year-greeting.) And spring match is aird on TV in large scale, so it may be more major than interhigh for the general public.

6:50 After the inter-high, there is still another tournament called the "spring tournament" or the "nationals" where schools all over Japan participate, one school representatives for each prefecture. The representatives are determined by a preliminary matches in each prefecture. This is the biggest tournament of all, and playing here is the greatest dream of all high school volleyball team. This tournament happens near the end of the school year. Since the 3rd years have to prepare for college entrance exams, it is actually recommended for them not to join here anymore, since studies must comes first. That's what they're talking about here.

The reason I love watching middle school/high school sports (both in real world and in anime) is how raw and pure and straight forward these kid’s emotions are🍀 Especially times like at the end where Hinata and Kageyama just screams and run with all their might not sure how to deal with these emotions🥺✨ So pure and beautiful 💕

So 2 tourneys a year, the thing is for seniors they have a hard wall to overcome on the 2nd one. Colleges in Japan are very competitive and students often go to cram school after school to just study enough to place and get in. Many seniors will drop out of extracurriculars at a certain point in the year to concentrate on their studies while they, if they stay would still be spending a lot of that time practicing.

There´s an OVA (special episode) that is recommended to be seen between season 1 and 2. It´s about Nekoma. You won´t be lost if you enter season 2 without having seen it, but it tells you what they are up to. It´s call The arrival of Haiba Lev. I think you can find it on KZbin.

Sarah, every year there's two big events in total. Both of them have a ''qualifier tournament'' to decide which team is the best in a region (in Karasuno's case: who's the best in Miyagi since that's where they live). Think of regions as states in the USA. Then, the winner of this tournament gets to compete in Nationals to see who's the best in Japan, only ONE team in Miyagi gets to qualify (the tournament winner) Karasuno didn't even get past the qualifiers, they lost to Oikawa's team, and Oikawa's team lost to Shiratorizawa. Shiratorizawa now gets to compete in Nationals (which happens off-screen) while all the other teams in Miyagi lost their chance. But this is not their last chance to compete in a National Tournament, like I said there's TWO big events, Karasuno lost their chance in the first one but they still have the Spring Tournament which is the second event, it has the same rules as the first one. Normally, if you lose at the first event, Third Years tend to leave the club to focus on their future but they decided to stay.

School year in Japan started on April. Currently Karasuno is approaching summer break and their second semester, which means there's only about half a year left for the third years. Therefore, usually on the second semester, third years start to stop their club activities to focus studying for university entrance exams; unless they plan to pursue a career in relation to their club (like being a pro athlete), in which case the school will usually support their club activities. There are even schools who ban third years to participate in clubs altogether. Fortunately Karasuno isn't one of them XD I don't know if the spring tournament is bigger or not, but both inter high and spring tournament is nationwide. This year's spring tournament happened to be hosted by Tokyo, so that's where they're going if they managed to pass the prefectural prelims.

7:08 There's still the Spring National Tournament, which takes place in January, before the third years graduate in March. In fact, it was called Spring Tournament because it used to take place late March, after third years already graduated, but was moved to January so the third years have one last chance playing. What the third years are discussing here is that third years usually quit the team after Summer Interhigh to focus on the college entrance exam. If you go back and watch the end of the Karasuno vs. Date Tech match, you would see the Date Tech's captain telling Aone and the other second year that the third years are quitting. There are a couple of exceptions: (1) third years who are really good, like Ushiwaka and Oikawa, who continue playing college or pro after high school (2) third years playing on teams that have a very good chance making it to Nationals, basically, anyone on Shiratorizawa and Aoba Johsai, and of course (3) the Karasuno third years because plot armor. 😂

Regarding the 3rd years. Basically, they still are in the middle of the school year. So there are 2 prefectural tournaments per season and they lost the 1st one. So they are given the choice to stay and play for the 2nd tournament, or leave the club and focus on studying for the entrance exams for University. That's why Suga, being a model student, was given emphasis by the other teacher knowing that his exam scores might not be good if he does not focus on studying

This episode is once again so interesting. Not only because of the conflict right at hand, but also because of the way everyone deals with it. The 1st years are mostly lost, frustrated and just out of it. The 2nd years kinda get it, they have the instinct to meet together but also they still have the illusion that "the 3rd years said x". Where the 3rd years also meet but this time they talk the REAL talk. They have different levels of maturity and relationships.

This comment is five days late and you probably won't see it anyway but you're one of my favorite Haikyuu reactors ever! (And trust me, I've watched a LOT of Haikyuu reactors lol). Not only for your insightful commentary as a professional volleyball player, but your incredible attention to detail and your ability to remember even side characters' names so early on means that out of all the reactors I've watched, you've managed to pick up so much more of the nuance and appreciate just how good the writing of the show is. Also I love how you get so emotionally invested in the story. Even though I've rewatched this series so many times now, all the emotional moments still get to me and I get so hype during the games, so watching the series with you really does feel like I'm watching it with a friend experiencing the same emotions I am. Anyway, I'm so excited to follow you on your journey as you explore Seasons 2 - 4 (Also please do watch the OVAs as well! There is one OVA that you should watch before you start Season 2 which is "The Arrival of Haiba Lev". It will help provide more context to certain events in Season 2.

So Japan’s school year starts in April and continues until next year’s March. The tournament they just lost is inter high which is held in summer and in Japan most students leave the club after this tournament in order to focus on their studies to go to the college. But if they want to they can stay until the last tournament which is Spring National they’re talking about which is held in January.

ok so to explain each school year ends and starts late march early april for highschool in japan at this point its only been a couple months and it's june they missed out on hte first national tournament which takes place in june/july im pretty sure what they are talking about here is playing in the spring national tournament the second one of teh school year which happens in early january. which is still a couple months from graduation the reason they are discussing it though is in most schools 3rd year students drop their extra curriculars the second half of the school year to focus on exams the only exception in athletics are normally power house schools or where the players are likely going to continue to compete in college or proffessionally

Great vid as usual. Adding my support as usual. Leaving my personal opinion about some of the iffy translations as usual: 5:15「俺達でもう一回行くって言った」➔ "WE said we were going once more" This is clearly a mistake. It should be "HE said we're going there again". Tanaka is continuing his talk about what Sawamura said back when they 1st met up with Hinata & Kageyama. 6:08 「前からそう決めてたんなら何も言わないけど、そうじゃないなら、最後くらいもっとやりたいようにやんなよ"」➔ "If you've already made your decision, I won't object, but if that's not the case, then at least see things through to the end". This is OK, but feel something more like "I wouldn't object if it were something that you'd decided already a while ago, but if that's not the case, then do what you really want to do (in other words, be honest with yourself) at least at the very end". The biggest gripe I have with their translation is that the main thing for Sugawara is the difference of Sawamura having said that he would stay on for Haru-Kou until this moment vs if he'd said from the start that he was going to retire after Inter-HIgh, but their version can be taken as even if Sawamura had changed his mind right now to retire, Sugawara wouldn't object either as long as it was a definite decision. 13:58 「今回と同じくらい善戦出来るかは解んねぇ」➔ "if we'll be able to have the same level of enthusiasm" This should be more like "I don't know if we would be able to fight to the level that we did this time". 善戦 literally means "fight well", so Ukai's talking about the team's performance level during the game, but "same level of enthusiasm" makes it sound more like he's talking about their mental hype level instead. Gonna look forward to sn2 reactions (& hopefully, OVAs), too.😊

The end of this season is so incredible. You want so badly to see them win, and they wanted so badly to win. Then they lose, and it cuts you to the core, but pushing past that loss is what lets us grow and conquer the next time. It has been great experiencing this with you. One of my favorite things for reactors to do is to have a video after each season to talk the whole thing over, and work through it all again with the whole picture in mind, so I really look forward to that next video. Now I need to actually watch season 2, so I can keep watching your videos. (I finished season one, loved it, but then got really busy and never got back to watch another season.)

The high school Manga in Japan is a story about main characters growing up. At the same time, Jump anime is a story about a voice actor growing up. When Murase Ayumu, who was born in L.A, U.S, got a cast of Hinata, it's only 4th year since he became a voice actor. I think he had accomplished a honorable main character in Jump Manga. (Jump is the most famous weekly Manga magazine.)
