THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE COPIC SKETCH CAPS. It is genuinely infuriating how big of an issue this is. I have tried literally dozens of different sealants and ways to try to fix the cracked caps but absolutely nothing has worked. They're either reactivated by the alcohol fumes, they refuse to seal to the non-stick surface of the specific plastic they use, or - even if an air-tight seal is formed - the alcohol will seep through over time (similar to air leaving a balloon over a few days). When I finally thought I'd found a way to seal it (wax, since it's used to seal bottles of wine) I found that it prevented the marker from drying out, but it caused weird growths on the nibs of both sides. My next (and probably final) attempt will be seeing if I can fill the inner-cap (by taking off the colour-code) with UV-acrylic and see if that works. In the meantime I have a friend with a 3D printer who has offered to print me more caps - which seemed like an ideal solution - except that he can't find a print file for the caps anywhere. He can find the Classic caps and the Ciao caps, but every database has been wiped of the Sketch caps. It's not even that they're behind a pay wall: they're just not there. At this point I have basically the whole Sketch collection (only missing one) but I've had to replace probably 40 markers over the years due to cracked caps and still have at least a dozen more with cracked caps that it's only a matter of time. I'm extremely careful with my markers. It's not user error: it's absolutely a design flaw that they're trying to push off onto the users (their FAQs, last time I checked, blatantly asked "are you sure you didn't drop them or sit on them?"). I'm sorry to focus on this one thing when you just dedicated so much time and money to such a large video, but the Copic Sketch caps genuinely infuriate me, so thank you so much for calling attention to it. (And to be clear, of my 700ish Ohuhu, NONE of them have had the same problem.)
@SarahRenaeClark2 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your own experience with this. I was really surprised when I realized just how big of an issue it was, yet it’s not talked about more often. Time to shine a light on it so Copic has to take action!
@DADA-ir6kq2 ай бұрын
I absolutely agree. I have only a small collection of sketch markers (9). But three of them dried out. All of these had cracked lids. I luckily caught this issue before my big copic haul. So i only bought the ciao even knowing the downsides (no lid numbers, smaller tank, easy to roll away). the lid numbers i'm fixing by using printed stickers and often used markers i'll buy the refills. Additionally I got almost all the ohuhu and quite a few winsor &newton. Of these I only ever had one slightly dried up marker because the lid wasn't all the way shut, so it's definitely not my mistreatment of the markers.
@melissagoodman6442 ай бұрын
Hello I purchase empty markers, that way I have 2 spare lids/caps for when one breaks. Saves the expense of replacing marker. Also you have spare nibs too
@MayContainBirdseed2 ай бұрын
@@melissagoodman644 Thank you for the suggestion. Unfortunately where I live buying an empty Copic marker costs the exact same as buying one full of ink, or at best one dollar less, so it doesn't save me any money. Not sure if that's the case elsewhere. In the meantime I've simple saved the "good" cap off of a dead marker so I can at least salvage something. That said, if Copic started selling the caps alone I would absolutely stock up like a squirrel going on winter. (But in order to do that they'd have to admit there's a big enough issue to make it profitable, and I can't see them being willing to do that.)
@taytaythehufflepuff85322 ай бұрын
THANK YOU for spending so much time talking about markers. I wanted to share personal experience (of me and my friend using Copic Sketch). Copics, for hobbyists, are just way too expensive. We both got them because we love marker art and it really does make you feel good to spend money to invest in your creative journey. My friend does far more marker art than I do, and runs her markers dry a lot. She's had copic markers ordered in that come in dry, and we've both had markers with lids that don't snap on right, thus drying them out. It's disappointing to spend $5 - 7 on a single marker, only for it to dry out because a lid doesn't fit properly or you don't realize it doesn't snap correctly. Neither of us have this problem with Ohuhu markers, and since they're more affordable, we've both decided that it's probably better to stick with them instead. Edit: upon watching the ending, I see you too have run across this problem. Glad to know we're not going insane.

markers have always been notorious for not matching lids. I make swatches on strips of label or sticker paper, and then wrap them around my marker so when color picking from my maker box every marker has an accurate swatch on it! (some do periodically need replacing as markers are almost always dye based and not light fast but i hope this is helpful to anyone who maybe is looking thru the comments for help with this problem!)
@cliochene65282 ай бұрын
I did the same, with my collection of cheap double tip water based markers. When you see the caps you believe there are a lot of shades, but once on paper you realise you have 3times the exact same color. So much less variety than expected. So i swatched them all on paper, and taped each paper to its feltpen.

Pros: -no need for sharpening -very sturdy, leaves the impression that I could drop them on the floor and they would be fine (I'm not testing that) -double pointed, can also be used horizontally Cons: -despite being All Pigment the colors don't come out easily, probably a side effect from the sturdiness -only has 12 or 24 sets -random neon yellow in the 24 set for some reason im not sure why

One thing I'd really be interested in seeing, is for the alcohol markers with refills and replaceable tips, is mixing and matching different brands. For example, can you use Copic brush tips in Ohuhu markers? Or if you prefer the paler less vibrant colors of some other brands can you just put that in a different marker brand that is usually more vibrant and have it work the same? Or are there other factors than just the dye affecting how vibrant the color is? (such as how the brush tip soaks up and then applies the color) I think it'd be really neat to see a video testing this with the alcohol marker brands that came out on top. But I also understand if you don't want to touch markers again for a while 😅 Really impressive video overall though, and a great resource for the artist community! I really appreciate that you make these videos, you helped me out when I was looking for a good sharpener for my colored pencils after being really disappointed with the official prismacolor sharpener. Thanks for all your hard work! Also think I want to try out those Faber Castell Pitt markers sometime, they seem interesting...

Absolute insane amount of dedication and detail, and although I was completely lost when you were talking about computer code, (I’m not very good with computers) I could appreciate the brains and enormous effort behind it. I’d just like to point out that Watercolour Markers, which is something I have a bit of experience with, while they do very much differ brand to brand, you really need to work with them on just watercolour paper, they are meant really just for light sketching and then to come in with a watercolour brush and disperse the pigment. It’s sort of like carrying around a mini dry palette but in texts form they are not meant at all for layering. You can mix a couple of colours together, but that’s normally done on a palette or piece of plastic where you scribble some colour out. Blending is not really done either between just the markers they are ment to be blended with water. Watercolour Markers work hand in hand with water and a brush they are not meant to be used by themselves alone. Otherwise you would just use a normal marker whether it be alcohol or water based. Water based markers are not really meant for layering either, and really only exist as a safer option for people who are really sensitive and for children. Great for low staining of clothe, skin and also toxic safety. Watercolour Markers are a category all of their own. They’re not meant to work solely on their own. You are meant to use them as a portable pigment stick that you then dissolve with water and something I discovered very early on is that as soon as you have put the pigment down, it does matter how long you wait to activate it with water, because even the best, will become more permanent or or less likely to dissolve and give you a seamless Watercolor look if you let it sit too long on the paper. This will vary brand to brand, but it’s best if you go in as soon as possible.

Noooooooo I don’t think I’ll be buying more alcohol markers for a while. 😂 Sorry I missed them!

thanks for such an indepth research video. One aspect I would be interested to research is marker fidelity over time. I have been using alcohol markers a long time and I have quite the collection of various brands. I was shocked to discover that my spectra markers have completely disintegrated and their color has completely changed over just 2-3 years. a follow up video in a couple years would be really interesting.

Wow. You’re amazing! I’ve been putting off the decision of which brand, and this will help.

Excellent video! I rarely even use markers, but found this to be very informative, plus a genuinely pleasant watch. (Basically, not fact filled but boringly delivered, lol.) Keep up the great work, it's appreciated! 😊

All of that for ohuhus to get the crown 😄 you worked so hard on this video, I’m impressed by your dedication into coding and all sorts ‘just’ for us 😊 I can honestly say there is no other KZbinr like you and your team, the amount of research, resourcefulness, and staying power among you all 😄👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 and then to cut it all down into a 50 minute video, very impressive. Take a bow 😄👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤

Thank you! I was genuinely surprised at the winner, but it makes sense. And I’ve personally used them for a while and loved them.

Omg I can't believe you did so much work for having winners in Pencils, sharpeners, marker and other. Great job should have take so muchhhh work !!! But this is so useful and I hope you had fun with the visuals and the techniques. Love the fact that you made an Excel and calculate properly every color matches. I would be this kind of girl but clearly can't have the money and the time to do what you ve done ahaha

The amount of work… 😳😳😳 It makes for an amazingly informative video, or should I say documentary about markers. Love (and understand) the little insanity breaks 😂 Great work Sarah! This is so helpful for so many people 🥰❤️ and a fun watch at the same time!

This is amazing and makes my autistic brain so happy. I’m really excited to watch this video but I needed to come comment first a thank you for dedicating yourself to doing all the tests and more that I could have wanted to see. Never have I gotten to feel like I’ll know every bit of info I’d want like this bc my brain has so much that it wants to know and in a structured, logical testing manner. Like I literally beat my executive dysfunction to grab my laptop just to watch this video in a larger screen. Edit 1: Oh my god you literally used a metronome and beat my brain's logic of "but humans cannot possibly process, even by counting, the exact same amount of time, and if you use a timer, your reaction time to the music will slowly get worse because your brain will become tired and more used to music as a background noise, and the time to start the timer and stop it will vary with each marker." But the metronome has none of those issues!! Same with the stopwatch instead of a timer!

Sarah, you and your team did an amazing amount of work to get this video accomplished!! 👏👏 Well done!! 🥰 I will be making note of this information as I go forward!! 🤗😍 Fortunately, I have the Ohuhu and Crayola super tips, and they both did well in their categories!! 🌈✨️
