The Hidden Truth Behind Being Overly Generous

Have you ever felt like you're constantly the one giving too much in relationships, friendships, or in your professional life? I've been there, believing I was a perpetual giver in a world full of takers. Here's how I stopped.
Words:
Your problem isn’t that you give too much.
Your problem isn’t that you love more.
Your problem isn’t that people walk all over you.
Your problem is that you believe you're a perpetual giver in a world of takers.
For the longest time, that was my narrative. I saw myself as the one who always gave, whether in love, friendship, my work.
Even with my art, it took my over a decade to become brave enough to consistently put out my own work. I’d say things like “I’ll have time maybe later, after I finish my client work.”
I thought this was noble, selfless, respectable. But I've come to realize, it was none of those things.
It was a choice.
And more often than not, when we put others first, we are putting ourselves last, and then complain that the world was out to take what we have to offer.
But here's the truth: no one was stealing from me and no one is stealing from you.
We sometimes choose to be the martyr in our own story, thinking it makes us the hero. We love the idea of being the one who is self sacrificing.
When we say things like we’re the ones who do more, love more, give more,
What we’re really saying is “I believe in you more than I believe in myself.”What we’re really saying is “I think you deserve this love, but not me.”What we’re really saying is “Here, have this piece of me, because I don’t value it enough to hold onto it.”
Because we're not just generous - sometimes, we're hiding. Our willingness to give can be a mask for our expectations, our insecurities, our fears. And true generosity comes from a place of fullness, not from an empty well.
And so I hope you know, that you can be as generous with yourself, as much as you are with others. You are deserving of the same kindness, understanding and love you so freely offer other people.
It might feel uncomfortable.
It might go against your old beliefs.
At the end of the day there is no such thing as too much love or too much giving, but there is such a thing as doing them for the wrong reasons.

What hit hard for me is the line when you said "What you really saying is I believe in you more than I believe in MYSELF" That is really something and made me cry. We all know we do this but when we hear from somebody else it makes us think. Your contents are amazing. Please keep making more and will love to have your recepies as well. I just want to each that dish now. Thank you.

"What you're really saying is, I believe in you, more than I believe in myself; I think you deserve this extra love, but clearly not me." Thank you Sarah. You've no idea how close to home your words here hit for me. Fact is I've already mentally checked out on myself and my life at this point. I take every day that I'm still alive as a bonus, but I ascribe no value to my life because I'm tired of trying to show myself to be of value to others in a way they can comprehend and affirm me back with in a world where sadly no matter how much I'm used to being alone, no man is an island and like it or not we get by on the appraisal and approval and cherishing of others. I'm done. I'm tired, but I often don't sleep. I feel like my entire life past present and future, is just to be a bit player in other people's paths to their own happiness, their happy endings. But they're not for me. Never was, never meant to be. A diamond buried in the ground is still a diamond even if it isn't dug up by someone who knows what a diamond looks like, but for as long as it remains in the ground, it may as well just be another lump of coal for all that would matter to the world or itself. And that's me. I love your channel. I wish you'd post more. I believe in you more than I believe in myself. And I hope whatever love you get, includes the extra overflowing bits that come from what little love I may truly deserve, but I've resigned myself from expecting.

Thank you for this video. Very well spoken truth! Giving too much was also for me an attempt to compensate my low self-esteem by valuing others. A lesson that I also had to learn first, just like setting boundaries before others cross them. But also true for me was: having the feeling that you give more than you get can also be an indication that you have gathered the wrong people (partner) around you. It is also up to others to see when they are getting something. "Treat others as you would like to be treated" is still the fundamental law of functioning social contacts. If they don't appreciate it, then leave these people behind.

You are saying exactly the things I need to hear. This video, the video on hating yourself, the video on romantic love - it's all so perfect I'm 43 and a teacher. It's particularly inspiring to take advice from someone not much older than my students Also love the food making in the background. It's soothing and makes it feel like motherly or grandmotherly difficult advice Bravo!

Hi Sarah, your videos I touched me during a painful break-up when I needed to hear honest words about myself ,about the relationship, about people. You have helped provide clear prospective in the middle of a rough storm. Your videos on unrequited love, hurt people and toxic relationships had I great impact on me that I had to download them and often replay it for courage when I'm weak. Keep producing the honest pure message as I love it. Yugen, South Africa p.s You should consider linking the recipes especially today's meal...dammit I so wanted a bite

dearest beautiful Sarah! Ever since “Colours” I’ve never missed a video. Your videos pack so much in a short snippet. They are masterpieces. These latest ones with the food are gorgeous. You are so talented. What comes through the most is how much you want to share your journey to self-compassion with as many as you can. I remember watching the one about “if they don’t love you back…” after a bad breakup and it really helped to give me that compassionate perspective I sorely needed. I thank YOU from the bottom of MY heart!

Hey Sarah You’re videos are really great. One feedback from me is I think the old way of doing it was more creative than the new way. I mean now there’s something else you’re doing and our attention goes towards the food not the video and the message. I hope you understood.
