I’ve wanted to be a physician as far back as I could remember. I was raised by my sickly grandparents since my mother didn’t want me. They’re from a poor uneducated Asian background. My grandparents were my parents, and my real birth parents were unmarried. They took me back from grandparents when my brother was 1, and since my grandparents were getting even more sick. My mother was mentally ill and violent, so my dad left most of the time. She physically abused me for 20 years; strangling me, suffocating me with a pillow, kicking my stomach... I never gave up my dream to be a doctor, even when my grandfather died. His last words were for me to keep going, and do well in school. My birth mother tried to get me to drop out. I was a gifted kid scoring top 1% for every exam until the physical torture got worse and more common. I couldn’t handle it. Even when I got into a good college, she left threatening voice mails and accusing me of being the reason my grandfather died and my dad’s deteriorating health. My grades plummeted and I wanted to die. I had full scholarship. Then I met a normal person that inspired me to take control of what I could. I slept 3 hours a day, and worked two jobs while classes and volunteered in a hospital. I didn’t eat, because I couldn’t afford it. But I refused to die without at least making my promise to my grandfather come true. I graduated, and my last semester GPA was a 3.8. Then my birth mother stole my SSN and identity. And I’m still scared of applying... because I know I can’t expect normal people to relate to my poor background. I’m not a child of elite intellectuals, but I’ll either make it or I’ll die trying.

Report your mother or something and try get your SSN back. Block your mom out of your life, seriously. You need to block her number, move somewhere she doesnt know. You dont deserve to hear any of what she tells you, no one does. Don't let her words get to you, she wants you to fail so you can end up sad and lonely and turn to her, but you won't. You'll do amazing. So don't look back and don't trust her when she tries to manipulate you back to living with her.

Let me tell u that doing something will always be better than none. If you can sort of support yourself without parent aid, you can look to get emancipated. You can also call child services to report your parents. Save all evidence you have of abuse.

I got a bit teary watching this. Always being a top student I found myself in a dead-end street in my second year of university because I was performing really bad. I wanted to give up, I was depressed... It took me a few years to surpass my own struggles and the words of people saying me that I was a total failure, because it took me longer than expected. I almost believed them. As you said, there are many ways to achieve your place in the world besides the "traditional" one, and this experience made me more grateful for what I have and where I am currently. I’m a dentist from Peru. Now I live in the USA and I am planning to apply next year for the International Program and get my degree here. I am 29, I know that probably it will take me a few years to reach my goals, but I do not really care about what people say about my age... because people talk, and they talk a lot. But we only have one life, as far as I know, and I am going to do what I think is better for me. This is MY dream and my age does not make me less capable of achieving my dreams. Someone once told me age is just a number. Everyone has a different path in life and there is no right way to navigate life. Never let someone else's opinions discourage you or affect how you feel about yourself :)

When I told a doctor I worked with that I wanted to go to med school but I was worried about my age, she told me something very inspiring. You will be 30, 40 no matter what you do. But if you decide to go to med school, you might end up being a doctor at that age.

I remember my first day as 4th grade in elementary school so vividly because I also broke down crying in the middle of class from not being able to understand a single word. 댓글은 거의 처음 남기는 것 같아요. 저는 한국에 살고 있고 30대 중후반의 엄마여요. 2살짜리 아이랑 뱃속의 태아까지 이제 곧 두아이의 엄마가 되네요. 사랑 씨 영상을 처음 본건 첫아이 낳고 한 4개월쯤 산후우울증에 한참 시달리던 때 유학 관련 영상을 우연히 보게 된 거였어요. 아이 낳기 전 유학상담일을 했었고 해외 대학 대학원으로 진학하는 학생들 상담을 주로 해서 체대 입시생이 치대생이 됐다는 이야기가 정말 흥미로웠던 것 같아요. 하루 종일 집에서 아기랑 씨름하고 있다가 아기 낮잠 시간에 사랑 씨 영상을 하나씩 보는게 저한텐 한줄기 빛같았습니다. 그렇게 차츰 용기를 얻고 마음을 추스렸던 것 같아요. 저는 대학 전공은 전혀 다른 쪽이고 20대에겐 기획일을 하다가 상담하는 일이 제 적성에 잘 맞다고 생각해서 30대 넘어 진로를 바꾸고 한참 열심히 일하고 있던 중에 임신으로 대학원과 경력 모든 것이 중단되어 꿈을 잃은 것만 같았습니다. 간절히 바랬던 아이였지만 아기를 낳고 막 키울때는 내가 다시 사회활동을 할 수 있을까?란 생각에 모든 것에 자신이 없어졌었어요. 사랑 씨의 인생이야기를 보면서 조금 천천히 가도 괜찮다 다독이며 지금은 전공 관련 서적도 미리 사보고 둘째 아이가 태어나 두돌쯤 되면 다시 대학원에 도전하고 꼭 목표를 이루겠다는 구체적인 계획을 세워놓고 행복하게 육아하고 있답니다. 몇년의 시간이 흐른 뒤에 저도 다른 분들에게 영감을 줄 수 있는 이야기를 들려줄 수 있다면 좋겠네요. 그럼 즐거운 주말 되시고 늘 행복하셔요.

Thank you so much for sharing, I'm a medical student living in a northern african country, I am actually in my last year of medicine, and studying german at the same time to be able to pass the tests and be able to work in Germany. These health fields are really hard to be able to pass exams elsewhere, but I guess I have to keep on pushing. I usually watch your videos while I'm studying to have some productive company haha, and I'm pretty grateful for this video, as sometimes I tend to lose hope very fast. I remember watching your study with me videos to get myself into studying. I recently graduated my BA joint honours, and I can't help but feel I wasted my parents time and effort. I didn't do amazingly or particularly poorly in high school, and the same continued in University. I somehow still managed to scrape by and graduate with first class (just barely). But you've inspired me and given me hope to pursue further studies, hopefully this time in a field that I actually enjoy. 영상을 보는 내내 여러 번 울컥했어요. 저번에도 들었던 이야기지만 영어로 들으니 더 와닿았달까.. 성인이 되어 언어 능력을 높이고, 가족과 떨어져서 지내고, 그것도 타국에서 몇 년씩이나 외국어에 둘러싸여서 지낸다는 게 정신적으로 굉장히 힘든 일이라고 알고 있습니다. 물론 저는 경험이 없기 때문에 사랑님의 고통을 온전히 공감할 수는 없겠지만 화면을 통해 마주치는 사랑님의 눈빛을 통해 간접적으로 느낄 수 있었어요. 저는 수험생, 그것도 장수생이라 주변 사람들과의 교류가 끊어진 지는 거의 2년 정도 되었고 그러다보니 어쩔 때는 하루종일 말을 하지 않을 때도 있습니다. 이런 상태로 시간이 꽤 흐르다보니 대학에 다니고 싶다는 열망에 불타오르다가도 자괴감에 빠져 아무 글자도 눈에 안 들어오는 때가 많았어요. 그런데 사랑님 덕분에 저의 꿈에 대한 열망과 희망이 사그라들지 않았던 것 같아요. 유학에 대한 여러가지 영상과 항상 말씀하시는 just do it 정신에 자기비하 모드에서 벗어나서 공부에 들어간 적도 많았고, 정말 본인의 공부와 본인의 생활을 사랑하시는 모습에 감화되어 '나도 이 사람처럼 살고 싶다'고 생각하며 이 지난한 공부를 놓지 않았습니다. 화면을 통해 마주치는 사랑님의 눈빛을 보며 '나도 이렇게 단단한 눈빛을 가진 사람이 되어야지' 하고 늘 생각합니다. 거의 랜선 멘티 수준이네요ㅋㅋㅋ 영상 올려 주셔서 너무 감사해요. 마지막에 말씀하셨던 Don't give up에는 눈물을 쏟지 않을 수가 없었습니다ㅜㅜ 어휴 위로받은 기분이에요. 사랑님의 행보를 언제나 응원하겠습니다. 항상 행복하시고 좋은 하루 보내세요!

좋아하는 공부를 찾게되신게 정말 부러워요. 저는 안일하게 생각하고 전공을 정했던것 같아요. 저도 사랑씨처럼 20대 초반에 미국에 와서 커뮤니티 컬리지에서 공부를 하고 대학으로 편입을 했는데, 내가 좋아하는 분야를 찾기위해 노력을 하기보다 그냥 제일 무난한 전공.공부가 수월한 전공을 택했고 결국 공부를 즐기면서 하지 못했어요. 그 당시의 선택이 평생을 좌우한다는것을 한참이 지난 후에나 깨달았네요.. 저희같은 1세대들이 외국에서 공부하기가 얼마나 힘들다는것을 알기에 사랑씨의 스토리가 더 멋집니다. 많은 젊은 친구들에게 좋은 영향을 주는 사랑씨 감사하구요. 앞으로의 남은 여정도 잘 해내시길 응원하겠습니다!

I didn’t do so well in high school, I got average grades but some how I got in to biomedicine and I still can’t believe it, it’s my first year and I feel like I’m the dumbest in my class but this has inspired me so much to work harder and achieve, thank u so much for telling us your story

Such an inspirational video! Thanks for sharing your story:) I'm a mature student studying nursing in Australia. Also a non traditional student, who's from Korea. I'm currently in my last year and pursuing my study here has been challenging since I had zero science background (+ language barrier). I had to study 6-7 hours just to understand an hour class. Nothing was easy and I was always stressed and burdened, but studying health-care and building knowledge have been the fun part and I've actually started to like the study. I'm grateful for this opportunity and can't wait to look after people who need help:) I'm motivated by you and wish you all the best 😊

This is truly inspiring! I also went abroad to Costa Rica to study dentistry and it also was difficult for me at the beginning due to language barrier. Spanish is a really difficult language but i couldn't disappoint my parents, and thanks to my new friends from here i was able to learn spanish and persevere! Being abroad it's good to make friends. I will not give up yet!

wow, this is so relatable. i am only just getting over my huge fear of the dentist after having four teeth taken out and my braces fitted. i saw how much the dentist comforted me and helped me get over my fear and i really thought it would be amazing for me to do the same for others. now, 1 and a half years away from university, i am getting opportunities from my school about dentistry. i am not sure if i want to do it but after hearing this you have really inspired me to just go for it. seriously, thank you. 💛

I'm crying watching this, as i misjudged you for a really good student all your life and yesterday i had a breakdown because i really felt like a failed in life and missed my chance at doing really well. Then today i was brought to this old video of yours and when i watched it, i couldn't believe how many similarities we have, I'm only 20 and I'm not so sure what i should be doing as my degree titled changed after not doing so well during my first year. But I must believe and work hard because that is in my control. I will try my best and I realise opportunities will make their way to me so who knows what the future holds. Thank you so much for being such an inspiring person and sharing your journey, I know it's hard sharing sometimes. You are my literal role model.
