The love triangle is probably the thing that crippled this miniseries even before it became a show. The characters NEVER feel like a cohesive team with the same goals. Sure they fight the big bad together, but in between the actual plot points these characters never really form a friendship as a group. The characters in original Avatar form a solid group dynamic pretty early, and even when new characters like Toph and Zuko got introduced to the primary cast they unified pretty quickly. In LoK there’s all this petty relationship bullshit and they never stop trying to get in each others pants. In OG Avatar there was never any of this wasted screen time (yes there is the Katara and Aang crush stuff, but that was a never a huge focus and it never came at the expense of the larger plot). I still don’t know why the spent so much in this relationship crap, they didn’t in the original. Perhaps it’s because the OG characters were younger (didn’t stop people from shipping them though).

@Ghostel35914 жыл бұрын
The main advantage OG Avatar has over Korra - aside from some other reasons like better planning because OG Avatar originally was supposed to be series and Korra was supposed to be a one season story... IS A NUMBER OF EPISODES PER SEASON They had time to lay out exposition... To draw a bigger and better world... To give characters time to develop and grow as a team. Korra is always in a "speedrun" mode because every season is 13 series long... And oh boy, oh boy... Let's not forget the best example of how Korra was starved for more episodes to maintain proper pacing - 2nd season just had to dedicate 2 of 13 episode for an Avatar Origin story (which is considered by many people to be the best part of a season) - and was left with 11 episodes to not only tell the story but also develop characters, world etc etc etc... And we all know that result was "not bad, but not impressive" because of that.

@@raheemsmith2996 Well... you are correct and in my opinion that was kinda the point. Technology leaves behind tradition, we've seen it happen in our world and we also see how it is happening in their world. In the past bending was important because it was a matter of survival, most non-benders had to subjugate themselves to powerful benders. Now with the development in technology things are becoming more balanced to everyone. I actually really like what the creators did with the bending, by developing technology people seem like they don't practice as much, which results in making the benders into more regular people because they don't require bending for their survival. Besides, technology involving is normal and even in Atla the fire nation was already quite developed. The mechs may seem weird to some people (I also thought it was a bit out of place at first) but after looking at the bigger picture there is no reason as to why they don't fit. In the span of 2 generations bending became punches and kicks, spirits became just animals but with color, the spirit world became just trees but with color and the culture and tradition was replaced with modern New York City. They took all the things unique in ATLA and basically either turned them to simpler familiar to us in real life, or made them so common in the avatar world that they lost their attire. @austinjohnsen44303 жыл бұрын
The show questions the role of the avatar? The role of the avatar doesn’t really change that much by the end of the show. I feel like the show kind of dances around the question of what is the avatar’s place in a modernized world by constantly dishing out new bad guys for Korra to fight. I would have loved to have seen her try and figure out what her place in society is when there’s no villains to fight. Speaking of which, the political ideologies of the villains kind of get strawmaned in some ways. Especially Zaheer’s anarchy is mostly chaos shtick.
@frickinfrick84883 жыл бұрын
@@austinjohnsen4430 Yeah I see what you mean, I think the villains set up a lot of good questions about the avatar in the modern world but it would’ve been nice to see Korra figure out how she wants to use her position, albeit I understand if the show didn’t want to offer a concrete answer for that. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the villains to real world ideologies as if they’re supposed to be a 1 to 1 allegory. I think the villains work well in their own fictional universe and make sense in that world, but when you compare them to real political movements it gets messy. The worst example is Amon = Communism, Amon makes perfect sense in the world of Avatar where there are literal superpowered people who oppress others with their genetic superiority that an anti bender movement would arise. Comparing benders to the rich upper class is not a good comparison because one is genetic and the other isn’t, they’re completely different circumstances that would lead to different political movements. Similarly Zaheer shouldn’t be a direct representation of our real world anarchism, he’s meant to represent air bender philosophy taken to the extreme. He has surface level similarities with anarchism but his core values are taken from an entirely fictional culture and I don’t think he was ever meant to be a perfect representation of real world philosophy. Like, of course these characters aren’t good representatives of real world political movements, I don’t think they’re supposed to be when they’re so closely tied to the fictional lore of that universe. Actually now that I think about it my original comment was kinda dumb for even comparing them in the first place so my bad on that one.
@austinjohnsen44303 жыл бұрын
@@frickinfrick8488 Korra’s actually pretty similar to Aang in the sense that neither of them need to make a difficult choice for the greater good in the end. Aang doesn’t have to kill Ozai as he feared he would, and Korra doesn’t need to give up her role as the avatar as she knows it in a modernized world. It obviously would have been much bolder if these shows went the opposite direction with these characters. Of course if they did that with Korra we probably wouldn’t get any dope bending fights, which is kind of one the main appeals of this franchise, so yeah. You hit the nail right on the head of why we shouldn’t really bring real world political ideologies into this too much. And on a side note, Zaheer’s kind of an idiot. Did he have a plan to account for the inevitable power vacuum that killing world leaders would create? Like maybe keep a watchful eye to make sure no other dictators rise up?

A civil war between the northern and southern water tribe sounds cool af and I wanted to see more of that. The spirits were also pretty cool and I actually liked the origins episodes. The biggest problem I have is that neither of those stories connect with each other very well which causes the execution to be poor. AngieWinchester338 I also love the show even if it does have some flaws but the korra is a Mary Sue thing was always so stupid to me because in the original avatar azula could easily firebend as a baby but korra the avatar doing that is forced ? two words double standards
@scrubthegod7804 жыл бұрын
Carla Carrero Azula trained for her power she was a prodigy one of the episodes showed her training to bend lightning . Korra did train yes but what is bullshit is her bending 3 elements at like the age of 5 that’s stupid because it is out of no where and impossible because every avatar had to train to bend all 4 but kira can already bend at the age of 5 aang knew he was the avatar before he trained but he couldn’t bend fire water or earth at all.Kora breaks the rules of bending of that alone.

That was a hilarious interpretation and I love it! And I admittedly was a little attracted to Korra because how awesome, tough, and great of a fighter she was; and it was kind of funny to see how much of an opposite she was to Aang. I say throughout the seasons the improvements on the combat & variety of villains were the only things better then the original. Although I have to admit I do like season 2 with its nostalgic flashback animation and a journey to the spirit world was pretty cool!

Always love your videos and look forward to them. Personally though, I felt this one used pseudonyms and jokes for things and actions a bit too frequently. While I know this isn't meant to be a series summary, it was hard to understand what was happening in the show when so many actions and story elements were replaced by jokes. I don't have a problem with the jokes in general, I actually really like most of them, I just feel it was a bit too frequent in this one to the point of making the story really hard to follow despite me having already seen the show (admittedly 8 years ago, but still). Also fun fact, the show creators actually said they based Asami's design off Lust from FMAB.
