The thing I appreciate the most about this show is the attention they pay to collateral damage. The way in which the Guardians clear out the area before fighting the bad guys was great. Nobody died in that opening battle at the white house, not even a soldier. It's nice to see a superheroes go out of their way to actually save people, instead of just punching the bad guy up and down the street.

Some notes from the comics that isn't spoilers: Dupli Kate is painted in a much less sympathetic light in the source material. Omni-Man killed the entire faux Justice League within seconds without a scratch on him. Some race changes occur (Rex, Amber) and Mark's best friend was changed from being a hyper masculine closeted gay man to an openly gay man. Omni-Man was gone longer in the Flaxxians's dimension than what the adaptation portrayed.
@Jenna_Talia3 жыл бұрын
I think the omni man being weaker against the pseudo justice league here is mainly used for drama, but it also would have been a lot more awkward using his suit as a means for Debbie to convict him as it wouldn't have had any signs of a struggle on it. Plus, the flaxxian scene seemed to just be a subversion of our expectations. I imagine everybody thought he'd have been fully trapped in there for as long as the comic said he would've been (and if it's not spoiler territory, what else did he do in the flaxxian world?)
@dandanthedandan75583 жыл бұрын
Even if Omni Man spent an entire day in Flaxxian's world it'd probably only be a short while on earth so that part makes sense Also Mark's best friend changing to being openly gay probably fits today's political climate better. Ngl this show is what Hollywood needs to take notes from if they want diversity. Nothing feels hamfisted and everything is very natural. Spoilers for episode 8 . . . . . I also like how Omni Man doesn't come out unharmed after taking on the guardians cause that tells that Viltrimites aren't gods and that they can be killed - but not now as the world's strongest superheroes have just been wiped out by a single Viltrimite, much less their entire species. It keeps the hope going for the future seasons because this show doesn't have an "all hope is lost" vibe.
@daneroberts19963 жыл бұрын
My favourite thing with this show is how they avoid making Mark's mum (I forget her name) into just a side character, which would be too easy to do, given that kid's shows often ignore parents anyway, and on top of that she's the non-powered family member. Instead, they show that she doesn't put up with her husband being dismissive or rude to her, and that she refuses to believe that just because she's not powered doesn't diminish her worth

I think the fact that they develop each character in that scene in a way where you'll find something likable helps. Red Flash has a struggling life from being in a constant state of boredom by how life moves so slow for him, fish guy is a man who has a love for his job and is hinted to have struggles of making friends cause of how he looks, Martian has the whole thing about self improving and is nice to Nikki. The Wonder Woman like girl is trying to better the world even outside of being a superhero Darkwing is just batman. The supers in the show have a depth to them that tells you "yeah we were made into redshirts, but we still were living people" with all of them being good in one way or another.

Fun fact. In the comics Will ( the sassy gay best friend) didn't come out as gay until about halfway through the run (over 70 issues in) as a throwaway line. The comic started in the early 2000's, and early on he and Mark's dynamic consisted of a lot of 'that's gay' jokes. Accurate to teens at the time, but wouldn't fly today. The show has made a lot of little modernization choices, like making Mark half Korean, Amber black, and Rex Greek, so as to avoid having a monolithically white cast for no reason. Green Ghost was also gender flipped so War Woman, the WW stand in, wouldnt be the only woman on the Guardians.
@galacticcactus55303 жыл бұрын
Saw somebody on FB ranting about that change to Will, but to me, it makes more sense in this current world. Gay coming-out plots have been done TO DEATH by now, and aren’t as “scandalous” as they were 10+ years ago. As a bisexual myself, it’s really refreshing to just see a semi-main character already out and proud and it not be that big of a deal. Especially in a western animated series. Updates like these are sometimes necessary when you’re adapting older stories so that stuff stays relevant and doesn’t feel dated. It’s not disrespectful IF done right. (And done with the creator’s permission of course) I feel similar about Amazon’s adaptation of The Boys. While not perfect, there’s a LOT of story elements that they bring up to current times, and it’s greatly appreciated.

I read the original comic run from start to finish and it is truly one of the best comic runs in all of comic book history. They've made a few changes to update it to our current social climate but have otherwise remained very true to the original source material. So far I'm 100% loving this show!

Can I just point out that South Park, the “I don’t care and neither should you” show, did a few episodes recently about how we need to stop being apathetic about school shootings and GLOBAL WARMING of all things? I find this hilarious. Not the school shootings and climate change stuff, obviously, but the fact that Matt and Trey are trying to get a generation of people they mocked for caring to start caring again, and Ironically nobody cares about South Park enough to respond anymore.

I agree with the sentiment, but there's one important correction I would make. It's not them trying get "a generation of people they mocked for caring" to start caring, since despite it being an "adult-oriented" cartoon I've always found that the target audience of that show was really millennials. So it's more trying to get a generation which they helped raise to be apathetic by mocking anyone who cared to give a shit.

The entire comic book itself has an inside joke that lasts through out its entire run of reusing panels or art with small differences.

I think that’s. really great is what and how they’ve adapted and changed from the comic. All the little trips and changes from the source to. make it Possible for tv. The team working on it have added a lot of tiny and carefully thoughtout details that pay off or are setting up much better for characters and plot points that the comic has later on. really shows the team working on it all understand, know and care about the source of it all, especially with how certain characters develop. It’s gonna be a great adaption and can’t wait for the rest of the show!

I don't know. The reveal could have been SO much darker. Like, imagine if, instead of suddenly attacking out of nowhere, Omniman just announces to the team that he's "retiring" from being a superhero to "look after" his son (technically none of these were lies) and that he's called them so that they can celebrate his "retirement" party as a "farewell". And then he opens a door, or a curtain, and beyond is a nice table, some drinks (both alcoholic and non alcoholic), something to eat and there's those little cupcakes. So they have their little party, they drink, eat, laugh, reminisce about the old days. Overall, having a good time. And while they're all drinking and laughing, omniman goes "haaa, I'm gonna miss you guys once you're gone. Now, if you all sit still, I promise to give you all a quick and painless (as possible) death". Now the rest of the team is slightly startled by this, but they quickly brush it off as him having one too many (except he's the only one who didn't have any of the alcoholic choices) and they laugh about it (go figure, they're the ones drunk). So omniman, seeing as he's not taken seriously, rushes over to their speedster and snaps his neck. So now the battle starts and proceeds how it did in the show. What's the catch about this situation? Absolutely none. The "catch" is that there IS no catch. Omniman "genuinely" cared for this teammates and that this party and him offering the guardians a quick and painless his way of showing them gratitude and how much he cared about the time they spent together. And it shows that, despite "genuinely" caring for them (as much as a sociopath CAN "care"), he had absolutely zero qualms about killing any of them even if they were having a blast not even 5 minutes prior. He never intended to be s superhero, he always planned to conquer the planet, but they were his comrades regardless and that was his way of celebrating that. But throwing a party was also tactical play on his part, to get the other guardians to drop their guard and dull their senses enough so they aren't as difficult to deal with (just in case). And it also brings an extra layer to the character: if he can kill people he has worked with for years, his friends, at the flip of a switch without feeling any remorse, what stops him from doing the same to his family?
@Nassit-Gnuoy3 жыл бұрын
The show does establish that he was always distant from the Guardians. Plus him and Immortal looked like they never liked each other that much. I don’t think Omniman thought of them highly enough to do all that, but it’s a cool alternate idea for a scene.
@johnfraire69313 жыл бұрын
I actually disagree; despite knowing close to nothing about psychology, I'd confidently say that Omniman isn't a sociopath. (some spoilers and a bit of a wall of text) I like how in the comics and the tv show (from what I've seen of both, Volume 1 for the former and 4 episodes for the latter), neither you nor maybe even really Omniman knows what he does or doesn't care about, and even then _how_ much at that. Every time he says something in the show that's just remarkably cold about his dead comrades, I just don't think a totally-super-collected supervillain would say that if he weren't also just slightly conflicted. When he rubs his wife into believing he doesn't care about their deaths, for example, I feel like he's reassuring _himself_ that he doesn't care at all, while actually accidentally showing that he isn't anywhere near as devastated as he _should_ be. Like, he's complex, and I like that in a character. Ideologies always corrupt seemingly entirely functioning people- some anti-Latinx fucker shot up a Walmart in my city two years ago, and _shockingly_ after a psych evaluation, he's _not_ "disturbed" like the media always calls white mass murderers; he's just a fucking terrorist. He "cares too much" about an imaginary concept that drove him to kill- a thousand ideologies before him used that mentality to make people kill even their siblings, and a hundred ideologies will make others kill others with that mentality after him. In the comics, Omniman really did love his wife, and was genuine- really, _genuine_ friends with a few of the Guardians before the snap(ping of necks). And in the show he's actually torn about having to kill them; but to him, that's just a sacrifice he has to make for the betterment of the galaxy. _That_ is what makes him a truly disgusting villain; he "cares too much", as any one of us might- definable syndrome or no definable syndrome. (He's also just too machismo for a totally sick murder scene like the one you wrote, which is a shame because that would be a really enjoyable scene. I don't know why, but the media always makes it that muscles or any weight at all equals no intrigue during the drinking of wine- as a cool KZbinr sometimes says, you might not've noticed, but your brain did.) In the comics also, it's revealed by the end of Volume 1 that ideology is ᵐᶦᵍʰᵗ ᵐᵃᵏᵉˢ ʳᶦᵍʰᵗ, ᵇᵘᵗ ᵗᵒ ᵗʰᵉ ᵀʰᵃⁿᵒˢ ᵉˣᵗʳᵉᵐᵉ ᵃⁿᵈ ᵃˡˢᵒ ᵉᵘᵍᵉⁿᶦᶜˢ ᵏᶦⁿᵈᵃ. ᴬˡˢᵒ ᴵᵐᵖᵉʳᶦᵃˡᶦˢᵐ ᵃᵗ ᵗʰᵉ ᵗʰʳᵉᵃᵗ ᵒᶠ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᴿᵒᵐᵉ ᵈᶦᵈ ᵗᵒ cᵃʳᵗʰᵃᵍᵉ ᵉˣᵗʳᵉᵐᵉ. ᴵᵗ'ˢ ᵃᶜᵗᵘᵃˡˡʸ ᵃ ˡᶦᵗᵗˡᵉ ᵛᵃᵍᵘᵉ. ᴮᵘᵗ, ˡᶦᵏᵉ, ᶦᵗ'ˢ ᵉˣᵗʳᵉᵐᵉ. To him, that "truth" is what he owes his life to; and for that he pretends he hadn't made a new life on Earth completely. Even if he has, he's already committed his pawns in place, and there's no turning back.
@floricel_1123 жыл бұрын
@@johnfraire6931 I guess I just like the idea that, despite looking human, he's still an alien that comes from an entirely different society that has different values and morals, and what could be seen as sociopathic by our standards is perfectly normal behaviour by the standards of his species.

I do want to say: Rick and Morty does not paint caring about people as a weakness. That’s just what fans of the show who misinterpreted it think. The whole point of the show is that Rick is wrong. He may be awesome in many aspects but he is clearly deeply unhappy about how lonely he is. I don’t know what show you watched if you think it paints him as happy and content with the life he’s living. Morty is clearly seen as the heart of the show who through his innocence keeps Rick in check. He’s clearly shown to be the better person

SPOILERS: This theory hit me when Omni-Man tells the aliens “You don’t understand; This planet isn’t yours to conquer.” There was no eyebrow raising special inflection on the word “your” in that sentence, but I believe that was to keep the truth hidden in plain sight for future retrospect. My theory is that Omni-Man’s whole race sending out “fighters to protect planets” is actually his people sending fighters under a guise in order to help force other planets assimilate in the name of “peace”, since Omni-Man says at some point, something along the lines that humans ruin everything beautiful or something. And their methods to attain “peace” are probably super fucked up, a kinda “do whatever it takes to achieve peace” kind. Also, I can’t believe you didn’t give a lil shoutout to Damien Darkblood, Demon Detective, whose alliterative name is awe-inspiring. He’s the second Clancy Brown character I know of who is red and demonlike who resembles the actual Clancy Brown. (The first one is the Devilronian from The Mandalorian)

I love this show so far. Especially the fact that there are no purely good characters. The MC nearly murders his first real antagonist, Eve considers dropping out of the hero business because of personal drama, the other heroes constantly fight about petty things... I love it! I'm so tired of characters who are just pure little angels and literally don't have the ability to feel greed or selfishness. Also I love how hard it is to read Omniman. I can't tell if he's a loving father who was forced to kill the Guardians by the robot, completely evil murderer who uses the family as a cover and actually hacked into the robot or maybe even an alien agent who was tasked to destroy humanity, had a family on the way, but still is set in his goals. Heck, he could even be a clone of the real Omniman (guessing by the end of Ep 4).

I like the animation for this show, imo, it is ideal. I did read this when I was younger and all so I am basing this on what I had hoped it would try to do animated. The talking scenes are alot less detailed, mass waves of people are backroundy looking, and all that to me fits. When the action scenes kick in, the animation shines. During the downtime, the scenes feel more relaxed. I think it was a smart use of budget and maintaining the Invincible feel, a great thing to see brought over into animation.
