To be fair, I'd wait with saying that they returned to status quo untill the next episode because for now, we do not have concrete evidence that this is the case. Yes morty lost half of his original self. But what *exacly* does that entail is not clear. We literally only heard him speak *1 line* of dialogue after he left the game. If next week, they regress him, I will gladly admit i was wrong, but for now I will not cast my judgement.

Possible dumb hope, Morty is basically made to fully trust Rick but it turns out Rick had ended up actually relying on a more independent Morty without realizing, leading to him constantly digging himself into a bigger hole throughout the episode ending with him barley making it back to the machine where the Morty offspring left with Marta repopulated to numbers large enough to actually bring back our proper Morty with Rick needing to accept that he needs Morty to our Morty and not to one percent of him after he had years to contemplate in the game.

@@DrGandW Rick keeps running through “Vat of Acid” ideas with no Morty to slap him out of the sunk cost fallacy and not overthink it. Random theoretical example, Rick gets chased by a enemy with a Macbeth style curse where it says Rick can’t kill them, so Rick wanting to prove it wrong keeps failing to try and loophole the curse until he bring original Morty back and Morty just shoots the guy and is like “YOU can’t kill him idiot. Could’ve just handed summer a gun or something” and Rick didn’t think of that because he was obsessed with proving the curse wrong rather than simply taking the obvious rout he was blinded from seeing by arrogance and pride.

They didnt abandon mortys doubt of Rick. Theyve imprisoned it. The 8% of morty who trusts himself over rick is still in the game. Or dead that part was a little unclear but theres something in there and its clear that morty isnt all there when he comes out. Its written like a self contained story but i wouldnt mind seeing distrustful morty escape at some point. Also morty should have a few billion lives of wisdom under his belt so i hope that comes up again

I have to disagree. In my opinion this episode was an absolute classic. Your review even sounds like you’re praising the episode and just upset that it didn’t go exactly where you wanted it to go. I think its another brilliant exploration of Rick and Morty’s relationship. They worked well within the limitations of a 30 min episode. I think if this was in season 1 and you had never seen the show you’d think this was top tier. At this point I feel like Rick and Morty is a victim of its own success.

They got it back in the end but Morty was a completely healthy functioning human so they had to undo it returning the status quo...so hopefully they don't do this I'll wait for the next ep.

I see this episode as the true reason Evil Morty exists. Rick jackass-like treatment of Morty pushes him to ultimately creates the thing that will eventually be Evil Morty; who I want to be the aid to the Rickiest Rick (ultimately using him to get his revenge) And Peter Dinklage doing the tribute to Alan Rickman character in Die Hard has got to be the best early Christmas present.

Because he doesn't CARE. Because nobody's special to him Summer!" It's really interesting that Morty still kind of clings to Rick in a way, because this quote alone, along with SEVERAL actions (like shooting Rick) show that Morty HAS no illusions. He knows where he stands in the grand scheme of things. Evil Morty going "there you go kid." after Morty asked what made Rick come back, is what planted the seeds of doubt. MatPat made this theory YEARS ago, that it would be Evil Morty who would kind of instill that sense of fear and distrust in OUR Morty causing him to question Rick. We've seen what happens when Morty OUTSMARTS RICK. Rick has seen what happens when a Morty is smarter than Rick.If you think he's going to WILLINGLY let OUR Morty be anything like Evil Morty.....oh you haven't been paying attention. And THAT alone, is what's gonna bite Rick in the ass.

I think what they were going for is that even Marta trusts Rick in the end even though she doesn’t want to give up her individual identity, and Rick pays to keep her game running because he doesn’t want to completely control Morty anymore, and now respects the parts of him that rebel. I agree with you that they will return to the status quo because Morty still has other rebellious parts of himself, such as Marta’s daughter, and Rick has to tell all of Morty that he loves him for real, no irony.

Unsatisfying? This episode was fantastic. Marta gained more and more of Morty’s development/independence because of her dynamic with Roy/Rick and she’s going to be arc’d out later in the season when they come back to Blitz and Chitz to reunite her with Morty. Hence the multi-layered joke about the catalog system in the post credits scene. I dunno, man. I think you’re way off on your review of this one. They weren’t “scrambling” at the end, they were putting together a series of ideas that basically struggled with the concept they all mattered because they were Morty but spiraled because Rick/Roy wouldn’t acknowledge Morty had value (mattered). Side note, the Die Hard joke was funny because of its overuse. Summer literally said, “Call me diehard.” Come on, how do you not get that? It was a one liner they turned into an entire B-story and the fact they did it successfully speaks even further to the greatness of this episode. TLDR: Die hard. Die hard, cause die hard. Die hard!! Walkie-Talkie Die Hard Mother Fucker. . . I was trying to be funny but she seriously says this. The bad guy character questions her knowledge of the movie and she replies with, “WALKIE-TALKIE DIE HARD, MOTHERFUCKER” . . honestly the fact you strung together clips of them saying Die Hard over and over again, as if it wasn’t intentionally overplayed, only confirmed (for me at least) your misconception of the episode. What do I know though? I’m just an aging and balding 35 year old with a love for cartoons. None of this real anyway. We’re critiquing shows inside a simulation at this point. . . I don’t remember where I was going with this. Die hard.

I don't get the complaints. They've made it clear Rick and Morty is never going to be completely plot-based, the bulk of the show is always going to be exploring high concept sci-fi plots, and this was pretty fun. The ending was a little weird but the general premise is honestly really entertaining. I'm not going to stop enjoying the show and sit around and pine for heavy continuity antagonists to come back, I know they'll circle back around to the plot when they feel like it and until then I'm enjoying the ride

Eh, if they regress Morty though it’s just another layer of disappointment in the show’s disappointment lasagna. The show never wants to commit to either of the two things it’s good at, (and unlike a few other objectively much worse shows, it doesn’t even seem like it does this out of anything more than spite.) It is a good show when it wants to be. But it desperately wants to have its cake and eat it too while bitching about how much it hates cake. We don’t need to have dramatic serious episodes ever again. They’re my favorite and I love them, but the show doesn’t need those. The show needs to not undermine its own characters and allow them to keep whatever growth and change they’ve earned, and it needs to not mock the viewers for liking the way the characters grew. Like, my complaining might be for naught. We have no clue how this episode will affect Morty going forward. But I really don’t want to go back to stupid, subservient Morty. I liked the Morty that was fixing Rick’s drunken mistakes and begrudgingly defusing a bomb because he was used to this shit.

Tbh the show needs to pick one: serious epic character developing wromps or episodic adventures. It’s nauseating and frustrating, especially given the theme of nihilism, of bouncing from questioning if rick is perfect and calling his character into question, only to have everyone go back to the show agreeing everything is pointless and Rick is god without any plot progression. I don't agree. Frankly I liked the die-hard joke. But then again my sense of humor loves the deep dry wit of some comedians, but I do enjoy running a joke into the ground till its stupid. Its not everybody's cup of tea, but I can appreciate it. 2nd: have a kid. They need validation. They need to be told they are loved and valued. They are not quite capable of understanding the nuances of human emotion and expressions of love. My kids need hugs and being told I love you. Granted at least 2 years of continuity has passed in the show (based on the two christmases episodes they have gone through) and that is 2 years of growth. Just reminds me that Morty, despite placing his self-worth in Rick, still needs to hear the damn words.

And the scene with the monitors had really funny lines ("Why do I have a monitor if my opinion isn't valued?" and "I mean, even if he says it, what's with the pause?"). Everything else you said in this video, though, put into words the weird off-ness of the story that I felt while watching it. I think this episode is a combination of late season 5 and season 1. It has it’s goofy riff on a movie b plot while covering a relatively important dynamic on the relationship of Rock and Morty. Personally I found it quite entertaining. Yeah the whole saying die hard got a little annoying but was still pretty funny. Overall a pretty solid episode

I mean, he basically found out that his entire existence in any universe is to serve under Rick. Not only that, but he finds out HIS Rick abandoned him and his family, the Rick he knows now only came around because he wanted to wait for the original Rick to return. Not only that, but his entire original Dimension is completely fucked, he found out his mom and sister are dead, his father is the last survivour, and this could have all been fixed by Rick. And he knows that the only way to be free from Rick would be to do something as grand as what Evil Morty did, which is to put A HOLE IN INFINITY. So yeah, I believe when he finally got a chance to be freed from Rick and Rick couldn't force him to go with him, he wanted to stay.

In the szn 5 finale morty says "I'm not gonna keep doing this if ur not honest with me, I don't trust you" and then in the szn 6 premiere morty asks him "isn't my original rick dead? that's why you pick places" and rick has the opportunity to give him some bs but instead he just lays it out for him and tells him the truth, that they're gonna kill his OG grandpa. Rick has changed, but now it's up to morty to see that.

I honestly feel like he’s gone insane due to the amount of personalities in his head that just came back into one then him losing his development. Remember, when he first used it, it made him disoriented and confused, I wouldn’t say nothing was left there but I am say he’s definitely the same Morty but with different lifestyles blended in his memories. So, he didn’t lose his distrust for bs from Rick, but just had a tiny part of him contained somewhere else for now, possibly.

I think even though the storyline could have been pushed further, episode 2 was conceptually one of the best episodes they have released. The way you can get insight into Morty’s psychology without having the episode become overtly serialised is a tough line to walk but it was so well executed 🔥

I don't think they usually do it often but I was admittedly hoping this would have been a 2 episode plot instead of one. But that would also mean having a longer running B-plot and I don't think they could manage that.

Probably unpopular opinion but I’ve completely given up on Rick and Morty. I feel like the writers don’t know where their going, and if this was just a fun sci fi space adventure every week with a little bit of lore it would be okay; kind of what futurama did. Maybe this wasn't the original plan but I feel like show runners “advertised” an over arching story in order to get more viewers taking advantage of the fact that many people want to see more story lines in more animated series. It might not have been the plan but I felt like the show kind of admitting or revealing this was a little to late, and they do it in a back handed way- like when Rick revealed his backstory; saying maybe people will finally shut up about it. If this wasn’t their intention I can understand being frustrated with viewers demanding some story lines be told or it being the only reason it’s watched, but personally don’t put something in the plot you don’t plan on telling until five or seven years later and only doing so because of complaints. To me Rick and morty isn’t a sci fi adventure, it’s a science fiction rom com, and I wish I was told this before I became invested. It’s feels like SVTFOE in which it was started as a magical girl parody series only to hint at bigger things and made many viewers believe it was going to become a mystery adventure series only to be squashed because it was a shipping/ romance show and would rather focus on that. And the over arching possible plot line also got many new viewers and former viewers invested.

To be fair, whenever Morty does something alone he kinda fucks up big time, or gets in very bad situations, the sperm invasion, the dragon, the time the king bean wanted to touch him, talking to squirrels, the snake planet, the time he got Rick wine, the whole planetina "vessels" murder, and when he grabbed the death crystal. Yes, Rick is an ass, but, Morty does need the guidance

The Die Hard subplot isn't just a spoof of a movie you didn't see. It's also riffing on the endless iterations of spoofs, remakes, rip-offs, and stories inspired by said movie. While being aware that a huge part of the audience probably never saw the original and saying that it doesn't matter. Which is pretty awesome, actually. In the end Summer knows what to do even though she never saw the movie and defeats the villains who were way too obsessed superfans of the movie. So it's also an iteration on a common theme in Rick and Morty: people becoming too obsessed with canon and minutiae who spoil their own fun as well as that of others and turn into complete losers. Classic Summer plot.

I disagree with you the episode was AWESOME the Die Hard being a universal space mono myth is the type of mixture humor high low and pop culture reference that I adore in Rick and Morty we need to wait for episode 3 and others to know how much of Morty character development and brain power was killed in Roy. Morty is a kid, a teen he still LOVE Rick & wants validation from Rick it's just evolution that's why many kids/adults love toxic parents or partners.

Here's my theory. Rick specifically called out that one part of Morty saying who cares about them if they are only 1 one billionth of Morty, they won't make a difference. My theory is that since Morty uncharacteristically 100% followed Rick's order without any stuttering or anything with a smile on his face, Rick will come to learn that that 1 tiny little part of Morty makes the entire difference between our Morty and every other Morty there is. My theory is that Rick will end up getting that piece back in Morty as he learns to actually allow himself to truely love someone else again after losing Diane

I think the Die Hard b plot fucked up it's premise pretty early too. Like you said, just repeating the word Die Hard gets old fast, but I thought it was kind of interesting the idea that all alien civilizations have an equivalent myth/movie would have been a funny bit to explore. Summer should have told him Alan Rickman died in real life and the guy should have gotten bummed out for a bit.

I think the episode was good. It felt like Season 2 where sci-fi shenanginans happens alongside some sweet character arcs. Besides the die hard jokes and the religion, I adored the whole idea of Morty as fractions of the billion NPCs and how he still doubts Rick's trust over him. Their relationship is, admittedly, codependent despite their tries of getting back together. The fact there's a part of him that addressed his distrust towards him is surprising, and I loved every second of that plotline. Also, I do think that the character regression might be intentional for future episodes, since Rick was the focus of character development. They even pointed it out on the end scene about Marta still being alive by Rick, so of course she'll likely come back.

It seems like they teased that this is going to be picked up somewhere later on during the series perhaps the origin of evil Morty? Is that why our current Morty has been suspiciously loyal throughout season 5? They said that Roy’s game won’t restart and I don’t think she’s dead so where’s Martha? MARTHA

It seems that you missed the general premise that ROY the game itself is it’s own time dilated universe that travels years to the real worlds minutes, that being the point of the long jumps of time “cutting the story” that you don’t see because the cuts to summer are significantly longer pieces of time in the game.

Rick is trying his best to prevent morty from not loving him trying to deny the fact that he is a evil person. He always does things over and over again proving hes not the bad person, everyone else is. Which makes him extremely self centered and self righteous. over and over again we see this.

I think the episode is more focused on morty than the relationship. As you said, his arc felt uncomplete but once you consider morty being able to persuade or change rick... well sure he may not say it outright but he does SHOW it to some degree, doesn't that complete his role? I can relate and even sympathize morty for trying to help a family member out but eventually, you'll realize that what you're doing is a big endeavor, but its an act that he is willing to take. Morty is just realizing how he is exhausted with everything that he himself contemplates if weather what he wanted was even worth it in the end. The only realization that he has is that, its his choice. He still wants to help out Rick and his family but he probably realize that his selfishness could just hinder everything that he had progress so far that the only compromise that morty has in the end is to left some part of him wandering in the void and let his more submissive part of him to still help out Rick. So in a way, the morty that we may have known, could have his entire character arc subtly ended without downright saying it. Thats my take but hey, its up to the writers, like I knew that having your characters progress is somewhat a taboo cause that would limit the type of plots that they could write. Probably the compromise the writers have is to just split them into 2 literal entities.
