I'm watching The Idol before listening to the discussion. I just finished Episode 1 and kind of loved it? Great tone, excellent sound design, incredibly well shot, solid performances, wry sense of humor, scathing deconstruction of Hollywood culture. Like some alternate universe where Showgirls didn't actually suck. I gave it a 9/10 on IMDb. I'm thinking two things: 1. Does this thing go off the rails and fall apart after the series premiere? 2. Am I losing my mind and my standards? Also haven't seen Oldboy (2003), only the remake [which I hated], so looking forward to that after The Idol.

Just finished it. I really enjoyed the first half of the show for all the reasons I listed above. As the plot twists unfolded, I found myself wondering what all the great cinematography, music, acting and direction were serving. Character arcs didn't add up at all, dialogue was wildly inconsistent, ranging from excellent to terrible in a single scene, and the pacing was all over the place. By the time the final episode ended, I wondered to myself, "what the hell is this show trying to say?" - That being said, Depp is a revelation here, Eli Roth was superb, Hank Azaria was great as usual, really the entire cast. Even The Weeknd played his Andrew Tate burnout role effectively. Too bad the show was so disjointed and unfocused. I will admit the sleaze could've been toned back by like 30%, but I didn't find the show exploitative or immoral or anything. I'd give it a 6/10 for sheer filmcraft alone. I'm glad I watched it and I loved a lot about it, but the narrative and some of the dialogue kept this from a real recommendation for me. It's much better than the critics are saying though. Looking forward to hearing the sards talk about it, a lot to chew on for sure.@@franklinlopez2652

The Idol is the most insane set of random ideas that aren’t fully developed that I would expect a writer to come up with on a weekend bender and then after they’re sobered up you would expect them to eventually flesh them out over the course of like a period of time but they just said “fuck it” and shot it and released it.
