"Disastrous filmmaking" is a moniker applied to plenty of overbudget films, and Waterworld is one of those stories that's legendary in the industry. So what the hell went wrong with this project? Well, we need to rewind the clock to 1986, when writer Peter Rader came up with a Mad Max knockoff for Roger Corman to produce. When he pitched it, Corman rejected it, saying how $5 million was way too much to make their film off of. Undeterred, Rader went about developing the screenplay, with it landing on The Gordon Company's doorstep in 1989. They teamed up with Universal Pictures for distribution, estimating their budget for $30 million. Kevin Reynolds was hired to direct, seeing as he helmed 1991's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves to huge success. However, the studio also wanted Kevin Costner to star in the picture, which Reynolds wasn't keen on. See, whilst he and Kevin had a working relationship from Fandango (Where Costner got his start) to Robin Hood, the two were starting to feud, mainly because of artistic differences. But they patched things up for the now $65 million picture that was finally in production. Keep in mind, $30 million had already been spent on the preproduction, without any scenes being shot and only a director, star and multiple rewrites to its name. Production designer Dennis Gassner had picked Kawaihae Harbour in Hawaii as the film's primary shooting location. What he didn't know was why it was called "Kawaihae Harbour". When translated into English, "Kawaihae" means "rough waters" in Hawaiian, which signalled how turbulent the weather conditions were during production. Even Steven Spielberg warned Reynolds and Costner not to film out in the ocean, owing to his own experiences directing Jaws. Sets were wrecked because of the unpredictable weather (Namely hurricanes), the cast and crew suffered sea sickness and jellyfish bites, whilst stuntpeople suffered life-threatening injuries out in the ocean (Costner himself almost died when he got caught in a squall while tied to the mast of his trimaran). Not to mention, they overlooked an important component: no bathrooms. Because of this, people had to be ferried from the middle of the ocean to the shore just to take a dump, delaying the film shoot. Then there were the expenses that occurred, which included: - Costner's private yacht that was bought for him to bring him to "set". - Union penalties for staff food breaks that were always late. - Raising the man-made atoll that sank. - Accommodating the cast and crew for the night, with Costner's costing $1,800 a night. All told, it ballooned the budget to $175 million, with filming taking 166 days in total (To put this into perspective, Top Gun only took 100 days to shoot). During post-production, Universal proved unhappy with Reynold's initial cut, demanding he take out the darker aspects of the story. Costner stepped in with Universal's approval (After he agreed to relinquish his contractual agreement for back-end profits) trying to restore much of what Reynolds was forced to delete, refusing to add the "happy ending" that the studios wanted. Once Reynolds heard of this, he was embarrassed and angry about losing control, finally quitting the project and stating: _"In future, Costner should direct all his own movies. That way, he can work with his favorite director and his favorite actor."_ - Fiasco: A History of Hollywood's Iconic Flops Once it came time for test screenings, the scores weren't good. Audiences didn't like the inclusion of CGI sharks and the slow-paced, meandering storyline. So they went back to edit the picture, shot some additional footage (Weeks before release), and Costner asked for his thinning hairline to be touched up with digital hair. By 1995, the film was released to cinemas. Whilst it did make back its budget, it wasn't the profit maker Universal set out to achieve. Granted, it did do better internationally and eventually made a profit on home video and television sales, but it wasn't enough to shake the "Fishtar" and "Kevin's Gate" nicknames that the film earned. Kevin himself didn't learn anything during his time making Waterworld, seeing as he went on to direct the 3hr snorefest "The Postman", which was also a bomb yet somehow cost less and had the studio backing Kevin's creative decisions all the way (Even refusing to trim down the 3hr run time).
@mabusestestament10 ай бұрын
Yeah Waterworld was actually pretty successful, it just got so ridiculously out of comtrol expensive that it was really hard to make back its budget. But I quite like it, even though on the one hand it is just Mad Max on water, on the other hand it’s also very unique because it only could’ve been made back then; nowadays they would do everything with cgi while the whole ‘point’ of Waterworld is that they actually shot the thing at sea and the water is real and you sure see that on screen.
@Fortress710 ай бұрын
Interesting. As a commercial fisherman I love the movie for the sets and aesthetic, not for the plot. But also...why didn't they just use a shit bucket? That's what we do on fishing boats. Pour a little water in the bottom, sit on the bucket and do your business, toss it over the side, then rinse the bucket. Any able bodied person who made the whole production stop just to poop on land is an embarrassment to humans as a species.
@Yixdy10 ай бұрын
@@Fortress7 hmm, would the turds not just float around? Especially with like dozens and dozens of cast and crew taking at least one to a (hopefully) unrealistic maximum of 3 shits in a 12 or whatever hour shoot? Can that much crap be swallowed up by the ocean if you're only filming in the one spot?
@oobndroobw10 ай бұрын
What’s weird about the academy’s problem with the editing category is that the nominees are decided by the editing branch. I could understand why the total voting body would not know how to judge editing, but you’d think other editors would be better at picking nominees.

12:00 I would say that only biggest winner for the "Best Picture" will be Oppenheimer so it might win for the Oscars. My best film I actually the most is "Poor Things" a great Lathimo's weird and art crafted Frankenstein movie, The Holdovers is a great holiday small group movie, Past Lives is an emotion coming-to-an age love story with separate connections, and Oppenheimer is Nolan's longest biopic story of a man who made atomic bombs and deepen for his back story of his inventions and lives of working other people. Well, depends for what it is.

Why is Adum so insistent on pointing out the number of seats in the Oscars hall when discussing why the Oscars only have 5 slots each for nominations?! The reason it is 5 and not an endless number of slots is to try and make a nomination feel like something. If the Oscars had 20 best director nominations, nobody would care if they get nominated. Exclusivity is part of the prestige.
@mabusestestament10 ай бұрын
Yeah it should remain 5. I already think it is dumb there are 10 best movie noms because it devalues the whole thing. You can easily scrap half of these for not having a real chance anyway against some of the actual front runners. If they insist on having more than 5 best picture noms then fine make it 7, but 10 is just dumb.
@michaelangelo219210 ай бұрын
@@mabusestestament Yh I don't personally mind 10 nominations just for best picture (I think it brings needed attention to films like The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall for example that perhaps may not have made it in a year of 5). But I agree with the sentiment on the whole; it would be better for them to change it to 5 if the alternative was changing it to say, 15. 5 for all of the rest of the categories is the correct way to go.
@Wraiven2210 ай бұрын
