The second the Northman ended, the guy in the row in front of me loudly goes “CRAP, that was CRAP” and then got up revealing that he brought his kids that looked about 10 and 8. Pretty impressive how in 5 seconds he got me to think about him the whole drive home instead of the actual movie

I like how Eggers isn’t afraid to portray historical depictions of people who are almost completely alien to a modern audience. Also how his stories take place from the perspective of the people in them. In the Witch satanic witchcraft going on the woods is real because the people back then believed it was. In the Northman Valhalla is real because the main character truly believes it due to the culture he was raised in.

I agree with Ralph, one of the main reasons for the Netflix stock plummet is the fact that there’s so much awful content on there, to the point where there’s nothing of value even to the average viewer. It’s like they just shit out content, and every once in a while a good show or movie comes out of it, but gets buried by that mountain of shit

Adam is actually completely wrong about the choreography of the fight scenes. Traditional sword fighting is very slow and calculated, if anything the fighting in The Northman is too fast to be "realistic". Either way I personally loved the action, and was glad that they didn't overdo the fighting, it fit well with the period-piece aesthetic of the film

I've only done kendo and sports fencing so it's not really the same as HEMA. But generally speaking real fencing probably isn't that interesting to look at for a layman. The distance measuring and provoking isn't that interesting to look at, but when someone sees a chance the series of movements happen too fast to follow for a less experienced spectator.

The IMDb listing for Shark Tale isn't wrong; you just watched the Australian dub - probably also accounts for the lazy Blu-Ray menu. For a couple of characters, they changed the voice actors to local celebrities (they also did this for the UK version), which is weird and illogical, as they neglected to alter the unfunny 'punny' names - so not only were they being incredibly cringey, they've topped it off with a dollop of extra stupid.

The German title of "Shark Tale" translates to "Small Fish, Big Sharks", which is a pretty good title, I'd say, as it actually sounds like a mob movie. As far as I remember, the dub is actually funny too, for all the horrible dialogue, reference humor and puns don't even really translate in the first place and they had to do something else and got creative. I'm never surprised by how Adum will gush over Jodorowsky, yet gripe about the ending of The Northman or symbolism/mysticism when it's used in other films... HE'S VERY BIASED!!!!!! I'll admit that I seem to have a thing for Egger's films, however it's hilarious that he praises so many Hispanic directors over Brit or American directors ALL THE TIME!! The Revenant was fine... but it wasn't extraordinary in ANY way. The Northman felt a lot more unique compared to The Revenant, and was a more satisfying movie-watching experience.

@@giorgiopayne2875 Leonardo was perfectly cast and produced one of his best performances in his career. The wide lens was fantastic, and added depth to a already beautiful film. The wife lens also helped keep the intense usage of close shots interesting, and it added a unique perspective when it was matched with the naturalistic lighting. The film relies heavily on the sun for lighting, so it just makes it all the more impressive. It’s a fantastic film. The northman was very good, but had some of the dumbest twists I’ve ever seen, inconsistent action, a dumb climax, and weird dialogue.

As someone pretty well versed in norse mythology, i think the burp and fart stuff in the northman, is sorta to keep the spirit of it, alot of this mythos is sorta crass like that. There are tales of odin turning into a bird and shitting in a mead tub and stuff. I think it's a sorta neat touch and not only left in for comedy sake.

I felt the humor in the Northman was very welcome because I think it is quite easy for an "epic" like this to feel very self-serious, when many aspects of that kind of story are overly dramatic, and therefore come off as a bit ridiculous. The humor therefore seemed to me as a kind of acknowledgement of this fact, in a "I know it's kind of ridiculous, but just bear with me guys." in a very similar way to the Lighthouse.

the fights felt kind of game of thronesy at point where you can kinda tell where there would be a wire pulling someone or some actor waiting for their cue in a fight, but it didn’t detract from the scenes for me, just like in game thrones, where the spectacle and scale of the battle outweighs the choreography

Oscar from Shark Tale literally has an entry on the Loathsome Characters Wiki: “His design is unintentionally hideous and it looks like his voice actor was Photoshop, mainly by his face. Not to mention that he doesn't look that much like an actual Bluestreak cleaner wrasse and possibly he might have the ugliest design ever put into a fish character. And even though many characters in Shark Tale had this consistent flaw, Oscar is mainly the ugliest out of the many. Also, the expressions he makes are uncanny and come off as nightmarish to viewers.” Fact.
