The National Forest remains closed and its looking like I'll have to be camping in the hottest part of the year by the time it re-opens. So, I continue with my hot weather preparations by finishing out my Early 20th Century Hot Weather Sleep/Shelter system. We'll be making a waterproof sleeping pad for trekking.

I have used gesso ( jesso ) in restoring an old house on North Main Street in Houston , it was used to cover the walls with the same method you were using. The original wall covering that had been damaged was there since the 1930's . It lasts a long time! Thank you for the video. I will be talking with you on the Guild... This would be great for a discussion there.

I kind of assume that folks on the guild are watching the videos and do look forward to discussing over there. I just got a 1929 Western Auto catalog that has a mattress similar to this one. I had seen it long ago and this is made as I remember it. Now that I have one, I'll be doing a closer reproduction, but the construction methods are pretty much the same.

Gesso has been used for centuries by artists to prime canvases. ON TO THE VIDEO: I enjoyed and learned from you about how and why a day's hiking/camping should be scheduled. This made more sense than I had ever come to on my own in my many years of living and thinking about woodcraft.

There's an old military adage: "Don't prepare for what you think the enemy might do. Prepare for what he is capable of and then you'll be prepared for anything he might do." With just a bit of tweaking, we can extend that mode of thinking to our camping/hiking planning. In this case, the enemy is the climate. Sometimes its terrain.

@@sargevining Sometimes it is big or persistent animals scavenging for leftovers. I found a classic story in the diary of an Appalachian Mountain Camp: 'Young Porky Dies in Climbing Accident." For sure they are insistent in their search for salty foods. It takes a sturdy mallet to permanently discourage them. I mention this here because you and I know this territory well.

I was actually a bit surprised by how much strength is imparted to the fabric using the gesso and enamel paint. I think it could be made lighter by using a slighter fabric than the 5 oz canvas I used. I'm going to try muslin on an upcoming project. I found a paper copy of the Western Auto catalog that gave me the idea and am looking to make a more exact reproduction of their offering. Thanks for watching!

Very good video. If you know some one who likes to have picnics with picnic tables the enamel cloth makes excellent tablecloth gifts. Compare it to the stuff sold today that hardly lasts one time and has to be fastened down, it's night and day difference. Use a lighter color and if you want to get a bit fancier buy a stencil or two paint some decorations on it. Wiped down and either folded or rolled it will last a long time.

I have nothing to prove it, but it seems to me that enameled cloth for table covering is making something of a comeback. There are several restaurants in the neighborhood that are using enameled cloth on all of their tables. I came across many websites selling "oilcloth" tablecloths in my research for this video. The does make it a bit confusing for folks (like me) who associate "oil cloth" with something completely different. I will be making another ground cover that more closely matches the one in the 1929 Western Auto catalog that this is based on, as well as some waterproof stuff sacks that I will be putting up for sale n VICO Expedition Outfitters.

Sarge I have a bit of an upgrade to your process that might make it easier.instead of putting any kind of holes in your waterproof material, lay out your mattress ticking upside down, put your batting on top of it, then button tuft the batting to the ticking, then stitch the back and front together and pull out to the right side out and seal up the last seam no chance of wicking possible at all

My design came from a distant memory of a listing in an early Western Auto catalog that I had seen online somewhere a couple years ago and couldn't find, so I went with what I remembered. I found a hard copy of the 1929 Western Auto Catalog that had the mattress I was trying to remember and got it in the mail the same day I released this video. From what I can discern by a black and white wood cut less than an inch high, the original was made exactly as you're describing. The only change I'd make to your design is that, since I'm using a synthetic filling that resembles kapok, I'd need to sew a lightweight inner shell to hold the material in before tufting. Its a pretty cool design in that the mattress is 48 x 86 (they call it a "double") and the waterproof component is about 6" wider on both sides and the top and folded over to trap the mattress "bag" and allow one to fold the cover over the edges before rolling to make a water tight roll. I'll be making one in a few weeks as soon as I can source the buckle hardware. Wish YT would let me post pics in comments---

Recently found your channel. Find it very interesting and instructive. I’m old enough to remember Western Auto, TG&Y, K&B and soda fountains within the pharmacy. 🫤 This sleeping/shelter system is great. It looks like if bind the bedding, there would be quite a bit of room in the pack for other items. Appreciate

TG & Y. Now there's a name I haven't heard in a while, and I spent a lot of time in those aisles. And yah, I'd be yanking on my Mother's arm every time we passed the lunch counter at Woolworths to see if I could get her to buy us a shake. I'm in the process of shooting a video of making a pack for this sleep system using Warren Miller's Army Style Pack as a guide. Yes, binding up the bedding does make a big difference.
