Continuing our series in the Sportsman's Workshop on gear for camping and trekking in hot humid environments, we're going to make a pre-filter for the most important task you'll during those adventures: water purification for hydration.

I paid $30 for a millbank bag. Next time I will make my own. Thanks for the nice video.

The beauty of making your own gear is saving money making something that fits your needs better than what's on the shelf.

I remember reading about guys in Vietnam disolving chewable vitamin C tablets in their canteens to cover the chemical flavor. Older guys said they used Lifesavers. The chemical treatment didn't always work. Merrills Marauders only used the army supplied Halazone tablets and got dysentery really bad but the Chinese soldiers camped next to them boiled their water and had no problems. It does puzzle me a bit because my father used them in the island campaigns with no problems. Either they didn't use enough or had a bad batch. The point is boiling worked. A bandana is better than nothing for particulates and no man or woman would have been without at least a handkerchief in those early days.

Orange flavored baby aspirin does the same thing with the added benefit of the pain killer. Halazone tastes like you just chewed a tube of Ben Gay. I suspect most reports of failure to prevent was due more to using less than recommended to reduce the "flavor impact" than anything else. But you're right, boiling is the most effective method. But even if you're using a modern filter, you need to pre-filter. I use short nylons with my Sawyer. You're right about the bandana too. There's about a thousand uses for a bandana. I'm never without one when on the field.

The old school iodine tablets will cover a lot but they won't kill giarda, which is the #1 cause of the runs. Either heat or chlorine treatments will.

Should add that chlorine treatments take around four hours at the correct dosage to kill giarda effectively.

Another fine project. The added benefit is guys can work on their sewing skills (if the wife will let them anywhere near the machine.)

Something simple that you can use in the field, those are the best projects. Getting ready to up the challenge level a bit and make a pack. Gathering the notions now, will start cutting next week.

Wow! Did not know about the two year Sam Houston National Forest closure order. Mind boggling that they couldn't/wouldn't use ongoing road/trail/etc maintenance for all this time.

Yah, they slapped the two year thing on to keep people from going places they haven't had time to check yet or have checked and are too damaged to use. They've kind of triaged the whole forest and are opening up sites slowly concentrating on the most used and important infrastructure. A good deal of headway has been made, but all trailheads remain closed. I'm waiting on FS213 (the road in front of TH #8 where we would park for the Butt Bakes) being opened as one of the dispersed campsites there is where I do most of my video shoots. At my age I need some place that has enough room to set up tents and stuff, that is close enough to the Big Steel Tent that I don't have to schlep the camera gear too far, and isn't next to another campsite with screaming kids. But they've already opened Stubblefield and Double Lake campgrounds (except the swimming until they get the water quality reports), and dispersed camping at Kelly Pond and Paluka Point, both of which see too much traffic to be a decent place for my kind of thing. A lot of trees came down and a lot of creek bridges and trail ladders are now in the Gulf of Mexico. Trail Maintenance is going to be a gold plated beotch.

Make the bag conical and capilary action will carry water to the bottom point.

Gravity is the main function in place here. The bag "leaks" due to capillary action. Make it conical or diagonal will increase the surface area of the "leak" and will aid in directionality. But since I've made this specifically to fill a canteen cup, I really don't need any help with directionality as long as I don't make it wider than the canteen cup. Thanks for watching!

👍 Darn you Sarge! Now I have to throw away my millbank bag and buy some linen and canvas linen. I was formerly known as “Meaningless Endeavors”.

This does have the advantage of two layers of fabric, one a tighter weave than the other, so should catch more bad woojum.
