Honestly a woman wearing a suit is not my cup of tea and a bespoke dress can also be a sartorial masterpiece. But this is just my personal opinion following my own taste. But there is something much more important to this video and this channel: did anybody notice that there are no hate comments in the comments section ? That is so very special on an internet platform. Which leads to only 1 conclusion: if the most important attribute of a gentleman (and a lady) is to make everybody in his enviroment feel comfortable and at ease - and I truly believe this is the No. 1 character - than Ms Sonya and Mr Hugo are simply epitomzing this in the most charming way.

Hardy: If you look at her suit, shirt specifically, the cut is very feminine. the fluffed tie. A take from the early woman's suffrage movement. So it's all about how you look at it.

It would be so cool if this channel would dedicate an episode on Spanish suiting style and men's clothes in general. The Spanish style, somewhere between British and American style is just as awesome but sadly not well known. remember that many famous designers (Balenciaga, Francisco Rabaneda aka "Paco Rabanne", Fortuny and many others)were "sastres" before becoming famous in France or Italy. these are the guys that invented the term "haute couture " (from the Spanish term "alta costura"...meaning the highest art form of sewing). I love your channel and i just subbed! What an awesome job you do!
@sonyaglyn70356 жыл бұрын
Hey Gil and thanks for the comment. It's widely believed that London starting the entire sartorial movement for the simplified suit (with Beau Brummell), after which, other countries studied English crafting and eventually put their own spin on style elements of the suit. You're right though--it's high time we included information on how the Spanish interpret the suit. ~Sonya

Hi Gil, one of the most stylish men I ever met was out walking with his wife and young family in Playa D'Aro. He wore perfectly matching, superbly cut linen trousers, a yellow shirt and matching suede shoes. Casual but immaculate.

Haute couture is French for haute couture. It's French people that invented and spread the concept. That's why the name is in French and used in its French form worldwide. I'll be interested in Spanish sartorial style.

Simply wonderful. You are so right about getting lost in yourself, there is a thin line between taking pride in ones appearance and coming off as overly confident. If you just try to be yourself, that’s always a good balance in my view. A true gentlemen doesn’t need to work in overdrive all the time. It should be effortlessly natural.
@SARTORIALTALKS6 жыл бұрын
Yes Josh, this effortless elegance is also called nonchalance. Some people have it naturally (Gary Cooper being the epitome of nonchalance) and some people have to work hard to acquire it (Fred Astaire was anything but nonchalant, but ended being extremely elegant). Cheers, Hugo & Sonya

As your inner beauty shines to form the beautiful person you are, my lady, I find the beauty from within that gets reflected on the facade of the person is what makes them appear in what we call "gentlemen and ladies". All what you truly mentioned I can summon up in "Honor", its the essential and most profound attribute that all the amazing attributes that forms what we describe as a "gentleman" are derived from. People have forgotten how to look honorable and dignified, the focus recently has been on how to look "hot and sexy", which in the vast majority comes across as vulgar. In my opinion: Honor is the source what drives people to "do the right thing", being proud yet humble, being courageous but not insane, being confidant but not vain. Behaving and looking honorable are things that the vast majority of people have forgotten this concept and way of life. All the beautiful facade we may see in a person, very rapidly fades away in our eyes the minute we discover that under all this beautiful exterior exists an ugly person. There is a term which is being used recently among youngsters to describe that, which I will refrain from using, however, the most amazing attire would be merely a decoration, if there is nothing under it to substantiation it. There is an old saying that goes like: "People receive you based on what you wear, and say goodbye to you based on your mind and heart". It is of paramount importance that our inner beauty is a reflected and complemented by what we wear, which also reflects whom we are. In the center of all of this, I remain myself mindful to the fact that there is also a financial element attached to getting the right attire that people with beautiful minds and hearts may not always be able to acquire, or those who are very focused in life on the things that they do and produce but not what they were because their minds are entirely focused on their mission. Hence, I always keep an open mind when meeting new people since it's the mind and the heart that are the main foundations for me to call someone a gentleman/ lady or a cad.

Sonya epitomizes a more compelling argument in favor of bespoke suiting. Sonya is a woman of style and beauty, but I couldn’t help but notice how nicely her vest conformed to her bodice without looking stretched or draped. This is the compelling argument. No matter your shape, a quality tailor will be able to showcase the most attractive you and simultaneously mask any flaws; a “trompe l’oeil” effect. If you also appreciate the cut and fit of Sonya’s vest, you know of what I speak. Bravo!

A very eye-opening video. I've always believed that you should wear what is you, as a form of open dialogue. But not being afraid to discover yourself in the form of experimenting with clothing can be fun and rewarding, instead of just stepping out of your comfort zone. Nicholson mentions the "pantsuit" from a feminine point of view. Notice that whilst she wears a pale green necktie, the collar is not actually "buttoned-up", so that a very subtle adjustment can be made - without making it seem so obvious. Very courageous, but also very classy.

Great comments. Challenge is exchanging and opening up for people like me who are introverts. I once had a person opened up to me that people thought I was snobbish because I kept to myself at social gatherings. Hurt badly because I am not a person who socializes easily with people I don’t know- quite unlike my wife. However I do believe in being in being properly dressed. As an American we have become very badly dressed. Recently I attended a funeral for friends mother. People showed up in jeans and collarless shirts. I was appalled- other than my friend and I not one suit. OBTW part of my background is Catholic school in the 60s. Coat and ties every day.

One of the things I like most about finding an excellent vintage suit is it's story. Who owned it, what's it's been through, who created it, how long it's survived.... Even little markings of wear are interesting. Until I get to a place in my life where bespoke is a viable option. I'll always choose vintage for this reason. I could go MTM. it's just not nearly as interesting to me.

When I wear structured clothing, I feel a sense of safety, purpose, and support - even if it’s not ‘comfortable’ in the ways most Americans mean when they use the word. Even if it’s genuinely restrictive. I actually enjoy a piece of clothing now and again that shapes the way I move in the world. It helps me orchestrate myself properly. And it’s something I remain intensely sensitive to, since most of my more feminine staples are full, flowing fabrics that provide that contrasting, freeing feeling.

Hi and I think Hugo could have written the same response in terms of placing a quality structured garment and respecting 'the purpose' of wearing a suit' over the simple issue of comfort. Thanks so much for commenting, ~Sonya
