I am still flabergasted each time I watch your videos you have literally opened a new world for me. you are such a pleasure to listen to, you have such a huge culture on the sartorial topic and you always are so humble gentle and elegant. It is such a shame this video only has 44000 views. The Gingko was my first pair of upscale shoes/boots as well. The same color as shown here except with canvas collar as opposed to suede. I purchased them around '97-ish in NYC. I've worn them through many New England winters and this year I will send them to be resoled. The condition of the uppers you say? Perfect patina because of annual Saphir moisturizer and chestnut cream from time to time. Hugo is 100% right when he notes they are "indestructible".

As an Englishman living in France , I’m always pleased when one of your countrymen comments,favourably on the shoes I’m wearing. I was born in Kettering, and had family in the shoe industry so was brought up to appreciate good footwear. Just like yourself, I bought my first decent pair of r t w shoes in the late 80s.I too opted for the Church’s tan Grafton Bookbinder brogue on the 73 last.In my eyes the most beautiful shoe ,which also ages gracefully. As a footnote ( no pun intended) I was very disappointed when Church’s was bought out by a fashion house and to cut costs now only produces the Grafton on the 100 last !

Dear Shaun, thank you so much for your contribution. Oddly enough, when I was a teenager my school had an exchange agreement with Kettering... So the first trip of my life outside France was in Kettering when I was 14 years old! I also visited the magnificent factory of Gaziano & Girling in this town a few years ago. I agree with you concerning Church's. Prada buying Church's seemed so bizarre, almost counter natural... Cheers, Hugo

I really enjoy watching your episodes, I always save them for Saturday afternoon and relax watching them with a hot coffee and a cigar. I thought I was the only one obsessed about not damaging the soles 😄. What I do is always take new shoes to a cobbler and add thin vibram inserts on the sole. Not a very elegant solution but to my eyes neither is a scuffed and damaged leather sole. Plus I never have to resole them at usually big costs, when the insert gets damaged I simply replace it

What shoe styles and brands would you recommend for casual wear, going to the beach, on weekends, etc.? I have been considering a slipper style such as the loafer, or boat shoes, though from what I’ve seen boat shoes seem a little gimmicky. I recently spent three weeks in Italy and slipper style shoes are very popular there. In fact, I bought my first pair of casual leather shoes while in Florence, and ever since I have become quite interested in quality, stylish clothing. Your videos have most definitely helped me understand the technicalities of the world of men’s fashion and inspired me to research which styles I am fond of. On a side note, are there any good shoe and suit manufacturers that you know of based out of Australia? Most I have seen are based out of Europe and shipping costs are often very high.
@SARTORIALTALKS5 жыл бұрын
Dear Barnabas, Australia is indeed quite far and the local production is not very developed (to say the least). For casual style I would recommend "Belgian Loafers", very casual but chic at the same time. Companies like Velasca (shoes) or Spier & Mackay (affordable ready-to-wear suits and jackets) do ship to Australia. Best, Hugo
@barnabasjuhasz5 жыл бұрын
SARTORIAL TALKS Thank you for your reply! I have just realised that I wrote Oxford in my original comment as opposed to Loafer. As for the Belgian Loafers you have recommended, they are a style that I have not seen before and I really appreciate the clean lines. I will definitely take a look at them in more detail. Thank you greatly for your manufacturer recommendations as well. You mentioned Spier and Mackay in your value suit brand video, and I have had a positive impression from their website, and I will research Velasca more. I wish you all the best. - Barnabas

I got a good made to measure suit from Oliver Wicks. They do pleats. Affordable is a relative term though. I have also found good deals on second hand suits on ebay. If you know your measurements and have a good tailor, that can be a good way to get a quality well fitting suit affordably. It takes some investment of time though. Make sure the jacket shoulders fit and its the correct length of jacket. Trousers can be taken in or let out a bit and the legs shortened. Good luck.

WOW I LOVE ALL OF YOUR FIRST 10 PAIR OF SHOES

Great collection so far! My grail and first one was also Berluti Alessandro. I think there are now maybe four different Alessandros out there. I chose Alessandro Eclair because they were only ones with gooldyear welt. They are beautiful shoes. My next ones may be Crockett and Jones or Gazziano Girlings.

C&J are great, G&G are fabulous. Tough choice, but personally I would go for G&G. Best, Hugo

I love the passion with which you talk about clothes and shoes, Hugo. It is also a very human story about starting at a lower budget and trying to progress further up the quality ladder. Do you use autocue when you narrate your videos?

No I don't Russ. Nothing's written. Just the list of the shoes. Cheers! Hugo

SARTORIAL TALKS Well I’m extremely impressed, Hugo. If you are doing that fascinating presentation without any prompts, that is true passion!

I just ordered some Di Bianco V-Front plain-toe bluchers in black with a waisted rubber sole. Basically, stylish sensible shoes. I learned about V-fronts from this video. 🙂

Very, very interesting indeed thank you Hugo, and delivered with such passion! If you're an aspiring shoe lover like me, I reckon this video will make you think long and hard about the state of your own shoe collection as you ponder a few new acquisitions I suspect?!

Very nice collection, I’d have liked to have seen you hold them and show them off though rather than just a quick picture but I suppose I should be grateful of you sharing them anyways!

Dear Ryan, I would have loved to do this of course. But our production team is in the USA and my shoe collection is in France... Can you imagine the price of the additional luggage !! Cheers, Hugo

Hi Sonya. Could you explain the different between goodyear welted and hand welted. Thanks
@SARTORIALTALKS4 жыл бұрын
Hi, A hand welted shoe indeed is often "Goodyear welted" -- done entirely by hand. Many shoe lovers crave hand welted shoes. More commonly, Goodyear welting is done with a bench made machine (some of these machines are considered antiques because they continue to work well). So, we are talking about Goodyear welting either done by hand or machine. Cheers, Sonya

3:57 I exactly understand I still have shoes that I only wore indoors just not to damage the sole 😂😂. If it is raining or going to rain only certain shoes are the ones to wear.

I love listening to stories like this; told by someone who has already walked the journey....I am still young; but was fortunate to purchase my first pair of Cheaney shoes (UK)...and oh my...have they set a new bar for me!
