As well, the evidence of her taste and style is right on the videos. The house has been decorated in a lovely French style (not my taste but one look and you go, 'French stylish') which is amazing considering the lady is from Georgia, USA. He is happy, she is happy, ... be happy for them and appreciate the great sartorial advice! For formal family events like weddings and funerals I wear my Scottish clan tartan tie on a black shirt with a black suit and black pants with black socks. However, I love his ideas of using the one blue suit (or whatever colour would best suit you - I look horrible in Navy, for example) with different shirts, ties and accoutrements.

Fantastic video. I think a blue suit really illustrates how overlooked a blue shirt can be too, you make a great point about the contrast of a white shirt that can sometimes be visually uncomfortable (in certain circumstances of course!) and definitely has me reconsidering always going for a white shirt in a more sophisticated ensemble.

Haha, thanks for your insight Hugo, I always thought medallions and bold patterns were more casual because in America most ties are solid or striped, if they wear ties at all. When I would have important business meetings I usually would go solid tie or striped tie with a white pocket square, I think medallion and bold geometric ties became associated with wall street and the mafia in the US, I also think they can intimidate people a little bit out here because most struggle with basic ties in America so when you show up in a 7 fold medallion tie with a perfectly coordinated pocket square and most haven't even cut out the front pocket of their jacket, they feel pressure. Women love the patterned ties but it can scare the guys a little bit, I always have to let people know I just love suits and would even wear them as a poor man and they relax.

People are usually uncomfortable with pretense - someone pretending to be someone they're not. I've found that so long as you genuinely enjoy and are comfortable dressing a certain way and, as Cary Grant put it, aren't wearing anything dirty or shocking, people will be fine with how you choose to dress. I often wear three-piece suits, pocket squares, dress hats, the whole nine yards, and I've found people to be rather receptive to my style. The internet hypes up the supposed judgementalism of everyday people.
@caesarortega52492 жыл бұрын
@@themoderndandy713 I can definitely see that. I don't think I've had anyone give me vibes that I was insincere, I just come from a place where only politicians wear suits often (New Mexico, now I live in Phoenix AZ) Since I can remember I was infatuated with suits, I was made to wear dress shirts for church as a small boy and would refuse to take them off, I then worked in my step dad's antique store at 13 years old and a man was pawning clothes and commented "I think this suit would fit you" (I was a thin 5'10" I am 6'5" now) I wore it for picture day ironically and everyone said it looked better than what I usually wear, so I kept wearing it. I dropped out of high school and when I was working at fast food jobs I would put a blazer over my uniform when I would come and go, because of that I was recruited into sales and then eventually tech. I now work a cushy corporate job at 32 and 50% of the reason is my suits. I used to dress in funky or out of fashion suits as a beginner and nobody would really bat an eye, I think they thought it was a little weird and I didn't get any attention from women, I've leveled up my game too hard now, It's a little intimidating (I've had a VP at american express tell me he get's nervous standing next to me because my fashion is on point) I owe it all to the internet and guys like Hugo Jacomet.
@themoderndandy7132 жыл бұрын
@@caesarortega5249 That's a great story! Clothes really do get you places in life. I always managed to keep myself away from judgement by intentionally going eccentric. Braces, clocked socks, classic fedoras, a pocket watch, all that. I think people are less likely to assume I'm just dressing up because I have to with garments like that, but at the end of the day, the norm is still only to dress up when forced to, so I still get quite a few "what's the occasion?"s. As a child, I wore T-shirts with the neck cut out and pajama trousers. It's hard for me to imagine a middle-ground between comfort and style. It's either a tailored suit and tie or pajamas. The fashionable in-betweens, at least for me, don't do either job very well. My greatest style inspiration was The Gentleman's Gazette, which for me served as a great reference for that sort of old-school dandy look. Hugo Jacomet is a great guru, but I sadly can't afford a bespoke wardrobe, or even a singular bespoke suit. It was lovely to hear about your story, and I wish you well in the future!

Can I just say, sir, what an impeccable form your shirt collar is. If a shirt is the flesh of a gentleman's style then his shirt collar is the soul of (his style).

hello hugo very nice video ,i have a dark navy suit if i want to dress the most formal way i have to wear a dark navy solid tie or a blue solid tie to play little with the colour,what about white pocket square? thank you
@SARTORIALTALKS2 жыл бұрын
Dear George, a dark navy tie will be super formal, where a lighter one will work but will create a different flair (slightly less formal, more playful). As for the pocket square, you can of course go for a white one (cotton and/or linen). Cheers, Hugo

#1 works if one has few business occasions but still very sensible. I'm looking for a suit for my daughter's wedding and I don't want to rent a tuxedo. What blue is darker than this video but not navy? And do you recommend a pocket square like Mad Men and my father's era in plain white?
@SARTORIALTALKS2 жыл бұрын
Good evening, you can of course go a a slightly darker shade of blue (there are so many). And for a wedding, of course you can go for a white PS (in cotton, much classier than silk). Best wishes for your daughter's wedding! Hugo

Hugo, with your first outfit, what is your opinion of a striped shirt and striped tie with a pinstripe suit? Too many stripes? (Loved the versatility in this video!)
@SARTORIALTALKS2 жыл бұрын
Dear Mike, it can work, but it depends if the stripes on the suit are very strong or more muted. If muted (that is invisible from far, visible from close), then it will be easier. Otherwise, you have to be careful with the different scales. The rule, according to Alan Flusser, is to have 3 different scales : Small tripes on the jacket, medium stripes on the shirt and big stripes on the tie (or the other way around). But it's a tricky game. Use your eyes and make sure none of the three is taking over the other two. Cheers, Hugo

This is good. Thank you. When it comes to the blue suit, what kind of tone will you recommend for the blue? Do you recommend the lighter tone or darker tone? Thank you.

I’m going to go purchase a blue suit and a sky blue shirt as well as a solid blue tie. My white shirt is French cuff. Does that present a problem ?

Why no pocket square for the last outfit?

Dear John, it's because I added a lapel pin and I prefer not to accumulate accessories. But you can, of course, add your PS to this last one. All my best, Hugo
