Here is a really fun story my dad used to tell me. One time he was at a business conference and he wore his classic navy suit. All day he was in and out of meetings, shaking hands with people in the industry, and so on. When the conference was over he only had a few minutes before the dinner started. Instead of heading straight there, he went to his room and changed his tie. At the dinner everybody kept asking him if he changed his suit! Moral of the story, a good navy suit can be completely transformed in an instant!

In hot weather, I'd say more than color, it's the fabric you choose that's most important. Some people speak about "four season" fabrics, but there's really no such thing. For warmer climates, there's nothing better than hopsack, fresco, cotton or linen.

Depends on the service branch, with navy definetly - it's in the name -, airforce and marine corps it depends on the occasion but it's definetly a no-go in the army as you should blend in a bit more. But maybe I'm mistaken, as stated here it's a very versatile suit which dresses down well, here and there a leaf, a bit mud and you are the hit in afghanistan.

Yes! I've long thought the navy suit was ideal for the first. Charcoal may be a little more formal, but navy goes with all colors of shoes and usually looks better with more dress shirts.

I agree with Matthew Andrews. Navy is the best color for a suit as it’s the most versatile. Dark navy, however, is less versatile than navy as it only looks good with off white and white solid shirts and black shoes.

I took a long break from suits and when I reentered I bought a charcoal suit. I did buy blue later on. I think Charcoal is more practical.

Blue may be more versatile, but charcoal is more flattering, imho. Depending on your complexion and hair color, blue can make a man look washed out. Also, charcoal is like a blank canvas to which you can add unlimited creativity with ties and shirts. Then again, you can wear brown shoes with blue suits, so that adds a lot of fun. Blue or charcoal...get both!

Even though I came from a working class family, I think I got my first suit at age 13 or so. Way back then most little boys had a suit for church, funerals and whatever. I guess most fellows these days get their first suit after their BA or associates for job interviews. I remember my little clip-on kiddie tie!

My first suit (and only at the moment) was black. Dad took me to Men's Wearhouse to get a suit for his dad's funeral. Definitely need to get a navy suit.

Nice advice but I think a flap pocket works better than a patch pocket for versatility. Patch pocket is usually too casual in business environments.

True on flap better for a work environment. My goal with this suit was to maximize its casual usage and ability to break into separates. Especially with the jacket alone, patch pockets work better, IMO.

As always i love the content, just great(the best menswear). How ever i dont share thoughts on my mind when it comes to this matter. I think a grey suit is a better option it can be dressed down but when dressed up it blow the navy suit out of the water, i feel a navy suit is not as refined and also can looks a bit faded, how ever im more of a minimalist and dont really like color .

Yes the navy suit is perfect 👍🏻 👍🏻 and it’s great for a job in the office, for law school, for a job as a lawyer, a teacher in school, a wedding etc and I was 12 years old when I got measured for my 1st suit and it was in the spring of 2007 before I turned into a 13 year old teenager in August 2007 because I was going to a special wedding at the time and I wore the same dark navy blue suit when I went to my school banquet such great memories

I would say, navy or charcoal grey are a tie for most versatile first suit. But, charcoal grey with some sort of subtle blue accent woven into the fabric (maybe a window pane) is actually the perfect first suit. Careful suggesting using a suit jacket as a blazer. A well dressed man should have at least one navy blazer in his wardrobe, followed by a black blazer and a brown or tan blazer). In this day and age of casual attire, one good suit and 3 good blazers or sport coats might be all most men need.

Unless you need it the suit for the job or job interviews you can always pick a black suit as the first. And you could argue that a black one is more versatile if you dont need it for work. If you dont want to look like a kid at communion, you can just John Wick it- wear the black suit with a black shirt and a black tie. Or have it more casual, drop the jacket and the tie, just black pants and black shirt with open upper buttons. I like navy suits, but they are kind of middle of the road. I would say I even prefer combining a blue jacket with grey or (off-) white pants. The blue suit, imho, while it looks more casual than a black or grey one, is really only for somewhat formal situations. I wouldnt wear it to a party or a gala.

Mr. Tom Ford is a great example on how a black suit is the best go-to option for every situation. Nevertheless, I do think that a navy suit is slightly more practical, simply because is a safe bet and the video perfectly explains why. But the single-breast, peak lapel, black suit mixed with a bold personally and charisma is a personal favorite above alse, as is Mr. Ford's. PS. We all need a black, a gray/charcoal, a blue suit and (of course) a dinner jacket/smoking in our wardrobe. And plenty white shirts! Thanks for the great video!

This is just so false. If you are a young guy buying your first suit you are not going to be wearing it to business stuff or when traveling. You will only need a suit for more formal events, weddings, funerals, fancy stuff, for which you need a black suit!
