Somewhere out there is a video of the Jan '93 Basic Training that took place at Saldanha. I was proud to have completed my training at Saldanha and then got posted to Naval Base Simonstown.

I passed out in 1965 at was then the elite, Naval Gymnasium, after my diving course in Simonstown. Two great memories at Saldanha. Off caps twice during basic training and the Master at Arms who'd caught me sciving off, piped for me on the Thursday before Easter. No leave, still on basic. Sitting outside his office, I heard him tell two trainees that they'd be flown home because their parents were critically ill. My turn came, with pounding heart, I marched in and he said," do you want the weekend off"? Confused, I stuttered, Yes Warrant " and he replied, " then get your useless arse on the transport! " Arriving home, I, still amazed, told my Dad, that the revered, Mickey Forbes had inexplicably sent me home, my Dad cracked up. Turns out that in WW11, he'd taught my Dad gunnery, with his favorite mantra, " I've taught the scum of England, I've taught the scum of Ireland, and now I'm teaching you." On returning to base, I told the Master at Arms, that my father sent his regards. His reply," Unlike you, your father was a fine sailor. " They met again at my passing out parade, a lifelong highlight. As we said good bye, he patted my shoulder the one with the diver patch and said," you've done well son" Now that is military leadership that men follow through Hell for.

Did you ever interact with the students at the military academy?

@@dogmeat4545 we'd go over there to play cricket. One day, there was a ripple of excitement and respect from the academy students as a young officer approached. It was a young army lieutenant, or captain, named Magnus Malan.
