I’m a former Royal Marine and was attached to SBS in Sigs Tp. I instructed signals to candidates on the jungle phase in Brunei. The team has a group assessment of all the candidates and if any member of the training team suggests that they wouldn’t be happy to serve alongside a certain individual it’s an instant fail. I had a good mate who was on selection at the time. He excelled on the hills and was doing well in the J. At the end of the course we have a piss-up, raffle etc.... and everyone is there for the raffle draw and a few drinks. It’s an unwritten rule that all the candidates will leave before a certain time. I was having a drink with members of the training team and support ranks, but I suddenly became aware that my good mate was still present. I thought he would finish his drink and head off, but instead of that he got himself another drink. I did my best to get the message across but he was having none of it and proceeded to get louder and more lairy. Time spent in the J and the obvious drain on his body meant that the drink had a massive impact on him. I was crying inside as I watched him slowly but surely fail the course. The training team glanced over at each other and it was blatantly obvious that he had blown it, and when he finally had to retire it was confirmed in no uncertain terms. I saw him at breakfast and we discussed his chances of getting through to the next phase. It was so sad, because he was convinced that he’d passed, just based on his performance in the J. I felt even worse for him, as the team all considered him to have done well. They didn’t actually say that he had passed, but it was clear to me that the night in question made their decision an easy one to make. Of course you have to be fit etc...... but it’s the small things that can trip you up. You might never be aware of the reason why you failed.

national service would fix almost all of the problems both in today’s society and for politically. If this were to work i think it should be a scheme allowing and encouraging young people to enter special roles either in the military, the nhs or with construction - I know it’s terrible to ever look at the nazi party for inspiration (so i’m swear of the irony🤦🏼‍♂️) but if you look at what they did to instil respect in their youth, they used a very similar public service scheme in the 1930’s called ‘the national labour service’ and was perhaps the only thing the Nazi party did right. A similar scheme offering employment to the youth for development, work within the NHS and the military would be fantastic - i don’t see why something doesn’t exist already given the amount of good such a scheme would offer

It's so awesome to hear two super tough/fit dudes going through the exact same stuff as me, figuring out what works and how to stay fit with bulging/herniated discs. I'm exactly the same way that if I sit around and nurse my back it gets worse and worse, but if I do stuff that you'd think would mess it up, it gets way better. It's interesting though - I screwed my back up lifting the back end of my 700lb snowmobile up from shin height, to get it unstuck. In rugby I see a lot of movements at the breakdown that are very similar, and wondered how those guys don't mess their backs up... turns out they do, sometimes at least (to be fair, they're a tad stronger than me lol)...

One thing I found a little disappointing about this is, there was a lot of taking the piss of others for doing things they wouldn't personally do, they don't know what that person is going through/training for, the bloke in the gym training in military gear could be attempting to get into the reserves (which for him could be a big deal) and all he knows to do is train his body in the conditions he believes he will encounter, they should encourage, not discourage, just my two pence worth PS I should add I have massive respect for anyone who has even attempted selection, so this is an observation and not a dig

Re. People putting effort in when at the gym - don’t forget these people have proper jobs.. which is likely where they’re pushing themselves to achieve. The gym for these people is a pleasure/enjoyment thing, not a place where they go to give themselves adversity. For you two, given your careers, physical fitness is a key component at what made you good at your job. It’s a very different perspective. If being able to do ++pull ups quickly followed by 50 press-ups etc. Benefitted my career then I’d be pushing it too.

I get your point however I think you have missed their point totally. People go the gym/go for a run and don’t push themselves to their limit, have you heard of the 40% rule? That when your brain is telling you you can’t do anymore you’re only 40% of the way to what your body can achieve. I’ve finally got into running this year and a 5k was daunting enough let alone 10k, I never believed I could do it and on the first 10k I did non stop my mind wanted me to stop after like 2k, then again after 5 but I kept pushing myself and the satisfaction I got from it is indescribable.

@@davidwells1508 You're asked a series of questions to get a base reading, it's usually name, date of birth, day of the week etc. The readings from the following questions are then measured against the base readings. Generally you can't lie on the base questions though, as they ask you something they know to be fact.
