I just discovered this awesome song through Cynthia Erivo's amazing performance. I knew of Shirley Bassey from the Bond themes and a couple other things and always loved her voice, but this is probably my favorite song I've heard from her now. A younger generation discovering her music and talent.

Thanks to KZbin, so many of the younger generation who are looking for great singers stumble on to Dame Shirley Bassey, and most are hooked. This is a generation that survived on raw talent, and there were no electronics like Auto-Tune involved. I saw a Aretha Franklin interview a few years back before her passing and the interviewer asked her what she thought of Auto-Tune. Her answer, "What is That?" These singers had to practice grueling vocal exercises consistently to keep their voices in great shape. Shirley did this religiously, and her voice held up like fine wine for 70+ years until she recently retired.

Shirley has fans around the world but is considered a living ICON in the United Kingdom. Other female singers of her generation including Petula Clark and Dusty Springfield had a more lucrative career in the USA, and this is more about them recording Rock N Roll or upbeat songs of the day. Shirley is a Classical POP artist, who loves jazz, cabaret, and songs from musicals. Her initial hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s were from either soft love ballads or musicals. She received her fame in the USA in 1964 after nearly a decade in the business when she recorded the first of three James Bond tunes, Goldfinger. People from around the world not only love this classic song, but they also discovered her unique 'High-Fidelity & powerful voice that to this day has not been replicated with any newer generation singer. Shirley has toured the world more than just about anyone and has starred in so many of her own TV Specials I can't count them anymore. What would have given her even more fame and name recognition was if she had transitioned into acting. This is what Barbra Streisand dand Petula Clark did, and it worked for them. Shirley had aspirations of an acting career in her early years, and I believe she would have made a fine actress because she is an extremely emotional person. However, it wasn't easy back at that time for a mixed-race person to get parts that would have actually benefited her career. The great Lena Horne who came before Shirley discovered that fact. So, after a while Shirley gave up that dream and concentrated on her singing career. To date, Shirley is still the largest selling female artist from the United Kingdom, and this was documented as she was inducted into the Guinness Book of World records in 2000. In this same year, she surpassed Elvis Presley's (whom she loved and adored) record for the number of weeks of having her records in the United Kingdom Top 40 charts. At the time it was over 300 weeks but is now much more as she has had several hits since 2000.

She was also Barbra Streisand's mother's favorite singer. Barbra, Shirley, and Barbra's mother were in Barb's dressing room to congratulate her on a successful concert. When she said Shirley was her favorite singer, Shirley thought to herself it was time to quietly bow out so to not cause a problem between mother and daughter. (lol) Shirley can basically sing the phone book and make it sound great. She has quite a few of her own hits, but over the past 70 years she has also made a lucrative career by charting with covers. Her version of George Harrison's SOMETHING was a huge hit for her at the same time it was on the charts for the Beatles. Shirley did not write any songs, so she depended upon the skills of other music writers. It worked, as in 2000 Shirley was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest selling female artist from the United Kingdom. You can't achieve this accomplishment by simply recording 3 James Bond Soundtracks.

She is beautiful and what a voice! I never heard of her until Yesterday when I was speaking to a friend about the adage that 'those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it' So, he sent me that song with her singing it with the Propellerheads of whom I have also never heard of either. I loved that the 'band' had such an age variety with several younger men and Shirley may have been the most mature. She reminded me of Tina Turner with her 'animal magnetism' however her gown was several feet longer than Tina's skirts, lol. Her voice is familiar because, of course, I have seen the James Bond movies with her unmistakable voice! What a treat to come across this. Thank you Shirley, Rest peacefully.
