i didn't know who Sasami was before now but anyone who gets Patti Harrison to direct a video of a Daniel Johnston cover is probably amazing. that is a merging of worlds i did not expect but very much appreciate

Seeing Patti Harrison at 0:10 and beyond instantly got me hooked. She’s the absolute best if you don’t know who she is - look up her standup. Edit: Actually her Instagram post yesterday was what brought me here and now I’m a SASAMI fan thanks to her.

I think it's a generational comment. Every generation gets some bullshit from the generation before them about how they're soft and need too much coddling. Patti's character says "He really needs the help." at the beginning, but Sasami just acts like a dickhead instead of like tutoring him or teaching him anything. So I have to assume the idea is that Sasami has been hired to "toughen him up," but what she really does is just some school-yard bully type stuff. As the video progresses, the school-yard bullying becomes more and more grotesque, morphing into a straight-up horror show. Then at the end, when Sasami and Patti are celebrating what they think is a job well done, we see them as the kid sees them: grotesque monsters masquerading as caring, responsible adults. As a result of his fear and trauma, he douses them with what I think is acid, basically completing an intuitive bullying-to-trauma-to-violence cycle. So I see it as a refutation of the idea that bullying is an ingrained aspect of human nature/society and that it actually benefits kids to go through some kind of emotional, psychological, or physical torment to prepare them for "the real world." In reality, all it does is ensure the next generation will maintain the status quo of the "real world" being a nightmare by leaving them with all this unresolved trauma they'll take out on others. So, yeah. It's fucking brilliant.

I take the meaning here to be along the lines of: everything in life we want to cling to will eventually pass, a person can try to shelter themselves and seek comfort in the passing conditions (the mother saying 'he doesn't like things like that', his schoolwork being thrown away, and in the end even his clinging to his own mother turns on him). This is an allegory of our experience as humans. In the end, everything we try to hold onto will be lost. We are asked to withdraw our attachments and learn to appreciate our power to let go of conditions. This message is throughout the album. She goes deep!

I was thinking this had a lot of “Unedited Footage of a Bear” vibes and sure enough Alan Resnick has a directing credit along with (the amazing) Patti Harrison. If you dig the surreal comedic horror vibes of this video definitely check out his other stuff, it’s excellent
