Sasha has adapted to so many eras in dance music through 30 years it's just criminal to call him a progressive house DJ. In the beginning he used to play a lot of R&S Records rave tracks and a lot of italo-house and vocal diva house and those 15 minutes lengthy of BT or Blue Amazon epic house, then it turned into more Progressive in the 96, but he played a lot of Acid or Trance or Breaks as well in those sets especially during the rising of Florida Breakbeat scene, he used to play a lot of breakbeat in his US sets especially. His sets in UK and US were different, he played more progressive in London but at the same time he could play more the likes of Tenaglia or Morales tracks in the US as those were more appreciated and more inner sound of US in particular. In the late 90s he started to use more Hooj Choons and all that Quivver/Oliver Lieb stuff. His essential mix 2000 is the epitomy of prog genre to me, that was kinda a synthetic sound but in not Anjunabeats awful synthetic way. He has a taste definitely, like he really rarely play cheesy music. Now to say that I would hear Sasha's promo 1990 and then his essential mix 10 years later I wouldn't think even a second that's the same DJ. Too bad Sasha's prime ended earlier than youtube started growing up. Even in XXI century he tried to use Carl Craig remixes that really shine and also incorporate new electro-house scene into his scene, that may be a controversial time in Sasha's career, but it's not particularly his fault, that era probably just couldn't fit Sasha's style of building sets, well at least he tried. Then it was his Ushuaia chillout house parties and Involver 3 and never say never compilations, he started to use more echo sounds, started to use less progressive sound into more classic 4/4 and even some techno. Sometimes they even play some Drumcodish techno b2b Digweed in something like Ultra festivals. Also his latest Luzoscura compilation was a thing for a moment he probably tired of house for some time

There's no one individual I admire more than Sasha in the house scene. I was growing up listening and admiring him as a DJ and producer while I was also DJ-ing. Every set from him was a Bible. Nothing came close to a live Sasha set. Standing behind him in a DJ booth or just being in the same room with him behind the scenes was amazing. Never had the courage to talk to him (I was in my 20's and not very fluent in English at that time). Long story short, I switched career and skipped a good few years following the House scene and I always thought both him and Digweed must have retired in the meantime. I couldn't have been more wrong. Not only did he not retire but he reinvented himself through his albums. He is truly passionate about what he does and always pushing the boundaries. You can tell that music really is his entire life. A true legend and I'm so thankful he never stopped. ❤ SASHA ❤

Agree that basically everything he does is a bible! I recently listened to a load of old GUs to see how they would still stand. What became apparent is that, while a lot of the early-noughties "tribal progressive" releases are basically unlistenable now (at least to me, much as I loved them at the time), Sasha's (and others') early offerings still sound amazing. Sasha's GU San Francisco and Ibiza, Digweed Sydney and Hong Kong, Seaman's Buenos Aries, pretty much all Nick Warren's early GUs - still stunning. Long live house!
@simonhunter834 Жыл бұрын
Pot Shuvit - "Conversations", from a Nick Warren Global Underground mix (Shanghai?) is a classic... And his group, Way Out West, occasionally release something amazing - check out Modd's remix of "Tuesday Maybe" or indeed the original itself. Sasha is a brilliant DJ and producer but there are also many other artists who, though not as long in the tooth, have the creative imagination and technical knowledge to also generate music of the highest order. Sasha himself, by his track selections, obviously endorses those who he likes and respects... the future sounds good!

To think he once said... my mother used to send me to piano lessons and I hated it but now? I can’t thank her enough... this man, single handedly is the inspiration for my quality of DJing .. I don’t know what it is but his mixes spoke to me back in the day, still do. In movies we lost a legend called robin williams ... one day when he departs he will be musics legend ... those who don’t understand are simply not worth explaining their misunderstanding.
@derricklw2 жыл бұрын
What about Sasha is or was super unique to what he does? In California in the late 90s, he was already a legend and the "rave" shops had posters of his CDs and mixes, but I didn't get it since I was into soulful dnd and disco house. Asking because musicians know how good he is, but I don't understand what he's doing yet...
@blizteredthumbs7911 Жыл бұрын
@@derricklw I discovered him in 1997. All I knew was all the classic dance like the charity stuff (which used to be acceptable) and the likes of age of love type trance. Due to surrounding pressures I got into house/hard house etc.. it's what everyone played but then I was handed a cassette of northern exposure.. my life was changed the second the mix started. The only thing that broke my heart in time way I was to learn the tapes and CDs back then were computer generated. But I didn't know at the time. The only benefit from this was that I knuckled down and learned how to mix just as clean. It was my goal and I got there. The magic to it is to never ever touch the platter, only mix with the pitch. I've never met another DJ in person that could do it. Once you figure it out your mixes become another level .
@blizteredthumbs7911 Жыл бұрын
@@derricklw and yes, thanks to digweed booking him we came to know him in UK/Ireland.. digweed was always a tad too dark for me but Sasha always spoke to me through his mixes. I believe, to date.. once I turned off a mix of his due to it being absolute shite. Just not a quality mix. But taking the amount of mixes I've heard, it's not even a grain of sand on a beach 🤪

There is something unique in the way he builds up on his beats. He gets better and better with time. I've been listening to him from early 2000s and he was always ahead of his time! As a 47 year old who has been into house/trance/breaks since at least 1990, I too share your perspective on the development of my own music appreciation. As my knowledge and experiences within life continue to increase, so does my ability to understand the different capabilities of music at a soul level. Sasha's own journey through life and it's ups and downs, and his ever-increasing abilities as a producers, combined with the continued development of the technology - makes for more emotional and intellectual dynamism within his sets and self-produced tracks. I look forward to his releases as they seem to always reveal something new within myself as well as being musically or production-wise, inventive. He's a pioneer whom I respect as much as I also respect Debussy, Monet, Kubrick and others from different walks of life who follow their own hearts and minds through life, creating a body of work unlike anything that's come before. Be true unto oneself...

@@simonhunter834 I´m 47 as well and your response totally reflects my thoughts and feelings. I’ve been going to see Sasha dj for nearly 30 years and was absolutely gutted when he cancelled the Manchester date. This is just magnificent, massive credit to him for pulling it off. I’m a bit unconvinced about some of the ‘live’ vocals over parts 1 and 2. Ultraista has such an attitude and there is clearly no love between her and Jules, but she smashes it out of the park here. Bravo.

This for me works much better than Above and Beyond's orchestral live sets. This performance unites the best elements of the two genres in a pleasingly harmonious way. There is only so long that one can listen to a beatless electronic composition. For example, how many times does anyone re-listen to the bonus CD accompanying Sasha's Involver 3 album? (For those who haven't heard it, it's the main album but without any percussion at all. Apart from the track "Moments Before Dreaming" it's really all quite dull...)
