I don’t think Larry Carlton is using his own guitar. It’s probably Tom Hemby’s guitar. Listen to this a few times and you will hear something different each time. It’s that good.

@@lukeguitar1 almost too perfect. The background rhythm part - I think it's a sound from a keyboard (possibly a sequenced part) sounds EXACTLY like the original recording. I think it's a tracked part - meaning, they are playing along to a pre-recorded track and it's the track that is controlling the tempo. That would explain why it sounds so perfect. I don't see anyone playing it, and I don't know if it's possible to play it "by hand" and have it be so perfectly tight. I mean, , I'm a keyboard player and I know theoretically it's possible to have played it perfectly, but it seems unlikely - and more to the point , I don't see anyone playing it. Plenty of bands play with tracked parts, so it's quite likely in my opinion that's what's going on here. In addition, I believe we are listening to a mix off of the mixing board, as opposed to a microphone just capturing a purely live ambiance. The recording tech does a great job. For comparison, listen to this purely live (probably from an iPhone) recording of the real band with Fagan and Gadd playing AJA. It's very good. It's not perfect. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqKvh4Srr9V0pc0 So anyway, getting back to this video, I'm not taking anything away from the overall presentation. The lead singer is strong. The background harmonies are beautifully nuanced. (Again, it's possible the live harmonies are aided by pre-recorded tracks. It's not unheard of by any stretch.) And in any case, Carlton's playing is sublime; and he's definitely playing live. :)

@@skykeys I think you know whereof you speak. It's kind of too good to be totally live. However, there's a huge gulf between your typical cell phone recording of a live concert, and this, which the link you provided illustrates only too well. There's no way to get any where near this kind of audio quality unless you have a pre-arranged setup to record the live performance properly. Otherwise you get just waaay too much room ambience, improper instrumental balance, standing waves, etc. This performance recording was obviously thought out ahead of time. And post production/mixing would also be an important factor.

My experience with this song makes me feel so good. My great grandmother converted a bunch of old 8mm videos onto a VHS tape in the 70s so it’s just a bunch of old short videos that cut from random things like my uncle painting out house to my aunts and uncles as kids swimming to my dads first birthday. I used to watch that tape all the time when I was a kid

This cover sounds nearly album quality. A lot of times live versions don't sound as tight as or as close to the album versions. This over right here does the original version justice. Great job.

When I heard the intro, I'd have sworn it was the studio cut. Then I told myself this could have been an alternate take. As another poster said, this is no cover band, it's the real deal. I'd have paid concert ticket money to be at this show. Excuse me, I have to go listen to the album now.
