@skykeys Жыл бұрын
@@lukeguitar1 almost too perfect. The background rhythm part - I think it's a sound from a keyboard (possibly a sequenced part) sounds EXACTLY like the original recording. I think it's a tracked part - meaning, they are playing along to a pre-recorded track and it's the track that is controlling the tempo. That would explain why it sounds so perfect. I don't see anyone playing it, and I don't know if it's possible to play it "by hand" and have it be so perfectly tight. I mean, , I'm a keyboard player and I know theoretically it's possible to have played it perfectly, but it seems unlikely - and more to the point , I don't see anyone playing it. Plenty of bands play with tracked parts, so it's quite likely in my opinion that's what's going on here. In addition, I believe we are listening to a mix off of the mixing board, as opposed to a microphone just capturing a purely live ambiance. The recording tech does a great job. For comparison, listen to this purely live (probably from an iPhone) recording of the real band with Fagan and Gadd playing AJA. It's very good. It's not perfect. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqKvh4Srr9V0pc0 So anyway, getting back to this video, I'm not taking anything away from the overall presentation. The lead singer is strong. The background harmonies are beautifully nuanced. (Again, it's possible the live harmonies are aided by pre-recorded tracks. It's not unheard of by any stretch.) And in any case, Carlton's playing is sublime; and he's definitely playing live. :)
@brucemacmillan9581 Жыл бұрын
@@skykeys I think you know whereof you speak. It's kind of too good to be totally live. However, there's a huge gulf between your typical cell phone recording of a live concert, and this, which the link you provided illustrates only too well. There's no way to get any where near this kind of audio quality unless you have a pre-arranged setup to record the live performance properly. Otherwise you get just waaay too much room ambience, improper instrumental balance, standing waves, etc. This performance recording was obviously thought out ahead of time. And post production/mixing would also be an important factor.

I love the part where he shreds a lead and then walks over to the girls and talks to them with a sweet subtle lead! Favorite part of this video!

Great band, great sound. And what a drummer! Fantastic!

Scott, you and your group are such a treasure for a budding Dan Fan like myself. The Nightfly is almost twice as good with your versions to switch to every once and a while!

I could have listened to that outro another 10 hours

Immaculate. Wow. The drumming is incredible, the bass is so tasteful, that dude on the guitar really seems to know this song.

I just watched/listened to the original New Frontier by Donald Fagen, and the KZbin algorithm auto-played this immediately after it. The intro sounded sooooo identical - I thought I had accidentally hit replay on the Donald Fagen video! Truth.

I grew up listening to Alone But Never Alone and on Solid Ground, and finally got to see Larry Carlton with Fourplay years ago and was astounded by how good he is at both lead AND pocket. This was a great tribute.
