I worked on a 1200 head dairy farm and milk production records showed that the cows preferred and produced more milk when certain people milked. We had an older couple that worked together and the cows would produce more milk when they worked. The farm manager actually studied why and the only answer was they were always calm and relaxed around the cows, they rarely would rush around. They had them milk different shifts to prove the theory. The cows produced the least when the farmer’s 2 sons milked together. I found it to be interesting that the cows would react in such a manner.

Hi Jan. 5c, yup that's a tad bit cold, I agree. We had a string of 7c's last week in Montreal. This week we will still be in the teens at night, with high twenties during the day. Not yet time to take the AC out of the window. A little rain out there is good for the soil. Hopefully the new seed will take root and grow well.

I'm 75 now but did many hours in a herringbone parlor. I loved to milk. Was fun...I too was pretty fast. Managed and milked 100/hour on a 1,000 cow dairy. 3X a day. Good to see a confident young woman in the parlor. Do you test/plate milk samples? Nice touch to flush the holding pen. They do get slippery when they look dry or safe. Nothing like a down cow in a full holding pen.

Great channel but for me I don't have the slightest idea what you use your crops for, what do you do with all the straw. Do you use it for bedding or mix it with your feed. Are the peas you raise for humans to eat or is it used for cattle feed. Enjoy you videos.

They use their straw for both feed and bedding. The peas are fed to their cattle. They grow canola as their cash crop.

I've been wondering about how you (and others dairy farms) feed for a long time. During the 1979's and 80's the dairy farms that I worked on, and others that I saw, fed in bunks. The channels with beef cattle that I watch feed in bunks. However, all of the dairy channels that I watch feed on an alley floor and the feed has to be pushed up multiple times a day. Why do you do it like this, seems like extra work to me.

They clean out the uneaten feed so that it doesn't spoil for the cows -- that is much easier to do on a flat alley as opposed to a bunk. Jan has some videos of them cleaning the bunk feeders in the outside pens -- takes a long time, much shovel work.
