I had the pleasure of meeting Nagano back in 2007 at the Chibi-Pa anime convention. I remember him saying that a strong core was crucial to being able to perform the best in these athletic challenges. He was extremely gracious too. His interpreter wasn't too keen on allowing me to get a picture with him, but he went, "ちょっと" and took one with me anyway. Class act.

It’s impossible for me to watch him kanzen in 17 without getting teary-eyed. When you think about the whole journey he took to get there, starting in 2000 as an unknown, enduring six years of near misses, including three final stage attempts that fell just short, and concluding with him finally standing atop Midoriyama’s tower, it’s one of the most beautiful moments I’ve ever seen in a TV show. You couldn’t script it any better. All my respect and admiration goes to you, Nagano-San. Forever a Grand Champion and the heart and soul of Sasuke.
Makoto Nagano was one of my heroes growing up. As a little kid watching old Ninja Warrior episodes on G4, this was the guy that inspired me to turn my basement into an obstacle course.
