This video tries to make it sound like the locking chips on some SATA connectors "evolved" with the revisions. If you bother to read through these revisions, you will see that there is still no such requirement for a SATA cable, and many cables lacking this feature are on the market today. My experience with SATA connectors on motherboards is that they require substantial pressure to seat, and substantial pull to release. The idea that they disconnect just looking at them is incorrect. I have also found that the locking clips on some cables can be very hard to release, and can even damage the mating connector. Remember that a motherboard is usually inside a commercial case (not just hanging on wires), and is not subject to the handling an external device would receive. Some types of electrical, as well as some other connector types (vacuum, pressure, liquid, etc) have a separate removable (sometimes optional) clamp to hold them on. Too bad it isn't available on SATA.

@sandiegoborn32 yes, it is possible. The PCI-E slot runs at reduced bandwidth though (I believe they officially ran at PCI-E x4 equivalent), even though they were connected electrically as a PCI-E x16 card.Some motherboard makers did this to ease the transition from AGP to PCI-E when consumers first started moving in 2004 and 2005.

Hello Linus, need help for the safety issue of using MOLEX 4PIN to SATA power connecter............I bought a computer with an outside PSU brick so if I want to get one more SSD into the system I need to use an adapter to utilize the on-board 4 PIN molex to supply power to the SSD. However, I heard that the molex 4pin to SATA cable catches fire frequently (please kindly google "SATA connector burn", all of them are this kind of adapter cables, which has only 4 wires instead of 5)..............can I get some professional opinion from you guys about this 4pin to sata adapter? Silverstone is still selling it, does is mean it's still reliable?

hello can anybody help me with my issue. when i turned on my pc yesterday everything seemsed fine i logged into my microsoft account on my pc and came to the desktop and saw a huge amount of flickering, blackspots and horizontal lines of black that kept flickering on and off on my monitor, i have had this problem before and have managed to fix it in many cases, but his time i cannot no matter how hard i try, i have taken out my ssd and inspected it, rearranged my sata cables completely and tried every single one that i had on hand, nothing really worked,and i had to keep trying for a while as i managed to get my system up and running fine for a while yesterday, is this an issue with my sata cables or with the ssd i have owned for only a month or so. i am using sata 3 cables because that is what my mobo supports, i have seen quite sharp bends in the sata cables and have corrected them a bit but i fear most of the damage has already been done. if somebody could help me with my issue i would be very grateful. thankyou.

There is no advantage. All SATA will fail you once you move your PC. The problem is in the design of the connector. It can't stand firmly in the socket even when locked, and it will eventually lose contact. Solution is simple - open up you PC and replug it, but watch that torsion force of the cable doesn't pull it too much from the connector axis. I wouldn't want to be on a space mission that is using SATA cables. IDE was approximately 100 times more reliable.
@blu4able36011 жыл бұрын
are you an idiot? IDE more reliable than SATA? yeah, maybe at 20mbps but at 40mbps the crosstalk is soooo bad the data is simply lost and sata is superior. SATA is superior in every fucking way, thats why IDE, PATA IS OBSOLETE.
@kornelijekovac979311 жыл бұрын
I've just transfered 40 GB data from one SATA disk to another. Starting at 70 MBps, but it soon fell down to 35 MBps. Those are the speeds I had with PATA drives.They easily managed 40 MBps or if you like it better 320 Mbps. Anyway, reliability is whole different factor. I don't care if SATA is 10x faster, when the cables don't work.
@Jthegamer081310 жыл бұрын

He's being ironic, but he doesn't understand that the airflow or the speed of the transfer are not important, when the pins don't make good contact and Windows is signaling you fatal errors.

Im confused af. Im about to get an SSD, and i want to connect it to my SATA 3 Port Gb/s. Do i specifically need a a Sata 3 cable that supports 6Gb/s? Or can i just take a normal cable?
@dannyk65506 жыл бұрын
A "SATA 3 Port" is 6Gb/s.....A "SATA 3Gb/s Port" is a SATA 2 Port. But the cables are cheap and backwards compatible (meaning a SATA 3 cable will work with a SATA 2 or SATA 1 device) so just snag a SATA 3 (6Gb/s) cable or two. And check where you'll hook it up to see if straight-angle or right-angle is best!

I have a major issue and I am in search of ideas to solve it. I have connected a red Sata Cable to the Sata 1 connector on the motherboard but found it to be to short for use. I tried to pull out the cable but the plastic clip is not working and is not allowing the two small locking tabs to free themselves from the holes to allow the freedom of the cable to be pulled out. I have tried poking at them with several different items and even tried to use needle nose pliers to attempt to squeeze the tab in far enough to disengage the locks. All have failed me. Any suggestions from anyone??? I follow Linus avidly on your tube so fire away at resolutions here.
