As farmers we are also against the import of rice, onion and potatoes. But first thing Akd did was talking to one of the mill owner for their support. atleast they should have given the stocks to the government for right prediction. Then right quantity to export and the right quantity to local consumption and the buffer could be analysed by the government and the price also could have been maintained in a manner where the farmers secure their profit and not at loss, intermediary secure their profits and the consumer gets the reasonable price. But these rice mudhalalais act as they own this industry. Demand and buy at a very low price from farmer, export more and create a higer demand locally and earn a big profit. And they hide the information from government as well. Except the Rice mudhalalis all others are at a loss. We didn't elect this government to bend their backs to these goons. Let the government decide if it need to import or else. if the mudhalalis dont want to do the business let them exit. If the tendering process has favouring someone then moniotor and fix that propoerly. But if rice importing is needed thr government should do so without hesitation.
Great Tharindu. Can’t we make a Emergency status against Rice situation and take over All stokes under gov control. We should do it before Importing Rice . We don’t need import as it hurts our farmers. We need our rice stocks buy by government mills . Please raise this issue further. We need to protect our nation and farmers.
If the mills are hiding for how long could they keep stocks without expiring? If there is sufficient stocks it will be a waste for them. Don't you think so? As a solution cant the government get all mills to declare their stocks weekly? Then there should be some one who sits and plans the countrie's requirement. Then decide any requirement to import... Just a suggestion
Is it possible that at this early stage of the parliament, to take immediate legal action against the rice mafia of Dudley and others can end up as a failure under the existing old legal and financial framework? Is it possible that even though importing such a large amount of rice into the country at the expense of poor economy can be bad and risky, it can be even riskier for this government to allow a serious shortage of rice for next few months for the struggling poor people? Raiding secret rice storage of the rice mafia may need a serious coordination of the existing resources of the police and legal framework. This is my two cents. I think Wasantha was forced to take that action to import rice to address the immediate issue of the rice shortage while his ministry is working on ways about how raid hidden rice reserves by the rice mafia. Had Wasantha made a catastrophic mistake by making decision to import rice for the needs of next few months rather than cracking on the rice mafia and their hidden rice storage, we will hear about it. My guess is Wasantha has taken a calculated risk by making a decision to import some rice immediately rather than raiding the rice mafia immediately because if he fails to produce those hidden rice resrves and siphon that rice into the kitchens of the ordinary struggling people, he will have a much more serious problem with the new governments failure to provide some relief to the poor struggling people. Overall, I would say that it is easier said than done when it comes to chasing all the business and political crooks of the previous government, which includes the key players of the rice mafia, like Dudly and his cronnies. Tactful apporach from legal and economic point of view may be necessary. All in all, cracking down on political and otherwise criminals of the previous government will be tough and protracted process until the current legal frame work and the culture of crooks is addressed appropriately. IF Wasantha has made a monumental mistake by importing the immediate needs of rice instead of chasing the rice mafia immeidately via legal and intelligence framework, you will be the first to know. NPP/JVP's promise to the ordinary people to not to make their lives anymore difficult than it has been under Gota and Naki Nariya. I think we will have to wait and find out in next couple of months of so.

Mr.AKD , during his election campaign , gave an oath , to the public , that he will not authorise the import of a single grain of rice to the Country & the people clapped in all happiness endorsing his statement . Now what is he doing.? This is complete breach of trust with the people . Given such a massive mandate by the people , it's a shame on the Government, if they do this. This is why I say , there could always be, inner deals , within different party members or even within the same party members in a Government . If this is done , it will be the beginning of the downfall of the NPP Government. 1:44⁷
