Bunny - Now I know that some things can't be helped, but I must tell you that I don't enjoy Mandarin food and I don't enjoy Mandarin child.
Charlotte - Um, I don't think that's any of your business.
Bunny - Oh, but it is my business.
The MacDougal name will be carried on by sons of your own, not the daughters of South Pacific.

Have you ever watched Gilmore GIrls? There's a grandmother character who shows up in a couple of episodes who has a similar way of talking about how great the Gilmore heritage is. And in one episode, we find out that she was actually a distant cousin of the man she married, meaning that she was also talking about her own heritage every time she boasted about the Gilmores. According to the show, it wasn't unusual for distant cousins to marry each other at the time that the grnadmother and grandfather would have gotten together, to "keep the bloodline pure." I always wondered if Bunny and Trey's father might have been a similar case of that kind of marriage.

@@theCatsitter878 True. Sadly. Some people (I say people, because I know some woman that can't stand up to their parents) and it puts a strain in their marriage. I have a friend who called off an engagement because her would-be husband's mother would insult her all the time and he would just excuse it by saying that was his mother's 'way' and everyone just accepted it. My friend gave back the ring and ran for the hills. She said the thought of decades of dealing with that woman made her head feel like it would explode. Funny enough, I also know the woman that did end up marrying the guy with the mother from hell and she managed to convince him to move over sixteen hours away, saying it was the only to save their marriage.

@@lilyoftheflorida1258 Nah, she never became Scottish, and she was an artsy girl on her own... no man needed. She was strong, and it was the most sane character of them all, maybe Miranda was equally sane... Samantha is great, but all the sex addiction is not good in real life. Her biggest defect for me was that she was very class-conscious, and she never really worked on that... at the end, Carrie was the most toxic of them all, and Charlotte had qualities that make more sense now that we are older...

It' very common thought to associate manners and elegance with weakness and lack of assertiveness, which are drawbacks if women want to have professional careers. Trey didn't seem to want a mandarin child though. He didn't seem to want children all that much when it turned out that they were having fertility problems. He wanted to have children with her when he thought it would be easy and she would just get pregnant without any problems, but once it turned out that they did have to struggle with it, he was just out anyway. He certainly wouldn't have done anything to have a child the way Charlotte would have. He only wanted a child on the condition that it would be easy, rather than having to make an effort to have one - which includes adoption. Honestly, Charlotte and Trey were just a mismatch from the start. I think she made a mistake also by putting them on a list to adopt a mandarin child without being sure that Trey was okay with it. And as expected, he got his obnoxious, busybody mother involved. But yes, Bunny was a terrible person and this shows that she was just flat-out racist. "I don't enjoy mandarin food and I don't enjoy a mandarin child" - really? She's equating a human life to Chinese food. I honestly don't think that Charlotte and Harry were a perfect match either, but at least they wanted the same things. Charlotte and Trey didn't. Trey was a good guy who never had bad intentions, but it looks like he might have just been irreversibly damaged by a lifetime with his horrible, toxic mother.

I feel for Bunny not wanting Mandarin child being Arab I relate to the Scottish highland cultures. Us Arabs especially with tribal origins find its a very big deal to marry someone with a different tribe or a tribe with a beef with your own tribe and sometimes marry someone who does not come from any tribe whatsoever could have the entire family disowning this member for making this match. It sounds horrible and racist honestly but if u live in a society where everyone will judge u and making marriages that will affect the rest of your family members, you need to step back and oblige and choose a perfect match for everyone’s best interest and that includes your own children’s best interest too. Charlotte didnt care for Trey’s clan nor she cared about their history and their traditions. And chose to adopt a Mandarin child without consulting him on what he desires either. I find the whole marriage was Charlotte’s mistake. If youre joining a family that cares so much about their identity, you have to walk with the same path because you’re now one of them. Whether u think its racist, horrible, backwards etc, this is the society you signed up for. Deal with it, not against it. Going against it will invite endless future troubles.

Scottish pride has nothing to do with racism.

If that pride prohibits the inclusion of others on the basis they don’t come from the same “stock”, than its discriminatory/ racist. I have a cousin who’s mother-in-law disowned her own son and grandchildren, because my cousin was only half Italian. Although that woman has full Italian heritage, She is an American. She was born and bred in Brooklyn.

@@kazior6521 I don't think it's racist to want a child to look like you. A person can have no negative feelings about a race,but when adopting a lot of people try to stay away from constant reminder that the child is not theirs. As sweet as it is to adopt a child of different race,it has some consequences on their psychological well being too. A child will know from small age that he was not born into the family and will be very confused,he would be definitely made fun of in school and etc. Not everything is about being pc. Everything is racist to everyone. People forget the actual meaning of the word

@@Melissa-hd3jr Is it classist if you don't want your children to marry a beggar? Is it ageist if you don't want your children to marry someone 30 years older than them? Things can be more complicated than they seem and it's not your place to judge. My partner is also of different race (and that comes with different culture). Though my family is supportive it can be harder, and there are things to think about. It's not just about skin colour, but also about blending two different cultures.

As much as I hate Bunny, i think Charlotte was selfish too. Adoption is big step, and if a couple doesn't have the same page they will neglect and resent the adopted child in the future. On the other hand, i wished Trey grew some backbone to express how he feels to his own wife, not bring his mother into their marriage
@camillemckenzie3235

She was. And she was a complete hypocrite. She discussed their problems with complete strangers and signed them up for adoption without discussing it with him, but she wants to be angry because Trey confided in his mother (albeit, who's a controlling pain in the ass). Mama's Boy or not, probably the very reason he confided in his mother is because he couldn't talk to Charlotte because she was so determined to pull out all the stops to become a parent.

@user-mx9ye3qo6b 13 күн бұрын
@mesmerizing9876 She rushed the entire relationship instead of letting things play out organically. She pouts and cries when she does get what she wants. She contradicts herself. For example, she hated the idea of a prenep because it screamed divoce. She loved it when it meant she could get a million dollars (gold digger shit). If you knew you weren't getting a divorce and hate prenep, then it shouldn't matter what's in it. She was sad when Trey said no to some expensive china. It seems like he was trying his best to make her happy. He wanted kids too until it turned her into a crazy person, mainly because of those hormone shots. Hell, I wouldn't want kids anymore either if your going to be crazy it's a turn-off. The only thing I would say was bad about Trey was that he was a momma boy who didn't stand up for himself. And charlotte thirst ass would of seen it early if she wasn't moving to fast and acting desperate. I mean, she couldn't even let the man ask her to marry him

No one except Trey is to be blamed here. Not being married till your late 30s and being so close to his mother he still didn’t know what her preferences are. I mean if he understood his mom even a little he would have known that Charlotte would not sit well with a person like bunny. Also Trey did never had a opinion or decision of his own. Decorating his house: bunny or Charlotte did that. Looking into fertility issues: Charlotte driven, Getting married to Charlotte: because she asked him first, Not wanting a mandarin baby: bunny becomes the one to decide etc He never took any decision and never understood his mother or his wife eventually ending up in creating a barrier between them. In this scene bunny not wanting an adopted kid is somehow right, i mean she treats her family as a direct descendant of a clan, something to be treated as a noble blood and wanting to have that blue blood passed from generation to generation is something that is important to her. But she could have been more compassionate towards the ailed couple and not forcing them into her will On the other hand Charlotte wanting to adopt was great but putting their names on adoption lists without checking with Trey at the least was a little debatable.

As another Asian “racial preferences” are racist at worst prejudiced at best. Racism has a power and superior component to it the elevates it above simple prejudice though. In this particular situation the assessment could be made Bunny is a racist hag. Racist because as euro centric white person in the 90s living in New York there was a not even subtle hierarchy elevating white people and their genetics to the top of the pyramid something that is still prevalent although much more subtle today. Also she’s a hag because she is kind of a witch, one of who though dresses elegantly is ignorant and obviously lacks knowledge of simple geography. I don’t know if the writers made that South Pacific line deliberate or if they actually thought Chinese people were considered pacific islanders.

Okay, so that makes you racist as well. Preferring a certain race so it doesn’t mess up “family blood” is in fact racist and disgusting. That’s literally how racism began and how it keeps going in society today.

FYI Charlotte is an alumna from an all-women college aka Smith College. Bunny do you HONESTLY think Charlotte would EVER tolerate how you view baby girls and the fact you think having baby boys are more important?? I am going to be enrolling at an all-women college myself aka Simmons University in Boston. I share Charlotte's sentiments exactly. Charlotte's behavior is more generous than mine. I would have kicked Bunny the SECOND she said she doesn't want granddaughters. I would break it off with TREY for snitching about this to his MOMMA. What kind of child Trey and Charlotte want to adopt---NO ONE NEEDS TO BE INVOLVED.
