The final broadcast of the Satellite News Channel, Oct. 27,1983. This is the final 70 minutes of SNC before the plug was pulled for good by a takeover from Ted Turner's CNN. The anchors and staff try to finish the broadcast professionally but the tension/party atmosphere makes for some strange viewing.

I got to think SNC failed because they were ahead of their time. I wonder how many lost their jobs and how many got absorbed into CNN. All, but the very young just out of college, wherever they did end up working, are probably retired by now, along with many deceased. :(

This ending is sad, because this channel only existed for *1 YEAR.* but this ending isn’t any sadder than southern television’s final sign off. They ended with their star logo spinning and fading off into the solar system forever and never returned.

SNC failed to compete with CNN due to a lack of cable systems.

Maybe if they came along 15 or 20 years later they would have survived, in one form or another. The channel capacity of cable systems back then was limited. Even if a cable system wanted to carry it, it would mean they would need to drop another channel to make room for it. With CNN and CNN Headline News already out there, there wasn't much room for another news channel.

It was a time when Cable News channels actually delivered the news. Today all of the channels are basically opinionated "talk radio".

Which is apparently what America wants these days (or at least a good hunk of it); to them, politics is (to paraphrase a familiar courtroom witness stand phrase) "the news, the whole news and nothing but the news"-- nothing else is worth hearing about (not sports, not entertainment, nor business or anything else).
