If you want more theory material, here's something: Subaru seems to have forgotten interactions in the Shadow Garden he's had with Satella. He never mentions or thinks about the interactions we see in there, even thought they're extremely weird. This is supported by the fact that he almost seems to change personalities in there, becoming obsessed with Satella in an even more intense fashion than his obsession with Emilia. This is odd, until we remember that there's something else we've seen that behaves exactly this way; Echidna's tea party. Due to the deal Subaru initially made while there, he was unable to remember his visit until he returned later. This, of course, would mean that he made a deal with Satella before entering the Shadow Garden for the first time, which would have happened the first time he died. The existence of this deal is supported by the existence of a condition that Subaru is not allowed to divulge the nature of Return by Death. Also, throw in the fact that Satella seems to know Subaru suspiciously well. So my theory posits a few things: 1. Before being summoned into the Re:Zero world, Subaru was taken into the Shadow Garden by Satella. 2. Subaru spent a significant amount of time there, during which both Satella and the Witch of Envy became infatuated with him. 3. Either due to desire or need, Subaru left for the Re:Zero world proper, during which time Satella gave him Return by Death; the deal would prevent him from remembering her while in the Re:Zero world, and prevent him from divulging the dangerous nature of the power, but would allow him to visit her and remember her each time he died. 4. Subaru's obession with Emilia is, at least in part, due to a subconscious association with Satella. 5. Al had a similar experience, but for some reason remembers his time with Satella where Subaru does not. This would imply that Al posesses another Authority of Envy like Subaru, which makes sense due to their similar mechanics, and that authorities seem to have a lot of commonalities between all their uses despite different applications (Gluttony can manipulate body and mind; the archbishops use it to steal memories and skills, while Daphne used it to create life, Greed involves connections between people, as seen with both Regulus' and Subaru's application of the ability, and Sloth involves creating hands, as seen in all three user's abilities. Wrath and Lust are less cohesive, but that's likely due to us understanding the nature of the abilities less)

It was just a spoken contract but both Echidna and the witch of envy claimed the memory of the encounter as compensation. In esoteric research it's suggested that demonic possession typically has the same condition. Which probably is the inspiration behind these factors This allows the entity to benefit from the ignorance and enjoy their contractee's agony. It seems that the contractee's negative emotions fuel the power, justifying the negative titles of "witch" or "demon" Divine Forces often require their votaries to do specific rites to get blessings that tend to revolve around selfless activity. Subaru using a witch factor for selfless reasons is the paradox that propels the story forward, as the alternative "if" stories explore when he doesn't.
@thermophile16952 жыл бұрын
@@L3onking But that's not it; the deal also included a clause not to talk about RBD, which implied it was less lackidaisical than his deal with Echidna. In addition, among the memories he lost were memories that made him obsessed with Satella, so *something* significant must be there.

I agree. About Return by Death's mechanics, I think the checkpoint could be decided after Subaru's death; and could take into consideration how and when he dies, so with all that data, it judges whether it's worth it to move the checkpoint foward or leave it the same to makes sure Subaru doesn't end up in a death loop. About Satella, well, imagine you pay Netflix for a friend from very far away; you can choose whether or not stop paying the subscription, but you cannot control how Netflix works, cannot interfere with how your friend uses that subscription, and cannot comprehend every single strand of data that works on that account; at most, you could know what he watched.

Another bit of evidence that Satella doesn't have any further control over RbD is that it's functionality hasn't changed, despite the pain it has brought Subaru. If she could control it, I doubt she would let the person she loves bash his head open on a brick wall instead of walking away from it.

I'm not sure if it's completely autonomous to the point of making decisions by itself, the most likely scenario is that it also takes Subaru's thoughts, instincts or the like into consideration, such as having the rule "return Subaru to the last time he felt truly safe" or "to the last time he could make a decision to get him out of harms way"; although considering the Sanctuary arc, it seems more focused on what Subaru knows/feels as opposed to being all knowing This would also explain why it seems to be malfunctioning with the other curses present in Subaru or, perhaps, it is gaining some level of sentience or urgency as a result of its evolution, becoming something more like the curses in Jujukai

RBD definitly seems to update the savepoint by a set of inherent conditions and used prediction methods similar to echidnas books. Emilia seems totally to be a part of it as well. Might be some wierd intnerpetation of envy like it allowing one to gain ones true hearts desire which in Subarus case would be to have a future with Emilia but it doesnt care if its a fucked up future tho. His hearts desire actually changing might explain the implied true deaths he dies in the if stories. In Pride if it might have over time shifted to be Emilia getting the Throne. In The Wrath if Emilia loosing her colour torwards the end of the story might inply her loosing any meaning to him, which surely would have shifted his true desire to actually beeing killed by Ram for the things he has done.

I like to think of it as if Satella and the witch of envy have access to the same abilities like Jeckel and Hyde with the same brain. Therefore Satella is trying her best to mitigate the curse inflicted on Subaru by her other half as this would have never happened if she didn't try to gain chaotic powers.

I think the envy factor becomes so envious that it hates to see the host to die while others live. So it transfers the host to previous timeline or checkpoint what we see currently for it to live like others. I personally think that this RBD is somehow related to IRL scientific theories as well. I mean, just grabbing people from other world, adding them to another timeline sounds like a physics professor would say as he makes a hypothetical theory..

He's not being transferred to other timelines in a multiverse type of way. We know this because (SPOILERS) In arc 6 there is a book of the dead for every death Subaru has had, meaning that all of his deaths took place in the same reality. Echidna also seems to think it is unlikely that that is what is happening when she discusses it with him in arc 4. She shows him the trial of the present but that is all fabricated - it makes him think that maybe in other realities people live on after his deaths and have to deal with the consequences, which makes him more reluctant to sacrifice himself, but that isn't what is actually happening.
@konoveldorada59902 жыл бұрын
@@NatalieXHunter I'll call it a timeline anyways. Does it really make a difference? Every time he dies, he dies for that moment. Then he comes back to his checkpoint and his future or reality is dependent on the actions he take from that point. Edit: I changed the "other timeline" To checkpoint.

As an anime only, I've always viewed Subaru's RBD only activating when he needs to learn something critical about the world he's now in. This can explain why some loops are shorter e.g learning the world's etiquette at the mansion and who is killing him/why (Curse or Rem) versus the longer loop at the sanctuary causing him to learn that he has to depend on others despite his ability, forming the pact with Roswaal and so on. I don't think that the Witch of Envy/Satella has direct control over RBD and that after passing the authority on, it is controlled by Od Lagna (Likely not the correct spelling, but the world's power that gives divine blessings). Otherwise I can't imagine if Satella wants to help Subaru, why she'd set his checkpoint to after Rem's being is eaten by the authority of Gluttony. My understanding has many flaws however, such as when Emilia dies and Puck freezes everything. We can think of the lesson Subaru learns here being the consequences if Emilia dies, but as the viewer we already understand that Subaru would suicide if Emilia were to die regardless. So in this loop, to not ask Puck pertinent questions before dying feels illogical given how much of his actions in arcs 2 and 3 are to gain as much information on the witch cult situation before dying and trying again.

@@NatalieXHunter I don't think the example above is enough to justify that, though. Puck goes wild (and directly kills Subaru in one case), could be that letting her die is so detrimental to the future that even if he could avoid Puck, he'd be screwed. Or just that it's unlikely he could be convinced to stop trying to go there easily. Other examples could be used to build the case, but I don't think the time/setup to beat the whale works to support the theory in particular. Probably the biggest sticking point is that the authority must have some regard/constraints based on his will, otherwise he would be compelled to F off and only do safe things/leave all important characters to their fates/kill the story. In that case, however, it's not easy to distinguish between "authority aims to meet Emilia's survival" directly vs "authority is aware that Subaru will keep trying to save her at great personal risk". A lot of starting situations/points will look identical between them.

All magic in Re:Zero operates according to very clear rules. It's not beyond possibility that if events in Re:zero happen according to a set path, which the presence of the various gospels seem to indicate, that all the reset points of RbD were set when the spell was first cast on Subaru, and so Satella has no need to control it - and yet, it would be correct to say that it is an extension of her control/plan. Also, it's clear that the authority has more conditions than merely having Subaru survive, as explored by the alternate timeline IF stories where, for example, he runs away and lives to old age with Rem etc. RnB doesn't just work towards Subaru living - it works towards him living and ending up following a particular chain of events. All paths to survival are not equal in the eyes of RbD. EDIT: There's a real possibility that the world of Re:Zero is essential looping - the Satella/Envy is Mad Emilia from the original timeline before the loop was created when she rewound time to prevent Subaru from dying - whereby "Satella" would know the specific outcome she's trying to prevent and therefore bestowed the authority to Subaru to prevent the outcome of the "first loop", and that each save-point is set according the places where Subaru's choices lead either to him dying prematurely or to the same end as that loop. She doesn't need to be all knowing. She just needs Subaru to 1.) Not die before he gets to that end 2.) Not die at the final point that drove her into becoming "Satella", hence breaking the loop. But I suppose this would work whether the authority came with check-points built in based on Emilia's knowledge of Subaru's choices from the first loop or whether the check points organically update based on whether or not ultimate doom at any given branch is prevented.
@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think there are more conditions that just Subaru's survival - I think it also aims to save Emilia, but that would have brought in a whole other theory I didn't want to go into in this video (that that is why Puck is contracted to destroy the world when Emilia dies - because that would normally kill Subaru and cause a reset. If it doesn't, as we see in the Rem IF and the Aganau IF, then the save point stays at before Emilia dies). Emilia knowing about this also seems to mark a failed loop. If Subaru tells Emilia, Emilia dies, and then Puck's contract kicks in, which would cause Subaru to die and reset. This makes Emilia different from other people. Normally Subaru is just prevented from talking about it, but that could just be Satella protecting him - if Roswaal, for instance, knew it was death that triggered him redo-ing things he'd kill him whenever things didn't go his way. But with Emilia, it's like if she knows, whatever the big plan is hits a critical failure and a reset becomes necessary.

As for RBD, blocking other people from knowing about it is definitely protecting him. there is one loop going against the theory that his authority decides the point and therefore only cares about subaru's survival. it's arc two, if there is nothing but Subaru's survival at stake it the save point would not be the first day at the mansion. it would probably be the moment he entered the village. the point he goes back to means there is more on the agenda then just Subaru's survival. i believe that Emilia's survival is also related to RBD. my reason for this is that there are only 2 what ifs where Emilia dies and in both of them it is heavily implied that Subaru does not activate RBD during any point. Subaru goes to the village a day earlier in the succesfull loop, this means once he identifies the cause of death of for his previous loops he still has time to save the children who would be the first victims of Meili. and the townsfolk being a superstitous folk would blame the silver haired half elf that looks the the infamous witch of Envy, and might try to lynch her in the coming days.

Although, it is worth mentioning that in arc 2 Rem is also an active threat to subaru. It is possible that reset point being where it is could partially be influenced by that.
@ShadowKoto2 жыл бұрын
Though I agree with your connection to Emilia, the only point I disagree with is that minor part at the end. She's not going to get killed in the village when under Roswaal (Only when she stays) and Puck's protection. Anyways, if you consider his survival to be necessary, then you have to also have to consider the fact that Rem would have been a ticking time bomb depending on the choices that he made when he goes into the village. If he had originally gone into the village during his first cycle, then Rem would have been cold toward him and wouldn't really help to take out the threat. It was only after he gained her trust that he worked with her and Ram in order to end Meili's attack. I'm going to go into LN and WN details here. If any readers don't want to get spoiled, please don't look. In Ayamatsu, his Authority seems to vanish after he achieves his goal of making Emilia the King, as he has no more reason to live. So, with a reminder that *everything that follows is pure speculation*, let's say that it goes something like this: As presented in this video, this is a version where Satella doesn't control Return By Death. When his Authority was presumably awakened nearing his original death, Subaru manifested the desire to save Emilia. He is able to choose one "target" and both him and the target will be guaranteed survival via the rewinding of time. Because an Authority is the right to interfere with the World (Od Laguna) itself, it forcibly sends Subaru back to a point in time which Return By Death requires in order to prevent the death of his target and himself. Likewise, since his Authority has an effect on the world in such a large way, his memories are all stored within Taygeta's Library and each one of his deaths create a Book of the Dead. Once Subaru completes his goal, his Authority will then deactivate, resulting in him finally being vulnerable to a permanent death. The only way around this is if he targets another person and creates death loops around him and the target until he accomplishes his goal for beginning it. Similarly to Subaru's case, we have Al. The possible reason why Al doesn't seem to have any visible books is that the death he experiences only exists within a "Territory". When he becomes the "Subjugator", he does not have any recollection of what happens after the activation of his ability, which may mean that his "Territory" is what decides what happens to his memories. Even then, Al has been shown to only loop a limited amount of time, and that might not even pass 15 seconds if what was in Arc 7's 53rd Chapter is really his ability. Anyways, I don't really have much else to say about the complicated theory, since it's a lot. To those who have done it, thanks for reading.

Honestly I think that satella doesnt even know what subarus authority is. I think she just gave him the authority sometime after she summoned him in the hope that he wont be helpless or because she thinks its a way to be conected in a special way to him. The arguments for this theory could be that there is no indicator of satella knowing of return by death outside of the grabby hands after subafus lips get loose. Satella never explicitly said that she knows about return by death. How does she know when to punish subaru then? One answer could be that she can sense his intentions and emotions and thus can conclude when he tries to tell about the secret even without knowing what he says. There are times where the punishment kicks in withour him explocitly mentioning return by death, for example in arc 3 when he sreamed at the whale.

far as return by death. idk if it is controlled by her or not, but I strongly disagree with the book of wisdom not being controlled by Echidna, because we know she wants Beatrice to chose that person herself, she doesn't want to tell her to choose. and I feel that's why Beatrice's book doesn't have writ in it. I feel Echidna chooses what it writes, maybe it updates on it's own to a point but she can control it if she wishes. IMHO
@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
You could be right there, but remember there's a bit more to that whole thing. The Echidna that tells Subaru that's why she gave Beatrice a gospel that doesn't update, isn't actually the same Echidna who gave Beatrice the gospel. Tea party Echidna and the Echidna who taught Roswaal and created Beatrice are supposed to be viewed as different people. So what Subaru is told about the reason Beatrice was left in the library with no instructions may not be accurate, or true.
@geraldcortez8262 жыл бұрын
@@NatalieXHunter well I don't agree with them being two different Echidna's, the author did say they SEEM to be two different Echidna 's. but he didn't answer it in a way to make it a sure thing. IMHO also I give no credit to a dumb ass like Subaru, being Echidna fooled him so easily, he thinks she doesn't have emotions . but we see she has them she hates the witch of envy and Emilia as well, we see her cry we see her angry as well, the witches point out that the whole contract was really bs. I think both Echidna of the past and in the trial are the same. until I read otherwise. I feel Echidna has shown us she feels and even cares, the evil act is just that an act. she set up a weird test for Subaru. if he took the contract he wasn't worthy of taking Beatrice hand, but if he had enough strength to refuse her after he sees she isn't right. he passed the test. and is what she really wanted anyway to save Beatrice. also she knows her own greed is dangerous and will make her destroy him so I feel she also played the bad guy to break away from him for his own good. because she was tempted to form a contract with him, and the greed if shows us what she would do if she gave in to that, or if Subaru asked for the contract. maybe I'm wrong, but the writer can't let us know where he is going with the story and has to throw us off. with vague answers. but I could be wrong, but I will wait. just like the coin with Flugel on it I believe is another way to trick us about him not looking like Subaru. but just what I believe anyone is welcome to believe what they want

Does the Gospel Roswaal has adapt or does it just state the outcomes in different loops?
@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
Well, I think it updates over time (we can reason that it does because we know Beatrice was waiting for hers to update and it never did, so the books updating must be a feature they have, rather than them having the whole future written in them from the beginning), and so for it to be able to give advice Roswaal can follow in every loop, it must adapt to the current conditions as it goes.

Why did my PS4 suddenly stop this video? Oh no You're experimenting with pop up KZbin ads like it's 2016 to suggest watching another video during the Vivi recommendation. Yeah don't do that. It started messing up people's chrome cast or fire sticks or whatever device. So most KZbinrs just don't do that check out my other video related to this over here. It's a small margin but enough that most KZbinrs don't use that feature any longer.

I've used those little cards on every video I've ever made and this is the first time someone has mentioned that... I mean I'm fine with not using them, but there's no need to be rude about it.
@charlesacker91742 жыл бұрын
@@NatalieXHunter alright somehow that comment was rude. Natalie I've been a supporter of you since I think the Attack on Titan chapter prediction days. I guess me telling you oh shit you're causing a software error on multiple platforms and most content creators stopped using that because it's a technical nightmare across platforms is rude. Just for shits and giggles I loaded this exact same video up on Nintendo Switch to see if there's a similar issue. And bam second I hit that moment Nintendo Switch crashed. If you think I'm being an asshole when I tell you holy shit that's why people don't use the feature any further. It's because it's problematic on devices that are not computers/phones. Nothing negative to say about you Natalie, I just was informing you hey this is awkward issue you need to know. Because it seems like every big KZbinr refuses to use that feature and I know understand why. So next time you're watching Gigguk or Nuxtaku notice how they do not use the self promotion video link in the videos. And you know Nux would 150% be shamelessly self promoting a previous video. So if I was rude I apologize. I only ask you consider why doesnt every KZbinr use this feature more often!? And realize oh there's likely a very good business reason for that.

I think it's effected by Emilia/Satella being the one who Subaru want to save
@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
I think so too, but I don't think it's reacting to Subaru wanting to save Emilia, I think it always was designed to save Emilia from the beginning (I didn't go into that in this video because it's another whole set of theories).

@@NatalieXHunter do you think there was a good reason (safety of the world etc) or a selfish reason for protecting Emilia. In my view if Emilia has a key that could cause the world to be destroyed, it might be better if she died.

We can imagine also that the checkpoint is influenced by the people that are dear to Subaru. Yes, Rem lost her memories and the checkpoint was after she lost them, but she did not die.

The time when Subaru returned by death but Rem wasn't there for him, it made me cry towards the season 1 ending. Either that, or everyone forgot who Rem was when I heard what was going on in the start of season 2. This is perhaps one of the tragic moments of Re: Zero that Subaru always tries to fight against fate and trying to achieve the perfect ending. If Satella can't control when Subaru returns by death then we all know there is another power at work. Haven't seen season 2 of Re: Zero so I don't know enough about Echidna but I do believe that Subaru loved Rem just as much as he loved Emilia.

I don't get it why is there discussion about this in a first place? It is well established that rbd is authority And secondly it's well established that user of authority is one who establishes its functionality In Subaru's case "i will save you" was trigger that made his authority and authority will always make it so that no matter what he will always have opinion to save that one person aka Emilia Was it not done deal already?
@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
What does that have to do with whether it is Satella or the authority itself that sets the savepoints, though?

first im sorry if this might be a little long -- spoiler just in case . . . . . . . . . . . . but this is a idea i been thinking of over the last few weeks after watching so many of these theory videos on rezero. Setella is a very unique person when it comes to writing ideas with enemies villians and so on. the story has shown us that the bodies of these people could just be the ones the current soul is possesing. so what if setella is really just a old soul that is very very powerful possessing people over time and moving on. it would make since because she can possses emilia. now what if subarus broken gate is connected to setellas shadow garden allowing her to acess anywhere he is located and when he is in a state when that gate is blocked say the tea party or in a bad loop she comes to find his soul to reset it. setella also could also be the one that was from the past or maybe its the witch of envy possesing pandora for that moment to try and convince emilia to open that gate in the elf village to access whatever is in said portal. and if that was the case maybe witch of envy or setella *whatever one is the free spirit connected to subaru* wants whatever is in said portal for some reason. now if the theory that minerva is in the portal would the witch of envy want minirvas powers for healing for some reason maybe to help break a seal or heal a broken mind like setellas to help cope with a bad witch factor like envy.. i have so many ideas behind this but its really hard to post them on a youtube video.... subarus gate also being broken might be healed by minervia in some way if at all possible but setella not being able to fix it would make since becuase she never really healed or fixed anything.. always just destroyed and reset for subaru.. maybe the mixing of curses and more witch factors has changed how it worked on a mental level for subaru and is changing his mind in some way theres alot that this can lead too if it is damaged also say time loops bad resets alternate timelines playing out at the same time.. anythign is possible

@NatalieXHunter2 жыл бұрын
I don't know where you got that from, tbh - I mean, I suppose it could be the answer if a lot of amnesia and weird stuff was involved, but there isn't anything that strongly suggests she's from Earth, and when we see Subaru's backstory in season 2 it doesn't show him ever having had a little girl as a best friend, and he's only ever been established as an only child.
